All being said though - BB products were well above the average for measured SPF. Once of the lowest was an SPF50+ with a measured SPF of 4…

    • Great insights, thanks

It's also noteworthy that this particular variant of sunscreen was not actually tested…

    • Choice Link for someone interested in reading deets.

    • sadly the SPF rating only tells half the story, as it solely measures how much protection it offers against sunburn due to UVB. it doesn't tell how well UVA is blocked (the broad spectrum label has a minimum requirement). i would love to have seen CHOICE do UVA testing as well

given the small price difference, i would take my chances with this banana boat sunscreen over the colesworth stuff as it contains some more advanced UV filters, Ethylhexyl Triazone 1.3% and Bemotrizinol 1.0%.

    • Interesting - I've always had major issues with banana boat products and not working.

I recall a few times where i burned more then I'd have expected to considering the amount of sun exposure when using it. Obviously not an Apples to Apples comparison, but interesting nonetheless.

I read about it too previously.

I use Hamilton sport sunscreen at the moment. Previously I used Cancer Council brand and prefer it over Coles brand as it doesn't hurt my eyes (compared with Coles sunscreen brand).

I don't trust Banana Boat brand as it was caught lying (past news) about SPF50+ in the past long before Choice test and also other problems if you google about the brand globally.

  • coles are also selling banana boat moisturising 400mL sunscreen for $11 at the moment, but not the dry balance. i'm not sure what the difference is. dry balance might be a little less greasy?

There's a number of sunscreens from brands like Cancer Council, Banana Boat, and Bondi Sands that are marked down on clearance to about $4 at Coles. Seems to be nationwide and most stores I've been to have had a lot of stock but YMMV.
