  • I might be spending up to week before my cruise in early dec. If anyone has any hints for that time, I'd appreciate hearing them. I hadn't considered a motor home.

  • Hi I've found a site in NZ that offers a range of choices for car & motorhome rentals.
If you were going for a shorter time you could think of a relocation one way which could save you alot.

    Hope this helps

  • A few years ago we rented a jucy van (Tarago style). That didn't have a toilet but I think they have models that do.

For Voteoften, on the south island this was cheaper than a car rental.

  • Thanks. We are sailing out of the north island. I think I will stick there and just enjoy the south island on our cruise.

  • Thanks for help will look up on net

  • We hired with Hertz a few years ago and I would highly recommend that you stay away from them. We asked for an automatic, even rang several times to confirm and when we got there they told us that they have never had automatics. I ended up having to do all the driving myself as my husband was unable to drive the manual due to an injury and Hertz could not have cared less.

  • Also looking for travel insurance. Is there one that negates the need to add insurace through car hire company?

    • The insurance offered through the rental company is a rip off. Most travel insurances will include it and a lot more for less then what the car company wants. Also check out fuel prices. When I was there a few years back unleaded was about the same as aus but diesel was heaps less. It might work out cheaper to drive a bigger van depending on your kms

  • Hi There… I went for 2 weeks around the north island and after much research I found Wilderness Campers.

    http://www.wilderness.co.nz/

They where a fantastic company to deal with and the campers came equipped with everything we need for cooking sleeping etc. Just needed food and drink. Don't just believe me read the reviews here: http://www.rankers.co.nz/experiences/1478-Wilderness_Motorho… You wont find these guys in any flight centre brochure.

As for Insurance. I used icover http://www.1cover.com.au/ which would cover the excess so I didn't have to purchase insurance from Wilderness as this adds up over such a long trip.

One other tip… check out http://www.nativeparks.co.nz/

You become a member and can stay on peoples farms, vineyard etc for free (after membership cost $75 NZD)

    • I am heading over in July and have already booked with wilderness campers and would love to hear more about your experiences with Native Parks!
