Not the best deal in history but I needed a travel insurance for next week and out of the handful of usual OzB suspects, TID was the only one with a working code.
As usual, read the PDS, check Smartraveller, etc.

  • Try blue insurance maybe? I thought their prices were a bit cheaper…

Try auspost travel insurance. Always the cheapest for similar core coverage.

  • Pay with credit card that offers free travel insurance

Took out cover with TID once, never again.

They tried every excuse in the book to avoid paying out. Where as with other insurers they would pay out without a fight.

    • Which ones would you suggest?

      • We went with Bupa, missed a flight home from holiday recently due to compounding factors with getting a taxi ride to airport on time, and I was amazed that they paid out on our replacement tickets with no hassle. Not sure on the value for money but definitely a repeat customer from me.

There's no point in buying if the insurer won't pay out when you need them

    Hi all,

I've vowed to neg every TID post/deal that comes through, this is so people are aware of my bad experience:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/872889

    Summary on experience:

I had a bad experience claiming with Travel Insurance Direct.

There was an earthquake in Japan and I couldn't travel from Tokyo to Osaka due to damage on the train system.

This resulted in me also not being able to arrive to my Osaka hotel.

TID advised me the train company and hotel should compensate me if it was impacted by the earthquake, not them.

TID also requested I get written evidence from the train and hotel companies advising they won't cover me even before they look into my claim.

What's the point of having travel insurance when they're not covering these scenarios.

My work colleague used their credit card travel insurance with the same scenario and no problems claiming.

I advise you to contact other travel insurances with a few scenarios and how they go about compensation eg., like my scenario.

It may be worth the extra money looking elsewhere.

    An alternative:

I've done a ton of research on other travel insurance companies post that experience, Tick Travel Insurance was what I ended up with based on price and what they cover:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/tickinsurance.com.au

They run 15% off promos once in a while.

It's just a suggestion based on my personal experience

Look into Battleface, their products seem more generous than Tick and a bit cheaper.
