  • Is it better than down jacket?

    • At that price, better buy Two, and put it together.

Better in that it doesn't lose as much warmth or damage as easily when exposed to moistute (rain, sweat, etc), no animals involved, and Patagonia support their products with repairs extremely well, but like for like I would say it's not as warm as down.

Not as warm as their down sweater but certainly warm enough for an Australian winter and more.

      • Not warm enough for Melbourne winters.

These are pretty light weight and thin

Great price but I recommend trying it on before buying - sizing is a bit off!

    • how do they size ?

      • -1

        "a bit off!"

      • They run small. But going up a size might make it too big, so I recommend trying it on first in any case.

Not enough insulation in this version IMO.

Down jacket all the way. Even a cheapy from Anaconda will be warmer than this.

Patagonia have worked this out as they have just introduced an updated version with significantly more synthetic insulation. Priced accordingly though 😬

  • Zipper pull on the hybrid was on the wrong side (stays to the right when unzipped), would be the same here likely, so a bit of wrong handedness going on.

    • Didnt clothing manufacturers make zipper pull differently for men and women?

      • Yes, but also americans do things backwards apparently.

You can see it in this video 42s.

E: Apparently The North Face do this too. Possibly that with heavy outer layers, or if you wear Patagonia, you can expect someone else to help you get dressed…

  • Rab Xenair Alpine Jacket is really good, very warm, and light. It is synthetic insulation. Can find on sale at times.

I have one of these, love it. I run a bit warmer than most and think it's perfect for Aussie winters, do keep in mind it's not as warm as down though. It packs up small when you need it to, lightweight, useful pockets, it's versatile with the hoody for extra warmth and the zipper for when you're moving around and need to cool off a bit. I mostly use it for camping/hiking. It works well as an outer layer with something like a long sleeve merino base layer which I've been comfortable with in -4c temps.

Agree that sizing is a little odd - I had to size up to a large when I'd normally be a medium, so the sleeves are a little long (which the elastic cuffs help with), but there's a perfect amount of space for layers without being so airy that warmth isn't kept in without layers.
