We want to transfer a car from child to parent.
What's the cheapest way to do this?

cheers. is MVD a new fee or something?
Conditions
Fees effective 1 July 2025
This calculation is for the transfer fee and motor vehicle duty when buying or selling a passenger car, motorcycle or trailer. Other factors specific to you may affect the actual fee payable.

Why bother? Avoid the state government fees and just get the parent to start paying the rego and take out their own insurance policy.
Yep this (so long as you can trust the other party to keep it rego’d and insured)
no problem with keeping it regod and insured. but doesnt a mismatching registered owner and policyholder have insuring//claiming issues
Would like to know this also
Our Honda (sold last weekend) was registered in my name /address and used exclusively by my two young adult kids who live elsewhere and were wholly responsible for registration and insurance costs.
Paying registration was no issues.
The initial setup of insurance in their name was a bit of a run-around but once setup there were no issues.
@brad1-8tsi: thanks for sharing . especially the addresses too. we live apart.
i wonder if different states have differing regulations about this .
@ATTS
is that every state ?
i was wondering about that ,but the new primary driver/owner is entitled to regos 50% discount ongoing with the pensioner card
Name on registration doesn't mean you're the owner, just the person responsible for paying the rego and point of contact for fines. The pensioner can just nominate that vehicle as the vehicle they would like the discount on. This is in Vic. Which state are you enquiring for?
.are you sure how the concession holder can nominate vehicle ? have you done it before. yep in vic
website apparently says concession card must have same name as the registration notice
@capslock janitor: Dang! That's how they get ya.
Pick your poison then. Pay stamp duty or pay half price rego/TAC.
You complete the transfer paperwork and you write down $1000 as the sold price - That’s what everyone does
I wrote $2
That’s the same as claiming exactly 5000km on your tax return
the paper asks for motor vehicle duty and marketvalue do you have experience with that?
https://edge.sitecorecloud.io/stategovernc45d-cftw-productio…
seems a Roadworthy cert also required be obtained..
Not sure on the other stuff but the market value in your case would be very close to the selling price ($1,000) so it doesn’t ring alarm bells.
thanks so you would set the sale price from 4 figures on for this regardless of marketvalue..
so, gifting at $0 value is worse..
i've never been on the selling end. only previously cashed out old unreg. cars to the wreckers.
now doesn't really make sense for whatever reason if someone wanted to sell for cheap, and then the buyer had to pay stampduty on a higher market value anyway…idk. it's not like vicroads knows the condition of a vehicle
They don't care, unless it's between 6 digit and 3 digit. But yeah stamp duty is the least of your problem in vic, rwc is the killer.
nice.. maybe it is different in practice. do you mean sales under 3 figures and above 6 figures make them care?
yeah unavoidable few hundred more for the roadworthiness huh..
In Queensland, I just added my son as another owner to rego ($36) so when he takes over just remove myself off ($36) and no going for roadworthy certification required. Hope this helps in Victoria.
sadly many other states have restricted number of registered operators/owners to one person/entity to prevent this.
Not sure that was the reason for the change, though possible that someone was aware of it. From my understanding they limited vehicle registration to a single person in NSW so that they can impound/seize the vehicle if necessary. I had read previously that it was a minefield previously if there were multiple registered owners.
the latter might be the case, but its funny because they ended creating an even worse loophole.
In NSW vehicles, can only be impounded (may have changed since but not when I was on my P's ~10yrs ago) if driven by the registered owner.
Myself and all my car mates registered our cars in our parents names until we we're mature enough to not lose our licence/accept the consequences of our actions.
If they checked their stats it'd be surprising how many 50-something women 'drove' JDM sports cars lol. Many of us, myself included, still have this set-up now, but only now its for the cheaper rego (cheaper insurance/pension rego) they get as they're barely driven.
and my Mum's never driven a manual in her life.
Thanks! Very helpful. I didnt know this and I am going to need to transfer to a family member shortly.
so,some things to do:
check engine light//p0051 dtc
servicing due .
roadworthiness inspection/issuing
how should we go about it in any particular order ?
could servicing be left later for afterwards ?
