Gigabyte M32up & Galax GTX 1060 3GB - DisplayPort and Refresh Rate Issue

Does anyone know what graphics card I need to upgrade to to run 4K @165Hz (the highest this GPU supports)?

I don't game, only use my PC for productivity and work, and my eyes are too used to 144Hz+ refresh rate.

Only recently bought the Gigabyte M32UP monitor and realised that my GPU can't run 4K (3840x2160) @160Hz.

It could do 4K (3840x2160) @144Hz, but it forced the colour format to YCbCr, which made text look a bit weird and funny.

I've been looking at the Gigabyte Radeon RX 6500 XT Eagle, which supports DisplayPort 1.4a *1 HDMI 2.1 *1, but I am 100% sure if this will cover my needs?

I am really after the cheapest option available out there.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've tried both DisplayPort and HDMI, neither could do it.

  • Short answer is: check your HDMI cable, it will need to be rated for 48Gbps bandwitdth for 4k@144hz to work. Might be branded "8k" or "high speed".

DP won't work at 144hz, the 1000 series cards apparently don't support DSC (feature that is required for 4k@144hz to work via DP) - can thank Nvidia for that.

    • The HDMI cable that came with the monitor is an 'Ultra A Certified Cable'. It states that it supports all HDMI 2.1b features, including uncompressed 8K@60 and 4K@120, as well as up to 48Gbps bandwidth. Yet, it still had no luck achieving my need.

I am currently using the DP (has a little '8K' embossed) cable that came with the monitor, and whenever I exceed 60Hz, the colour format switches to YCbCr 420 instead of RGB.

I suppose the Gigabyte Radeon RX 6500 is the cheapest solution?

      Thanks.

  • What is your current card? Trying setting to 4k@120hz. You won't notice the difference between 120hz and 144hz.

    • GTX 1060 3GB.

It won't go above 4K @60hz and stay at the RGB profile.

  • +1

Maybe double check the settings in the monitor, does it switch to a gaming mode or something like that when you put it at the higher resolution/refresh rate? Usually the limitation (from my experience) is the monitor forcing specific modes, not the GPU.

Also make sure you turn HDR off in Windows first (and make sure the monitor is not in any kind of HDR mode).

Have a look in the Nvidia control panel as well, not just the windows settings. Sometimes it will let you override Windows settings.

Edit: Nevermind me, it will be a GPU problem. Your GPU doesn't support HDMI 2.1 and while it supports DP 1.4 it won't include data compression that allows for the full colour spectrum. In theory you should be able to support 120hz at 4K with RGB 444 on DisplayPort, but who knows what was actually implemented. Annoying part of DP1.4, some bits were supported but optional.

The 6500XT should fix it, if it doesn't it's a cable problem. But if your DP cable is listed at 8K and the HDMI cable is Ultra then those shouldn't be the issue (although "Ultra A" isn't a standard). Otherwise I remember reading about how Display Port 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adapters exist and can work in your situation, but I can't find the article again for it.

    • Thank you - Yeah, I read that the 6500XT has Display Port 1.4a (where the GTX 1060 is only Display Port 1.4), so I guess my best bet is to get the 6500XT.

      Thank you for confirming this.
