Just a word of caution to fellow Google ecosystem users: Gemini doesn't support secure actions, such as those that require a PIN (e.g. opening a garage, unlocking a front door). So you need to stick with Google Assistant on your devices for as long as you can (until Google completely deprecates it).

I opened a bug report regarding this issue, but no response yet. It's worth upvoting the issue to signal to Google that it's important they fix it.

got one off this for my garage door and very happy with it,, we just use app

    • Yeah but the widget (on Android) is a bit annoying. You would hope it works on the first touch but never. Otherwise it's good

      • Good chance that's because your phone puts the application to sleep so it's actually not available when you press the widget.

  • +1

I got one without homekit (I don't have Apple devices $10 cheaper as well)

  • newbie question,

can i still use a conventional key fob remote to open and close the door as well whist this is installed

    • +5

Yes. It does not replace the key fob, it adds function.

      • -1

can i open the door with the app but close with the key fob

        • +2

Yes. They work independently. Just like another remote

        • +1

Mine I am able to. I've got a wall remote, a key fob, the app and google home. I can use all of them interchangeably.

          • @sh4hp: Does this attachment know the doors state? For older garage motors?

Ie. Knowing its in a closed or opened state? When you open with a proper remote, does the app/ this attachment also know that it was opened via other means?

            • @slam: Yes. Comes with a magnet sensor that you install. I installed mine at the top of the door. You can actually set-up an alarm say after 10pm and it will notify you if the door is opened. It knows its open, doesn't specify by what means

              • @turk182: Great thanks, might give one a go.

            • @slam: Within my Apple ecosystem I can check the door's open/closed status from afar (for us paranoid drivers), and it'll also warn you if you leave the door open for longer than 15 mins (while mowing…)

It's so Star Trekky to demand "Hey Siri, open the garage door" when approaching from a couple of blocks away -)

              • @chrism238: I can’t get it to work on HomeKit and home assistant
So it’s less star trekky for me but more like battlefield earth (look that up 🤭)

                • +1

@HunterBargainHunter: It works well for me with both HomeKit and Home Assistant (using Meross LAN integration).

I have added some HA integrations to switch the light on when the gate is opened in the evening.

            • @slam: it dose on my app if door is open or closed

    • Yes

  • -1

    How to install it?

    • -1

There’s a user guide on the listing page that will tell you.

      • I mean need electrician or diy or can be installed to any garage opener

        • DIY afaik

        • DIY def don't need electrician, just unplug the garage door opener beforehand.

    • you do not need electrician for that,, there are few videos on YouTube ..its very simple process

  • -1

Is this hard to install? Hoping to get one but don't want to shell out $100+ for getting someone else to install it.

    • +1

Depends on location of door opener and ease of access.

It took me 30 minutes to get mine installed, and 15 minutes of that was to look for a two plug extension to plug both this and the opener in.

    • +1

You just need step ladder, screwdriver and maybe 30 mins if you're quick.
Got this 3 days ago and installed under 30 mins (first timer) but make sure you're garage supports this.

    • very easy to install, 2 wires into the back of the door opening unit on the ceiling and then the physical sensor you just trace along the top of the rail that goes to your garage door and simply sticky tape (gorilla tape) or screw into the wall. The other side of the sensor goes on your garage door, i just gorilla taped it on (it has a pretty solid magnet on it).

  • I haven't explored yet, but can I register the same device in both google home and apple homekit?

  • +2

There are similar Tuya wifi devices on aliexpress for much cheaper, I have been using one for about a year with no issues. I've also integrated it with google home so I can ask it to open the door when I'm close to the garage but not close enough for a regular remote to work (this needs pin btw). This is just FYI for people more familiar and /or comfortable with Tuya.

    • Link?

      • +1

I am not able to link it here, but search for "Wofea WiFi Switch Smart Garage Door Opener", buy the one that is sold by "wofea official store" - it's around 15$ rn.

    • HI thanks for the info.

I have TUYA security camera and familliar with the interfase.

I just got into new home and want to smatifi the garage door. Do you have exact model of this TUYA garage door product? I want to hook up with using existing 12V system. thanks in advance.

      • I am not able to link it here, but search for "Wofea WiFi Switch Smart Garage Door Opener", buy the one that is sold by "wofea official store" - it's around 15$ rn.

    • I also have an Aliexpress unit and is linked in the Smartlife app.

I have figured a way to open the garage doors without a pin in Google Home and that is to set up an Automation. In the automation, you need to run a Scene. And the Scenes are set up in the Smartlife app.

I have a Scene to open each garage door - so 1 door = 1 scene.

I also have a scene which opens 2 garage doors.

Finally I have a scene which closes all garage doors.

Then in Google Home, set up an Automation to correspond with each scene.

Eg, when I say "I'm home" automation, it runs the open 2 garage door scenes.

When I say "I'm leaving", it runs the close all garage door scene. And it will close any doors that are open.

I was also able to add the Smartlife scenes to Android Auto. So I now have 3 ways to open and close the garage doors (not including the physical fob).

I use mine with Samsung smart things, set a proximity to home if my phone is connected to my motorcycle or car Bluetooth and the door opens automatically. Works well.

    • Will give that a try. I tried using my google home proximity, but extremely hit and miss. Had a few too many accidents where I waited for a few minutes, nothing happened thus used the fob but it kicks in mid reversing and my garage door closes over my car.

  • To stay in compliance, if you're adding automation, you also need a safety sensor on automated garage doors. This device comes with the "open/closed" sensor but not a safety sensor. I bought one from China for about $15 but garage door safety sensors seem to be closer to $100 if sourced domestically.

    • Yes, and if you try using sensors bought from ebay/ali, they may or may not work DIRECTLY with the garage door opener. However, you can use those sensors to get audio or visual feedback wether beam (to determine wether its safe to close the door or not) is broken or not.

    • Any chance you have that link handy?

We’ve had the HomeKit version for a few years and it’s been solid, but recently the roller door has opened a couple of times on its own. The app log shows it was triggered by me even though I definitely didn’t do anything. Thankfully we spotted it straight away from the notifications, but it’s pretty strange behaviour, I need to try and work out what’s going on.

  • I installed this product four months ago and have stopped using it. Here's my Amazon review on it:

Alexa integration doesn't work and the Google integration is so clunky that it's faster for me to use my original manual remote. Making this product a waste of time and money. Customer support has been impossible to find on the Meross app. I've submitted a question in a forum there about a month ago but no reply.

Using Google the device does function but to open the door you must enter a pin code - which is much slower than just pushing the button on my original remote. I've tried disabling the pin code requirement but it says it's a requirement and won't work with it disabled.

When closing the door this works okay but I have to wait for my phone to fully connect to my car Bluetooth otherwise I need to unlock my phone for it to work. I seem to often by leaving in a rush so need to unlock my phone manually to make it work. Again, faster to use the original manual remote.

If Meross could get back to me and help with at least the door opening/pin code issue with Google then I'd be happy enough with the product. My garage door is slow so would love to be able to start opening my door from down the street on the way home, without touching my phone (illegal). Currently regretting installing this device.

My phone is a Samsung S22+.

My tiny hack is asking google to close the garage (although it is already closed). Works flawlessly to open the garage every time and no pins required.

      • This might not work with the smart opener that sense wether the door is open or not, i.e., if the door is already closed, google voice command to close the door won't close the door. I can confirm this is the case with aliexpress version I mentioned above.

        • Interesting. I've never had this happen to me. I've got the Meross.

Will check once I am back home why mine works differently to yours.

How was yours integrated into the system?

          • @sh4hp: Does Meross have a sensor that reports open or close state?

I've just connected the device to Tuya app, and integrated with google home. google home sends voice command open/close signals to the tuya opener, and it only opens if garage is closed (and vice versa). For open action, pin is required - which I can talk aloud for google to send to Tuya

  • +2

This is one of the best purchases to make your life easier. I have set it up on my iPhone and assigned the action button to open/close the garage door. Easy access to the clicker and I can always see if my garage door is open or closed.

  • +3

Mine worked for a few years before it started malfunctioning. Fortunately, I have HomeAssistant setup to announce through my smart speakers whenever the garage door opens or closes, turn on garage/driveway lights, capture photos from cameras inside/outside garage and send phone notification with photos. I was alerted by the notification when the door opened on its own in the middle of the night. I noticed this trends to happen when garage is cold/hot as it faces southwest. To prevent this, I plan to connect the garage door opener's AC adapter to a smart plug to turn it off at night while still receiving notifications.

Hopefully its not a hack in my system.

    • I have had this happen a few times where it just Opens on its own.

The last time it happened at 11:30pm and I did not know until I woke up at 6:30am.

I have alerts for Open and Close however my phone goes to Sleep during rest hours.

I have now set it to automatically close after 10 minutes of being open as a safety measure but is quite annoying.

does the non homekit version work with home assistant ?

  • Is this the same thing, for $15.85 delivered:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/396802950436

    • app looks similar, unit obv doesn't

      • Same thing for 1/4 the price.

  • My garage door motor already has a wifi function. If I can get it onto Homebridge, is there a point in getting this still? I don't know yet because I haven't moved in. Thanks!
