Best Australian Transaction (Day to Day) Account for 2025

Question

What is the best Australian Transaction Account for 2025?

Transaction accounts are a basic day-to-day use account that everyone should have: It's an account you typically use to spend money with, such as paying for basic expenses and bills.

However, these accounts can attract fees in various different forms: such as

  • Monthly account keeping fees
  • ATM fees (for using an ATM that belongs to another bank). Many banks however, have now ditched local ATM fees.
  • Phone, or Internet banking fees
  • EFTPOS and Branch fees
  • Foreign transaction fees and Overseas or International ATM access fees

Some of these accounts also offer it's members benefits, such as:

  • Support for contactless Mobile payment platforms such as Apple or Google Pay
  • Being able to earn some interest
  • Joint accounts
  • Fee-free money transfers to other banks
  • Ability to earn rewards points such as FlyBuys, and cashbacks
  • Extra bonuses when you refer friends and family to join the same bank

Last year, most of you voted for the Macquarie Transaction Account
. Up Bank & HSBC Everyday Global Account were basically tied at 52 and 49 votes respectively.

ING will stop rebate ATM fee from 15 October 2025

    https://campaigns.ing.com.au/tandc?seg=orange-everyday

Changes to fees on Orange Everyday and Orange One

From 15 October 2025, the following fees will no longer be charged on Orange Everyday and Orange One:

    ING International Transaction fee; and
    ING International ATM Withdrawal fee.
This means that the monthly criteria to qualify for rebates of these fees is also being removed. While not all ATM operators (e.g., major banks) may charge a fee, where one is charged, we will no longer rebate these fees.

Changes to the Orange Everyday 1% utility bill cashback offer

From 15 October 2025, we are removing the monthly criteria to qualify for the 1% utility bill cashback offer. All other terms, conditions and limitations on this offer will continue to apply.

Access to international transaction fee and ATM fee rebates prior to 15 October

The existing Orange Everyday benefits and Orange One fee rebate offers will continue to apply up until 14 October 2025 for customers that met the eligibility criteria in the previous month, as well as home loan customers.

    • I like the removal of monthly criteria for the 1% utilities cashback. I left ING years ago and didn't know they even had this feature until now.

  • I use the Commonwealth Bank CDIA account as my daily transaction account, no fees at all.

It is meant to be linked to a ComSec trading account but you don’t have to do that.

  • Definitely HSBC for the 2% cashback. I have received $500 cashback since I opened the account in 2022 and I don't shop in person much. There is some chatter that HSBC is looking to sell their Australian retail banking business which could lead to the end of the 2% cashback but that has quietened down recently.

I only keep $1 in the HSBC account and transfer the amount needed for the shop from my Macquarie account (it comes through instantly)

    • Last week it was reported NAB are the front runner. https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/hsbc-s-reta…
If NAB are successful then cashback will likely be ending based on their history of enshitification with 86400 and Citibank.

      • NAB…Quite fitting to name their business after a word that describes the action of unlawfully helping oneself to someone else's possessions.

  • I see everyone recommending Macquarie but last I read online is that they don't support EFTPOS or Osko, has that changed by any chance? Osko I can live without, but I need EFTPOS so I don't get surcharges at places like Aldi. The loss of cash withdrawals isn't an issue since Macquarie rebates private ATM fees anyways.

    • No eftpos atm

I’m with Macquarie and they do support Osko/pay id

All my transfers out and in are instant.

      • Thanks for letting me know, that's good to hear. Eftpos is a bummer though
