The handful of times I've wandered past a Timezone it hasn't looked quite as fun as I remember. The selection of arcade games have mostly shrunken down into some knock-off version of anything that used to be there. On top of that, most of the floorspace is dedicated to carnival-style games that you would only expect the younger audience to participate in.

Anyone semi-frequent it who is older than 20?

Go pretty much exclusively for rhythm games and some of the racing games, and try to go every few weeks as an excuse to go to the city and get some shopping done. The arcade rhythm games are some of my favourites

      its a kiddy casino now

      • +3

In 2005, a game like Mario Kart at Timezone cost around $2. Today, that same game is about $3.50. While promotional offers like "Double Dollars" can provide added value, the overall cost has increased.

The shift from coin-operated machines to Powercards has streamlined transactions, but also reduced the tactile engagement and nostalgia (hence the kiddy casino/gamblling haven) that once defined the arcade experience.

While Timezone continues to be a thing, IMO (and link many other things) the essence of the original arcade culture has been overshadowed by commercialisation.

        • could have been 1 dollar if the spinning coin trick works too :)

        • +6

RBA inflation calculator says that $2 in 2005 is worth $3.34 in 2024. I'm actually surprised the price hasn't gone up more. Not saying it is or isn't worth it, just an observation.

        • Mario Kart is $2.40VIP/$2.50Standard

        • Unrelated but Mario Kart in Japan is already using IC Card. TZ's Mario Kart is sooooo bloody yesterday.

I do but only to grind tickets to win prizes. So I only play 2-3 specific games that have a high ticket ratio per dollar spent.

      • which games? I find Skee-ball not bad and some water shooting Zombie game which actually lasts a decent time.

        • +2

i find Lane Master (ten pin bowling game) pays out well when you get strikes and get the golden pin stages.
would love to hear other suggestions

@vandelay: Balldrop is a nice one if you can get the timing for hitting the bonus. It pays out 500 tickets for it and 2 plays cost around $2.

            • @iloveitcheap: At my local, it’s twice as good. The jackpot resets to 1000 tickets not 500 🤪

        • +4

Quick drop for me. I can jackpot it more than 66% of the time on average.

At double dollars, I average ~600 tickets per ACTUAL dollar spent.

That means a PS5 will cost me around $300.

Currently saving up for when they finally release NS2 as a prize.

          • @Pelicannn: What’s your strategy? 4 balls per container?
I usually just do nerf zombie. Anything under 130k is easily doable. Gotta wait for the swamp stage.
Space invaders as well but need two players. One to defend the bottom one to get all points

            • +1

@wau2: It depends on the individual machine settings. My local is easy, 4 balls per bucket will guarantee it. Others I have played are 5 balls in two, the remaining 40 can be split into ten.

Some machines also are difficult as the button might be faulty and double click or the machine balls don’t cycle fast enough so you run out of the 50 balls to drop (or there isn’t 50+ balls in there).

          • @Pelicannn: Nice job! One question - Why the crossy road every second game - To avoid being kicked out, like at the casino?

            • +1

@rawm: It’s actually not every second game, it’s a jackpot that’s paying out. That’s why it says $0.00 for x tickets. effectively I have two machines jackpotting at the same time and as such that’s how it loads the tickets onto the card when that is happening.

I’ll generally play Crossy road when the score for the 500 jackpot is low, I.e less than 100. I can then play it, and as soon as I get the minimum I’ll kill myself. That keeps the jackpot only slightly higher on the next run.

              • @Pelicannn: I don't understand any of this but i must learn!

                • @Juice08: Effectively, arcade machines are still made to print physical tickets, so when they retrofit a digital ticket machine that sends the tickets to your power card the tickets are added in the same fashion, I.e one at a time because it’s just a light sensor ticking over once per ticket. So both games are sending the tickets and they do that in bunches of 20.

Needless to say, it is very frustrating when you have 10,000+ tickets backed up on the machine to payout and you gotta stand there for 30 minutes waiting for them to load onto the card. I know they say it’s not possible (from staff) but I feel like I have definitely had tickets go missing from walking away before the tickets were fully paid. Perhaps someone else swiped after and collected some of the tickets through a glitch, I’m not sure.

I just updated the previous link of a video showing the machine backed up by 11,000 tickets… it pays tickets at a rate of ~200 per minute. You can do the math haha.

              • @Pelicannn: That's incorrect, Crossy Road only jumps up a certain amount, I've done Crossy Roads multiple times and the max it jumps up to 20 tickets per shot. Only play it twice as it can get draining.

                • @luckydan: What do you mean the max it jumps up is 20 tickets per shot?

The Crossy road at my local is directly correlated to previous games. If the score to beat is 130, and I score 131 the new score to beat will be a little bit higher. If I score 200-300 and score to beat is only 130, the new score to beat will be in the 200-300 range.

                  • @Pelicannn: There are multiple version of crossy roads arcades. The disney one at least, the hurdle goes up by 20 points for every jackpot won. The old (OG) one is a bit different but I don't see that version in recent times.

In Gold Coast TZ, they have both versions and they are both rigged to the kingdom come!

  • Anyone know if Timezone credit can be used for bowling?

    • +1

The ones with the shorter lanes can be used with Timezone credit. It works like that in the Parramatta NSW outlet.

      • +1

Can also confirm it does work with Skee-Ball.

    • +1

not for proper bowling, was disappointed to find this out recently

  • It would be good if you could activate this offer online instead of only instore

    • +2

You can use this offer on they're app

      • not if you dont have a power card added to it. I dont think we ever kept a card so can't reload

  • The newly refreshed TimeZone Knox City is an example of where the money is. 75-80% are either carnival, ticket games, or claw game. 10% are rhytm games (DDR Gold, Mai2x, Chunithm, Taiko no Tatsujin), 5% are VR or experience like game (ColourGrid, VRs, Horseracing), and 5% arcades (shooting range, Midnight Tune, and Asphalt Legends)

At the very least, they managed to convert the dead space/area of Knox City into a very lively one particularly after they have Zone Bowling literally across TimeZone. At least, that's my observation over the last month.

    • There's also laser tag in the new Timezone?

  • How do you become a gold or platinum member?

  • Anyone use the App or do you keep a physical card? Reviews seems so bad for the app and just want to see if I can collate my other cards to it or do I need to start fresh?

    • +1

My Samsung phone doesn't work on the readers so have to use physical card.
