      No it's not.

      • -1

CONDITIONS MAKING IT TARGETED DEAR JV….

        1. You must have a Wise Debit card
        2. You must be leaving the country by 15 September
        3. You must be leaving via Sydney airport Terminal 1.
        4. You must have gone through passport and security control
        5. You must be in the international departure lounge and get your coffee between 6.30am and 12.30pm

I think that clarifies the situation that its TARGETED!

    • i have Wise i use it to send money to family, didn't know there was a debit card option thing.

      • The Wise debit card is what you probably have.
Its what many people use for overseas transactions

    @ Sydney Airport

    Parking cost kills the deal…

    • +1

At least they have a train to the airport, despite the access charges…

      • -1

        train to the airport

So $18.30 for a free coffee?

        • And how much would parking be?

        • +1

And the cost for an international flight ticket.

        • There's a bus

        • +2

Tack on $1000 for the ticket to get past immigration. I know they don't really check for tickets at the auto gates now, but I wonder if anyone has gone in, and then try to get back out without boarding a flight to get to the lower arrival level.

          • +1

@Sleepycat3: If I had to guess, your passport details and flight details are linked programmatically.

Scanning your passport at the auto gates will check that you have a valid flight ticket.

    • +3

No it doesn't, because you can just walk there for free (no entry fee either)

      • and get a parking ticket?

    • 15mins parking is free.
      Motorcycles are free

BUT what about a petrol ?!

      • +3

BUT what about a petrol ?!

        True… 850km drive for me…

      1. Take a bus and don't tap on
      2. Take the train and jump the gates
      3. Walk from Wolli
      • -3

Are bus and train free ?

        • Read point 1 and 2.

          • @Secret ID: They're illegal.

            • @jv: Don't do it then.

              • @Secret ID: I won't.

Not worth going to jail just for a free coffee…

                • @jv: You don't get put in jail for not tapping on.

                  • -2

@Secret ID: Depends what happens afterwards…

                    • @jv: Just accept the fine and go grab your "free" coffee.

                      • @Secret ID: The fine is more than paying for a coffee.

    • I dont think you would be parking for a coffee if you were about to jump on an overseas flight

WISE is generally a fantastic platform that just worked for me, better than literally any other platform possibly could, IMO.
Highly recommended. Also + for free stuff lmao

    • +7

Ive moved tens of thousands of dollars through Wise, its honestly the best finance platform there is for international transactions. Nothing beats it, ever.

      • +4

        Hands down.
Bank to Bank made my life a complicated scary nightmare - somehow wise did it effortlessly - very thankful to them.
We've also started using them in our business to pay for overseas transactions with bank options - significantly cuts on cost of payment processing

      • +3

As long as you don't maintain a significant balance within Wise for any length of time, it's fine. Just use it for daily spending when travelling, and plan ahead with regards to fees if you need ATM withdrawals.

        • +2

Oh I use Macquarie or Chase to hold all of my balances - I usually keep around $5-$8k in the account at any time and i find it works just fine, i dont have any doubts that Wise will fail anytime soon

        • +1

          Can you elaborate on this?
          Whats a significant balance?
I’m currently holding over 100k AUD in mine. With an overseas investment property about to be purchased using these funds.

          • +2

@FrugalFranky: If you have an immediate or near future use for the funds you should be fine, it shouldnt be used as a long term savings platform

          • +3

@FrugalFranky: I wouldn't leave my money in a foreign owned company - they can collapse and you can be tough out of luck

use australian banks if you can - yield positive percentage and enjoy government protection on your balance

I never left a balance in my WISE - I'd imagine its the….WISE thing to do.

          • +2

@FrugalFranky: I believe they aren't a bank so you don't get the same protection.
Not only if they went bust, or had a cyber security breach and had to stop trading, but I believe chargebacks etc are hard or impossible as it works like PayPal as they are an e-money provider.
Personally used them in the early days when they were very buggy, lots of things failed, transactions didn't appear in my account (data just disappeared), and they overcharged. More recently know someone who was using them to move money for a house purchase and the money went missing because Wise stopped it for security checks and forgot to tell anyone and then didn't follow up on it. Eventually got sorted but based on everything I know I just wouldn't trust them with anything significant like they other guy said.

            • @Webber000: @Webber000: Wise support chargebacks.

I’ve been using Wise for years without issue, and transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars with them without issue. I’m an IT contractor employed via an agency in Spain so paid in euros. Each month i transfer my invoiced income from EUR to AUD, no issues, all very transparent.

I had one issue where my wise card details were stolen (after buying apple giftcards for Turkey). I was able to immediately block the card and all transactions were either stopped or credited back. No money lost.

      • I corroborate this result, too. I've moved considerable sums between South Korea and Switzerland with zero friction (24hr security hold at commbank notwithstanding).

It's clean, simple, doesn't push nonsense, and does one thing and does it well.

  • $10 for the card

    • +1

$6 for a physical card (for me). Digital card is free. But, yeah, would like a physical card without having to pay for it.

      • +1

I like the idea that the physical is a Visa Card and the digital is Mastercard, not that you should have issues with using either of them anywhere, but if you did you have options.

1 physical Visa, 1 virtual Visa (same details as card), 1 Mastercard (obviously different details)

        • +1

All my virtual cards have been Visa only. Wise now issues digital Mastercard?

        • My old wise card is Mastercard. They now use visa. Maybe some people still have old MC ones that haven't expired yet?

          • @Webber000: I only generated my first virtual card last week and it was Mastercard, then I ordered the physical card ($6) which came out as Visa which I have also added to my Google wallet.

Mastercard BIN was 535240 - unable to change PIN
Visa BIN was 459693 - can change PIN

    • +3

You can use a referral code for a free physical card.

    • You can add a referral code within 30 days of opening an account to get a free card

  • +1

    Melbourne as well please

  • That's the way, good stuff!

  • +4

Its past the passport and security checks btw. i.e you need to be boarding a flight. I also wasnt a wise customer, just showed them I downloaded the app and they gave the free coffee.

    • That does make me wonder if you actually need a flight booked to go through passport check. AFAIK they don't look at your boarding pass but I'm unsure if the e-gates check if you have a valid flight on the day.

      • In that case, we can just use passport to go past the gates, do some shopping, eat some food and watch some planes, before coming back…BUT there is a slight problem, ie. I don't know of a way to go from the departures zone to the arrivals zone.

In some countries you can, but not at Sydney Airport.

  • Saw this last month, it’s so far away at the Amex lounge end you have to walk over

  • +1

Based on the comment above, this free coffee is only for travellers as we need to be boarding a flight. Not for me …

Anyone can get 3x free donut + free coffee/hot chocolate/matcha latte etc. from Daniel's Donut through its app. Cheap/free sim cards from sim card deals + cashback are useful for this ;-)

Also free coffee from Soul Origin through its app. Another free coffee from Gloria Jeans through its app like in Myer Sydney City for example (depends on the stores, the store near Sydney Central station will reject this promo). Check their locations across Melbourne and Sydney for example.

  • Nothing beats Wise.. it's the best for international travellers

  • Wise, can't beat it in every way. Lowest fees and best international currency conversion rates. I use the digital credit card. You can delete the card and get new CCN for free. Awesomeo.

    • +1

Wise, can't beat it in every way.

      Apart from ATM withdrawals

    • bankwest!!

    • It's not a bank

  • Thanks OP, enjoying the coffee. Perfect timing with my international flight today.

    • You are welcome πŸ˜€

  • unobtainable!

    • huh? Can you please elaborate? It seems like some people have managed to get the free coffee

      • all of us are at work, 0.000000000000001% is at the airport ..

        • haha! I may have freaked out for a minute when I saw your original comment. Yeah, this deal is only worthwhile if you are already at the airport, and specifically the international terminal. I'm surprised that the post got this much interest, given these terms

          • @RubyChoco: curious to know how many people that voted were able to get it?

  • with the auto immigration gates there's no longer any checking of boarding passes.
but how to "re-enter"? can you find your way down to arrivals from the departure gates, via transfer gates perhaps?
