What's the chances that Bunnings will refund the difference? Or will I need to to the old switcharoo and purchase another at the cheaper price then return it for refund with my original receipt?

Sure, if it didn't require driving to and from bunnings, buying another set, returning, mucking around some more. Be better off doing overtime at work.
Dunno about Bunnings, but Big W now refunds at current sell price, not price paid; not stated anywhere in their T&C.
I bet if I buy on sale and then they increase the price, they will suddenly remember the price paid.
If it's defective, you bring it back, get a refund, and then buy it again ….
