Low price on this full sized mechanical keyboard from Rapoo in the colour white. While I don't think the switches are hot swappable it's using brown switches. There's also a removable top cover that makes the keycaps high or low profile.

Like others it has customisable colour backlighting, programmable keys and USB C connectivity.

  • Customizable Rainbow RGB Backlit,
    About this item
Customizable RGB: Choose from 20 lighting modes, adjust the brightness and speed, create your own colors and effects for the most immersive RGB experience.

Review written by "Andrew" on 15 June 2025 indicate this is fixed zone lighting, i.e. different zones of the keyboard has a fixed colour, you cannot customize the per-key lights.

Then again this video from 10 years ago shows off RGB functionality, so maybe Andrew got a knock-off KB or didn't install the right driver.

    • What's the chances Andrew didn't download the software? Many keyboards give you limited backlight control with the shortcut keys.

      • Doesn't look like the software supports per key lighting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EDSkV86rBY

        • Unrelated… if the pre discount price is above $59 does that make shipping free for non Prime even if the discount is lower?

          • @Clear:

            1. For this deal, free delivery was confirmed with a non-Prime account.
            2. From what I observed, free delivery will be offered if it is a coupon that brings the price below $59. I don't have the exact rules in my mind because it is more accurate and easier to let Amazon's checkout to work it out.
            • @alvian: Given point 2 and that I'm Prime, maybe this safer me to keep adding delivery? Just don't want to give you extra unnecessary work 😉

              • @Clear: I have no preference either way. All posts are checked for (in)accuracy the same way.

      • +2

In all fairness, the software for cheaper keyboards typically are a coin flip between "This looks like it was written when Windows XP was the primary OS of choice" to "This bricked my keyboard upon installation"

    • Finally got around to trying this KB and Andrew is correct. Each row is a fixed colour, only effect can be changed.

Seems there are a few variants of V500, and the list of V500 software on their page is a mess.
The one that works is listed as "V500 Driver" (filename is "Rapoo_V500DIY_setup 1.0.3.8(V500 DIY Gaming Keyboard).exe")

You can change the effects for the key LEDs but not the colour or effect for the bottom LEDs. (FN+DEL and FN+INS for that). Can also remap keys and create macros.

  • hows this suitable for office use with clicky brown switches.

Rapoo calling it a gaming keyboard. Definitely not office friendly unless you want to be hated

      • 2nd pic says its suitable for gaming & office. took me so long to find a good one for office.

Hot swap with Outemu silent switches. You can still get tactile and quiet.

          • @Clear: at what cost?

            • @Bearlion: My office/onsite mech keyboard:

              AliExpress:
GMK61 Hotswap keyboard (with switches and caps) $33.27USD
Swap switches for Outemu silent cream yellow (70) $15USD

              • @Limbot: If we're talking switches, I can recommend Outemu ice snow (linear) switches. No mushiness at the end of the keystroke, a slight ping perhaps on a few of them, but not enough to warrant lubing them all, and pretty damn quiet. Although I would prefer a slightly heavier spring, which I'm still considering finding. But that's completely personal preference.

The previous Outemu silent tactile switches I've tried I haven't liked at all because of the mushy end to the keystroke. I could even use the word hate for those.

But the Ice Snows are good. I paid about $30 AUD for 90.

At least it's not MX blues

      • Not necessarily being hated if you are surrounded by vibe programmers.

    • +2

Cherry Brown should be tactile but silent. Cherry Blue is the clicky type. Not sure if Rapoo follows the colour key type convention though.

    • +1

Brown are tactile but not that loud. Still slightly louder than reds or membrane though.

Brown switches are usually tactile, not clicky - and in my experience, tactile switches aren't any louder than membrane keyboards in an open office.

I've asked a few coworkers and they all said clicky switches sound annoying (had one for the Escape key), but tactiles were fine.

My secret guilty pleasure: Watching out for these office keyboard and mouse wireless deals

  • +1

How is Rapoo's quality and reputation? I bought a mechanical keyboard "made in China" for $49 during lockdown from Ozsales. Some keys stopped working after a year.

    • +1

Rapoo is alright. Sometimes better than Logitech for officeware

    • +1

Rapoo are pretty reputable, on the cheaper tier of accessories.

For example, they have a VT9 Pro mouse which uses the same sort of sensor that the very high end gaming mice from other brands, at a fraction of the price.

I think people have argued their software is a bit crap, but as a Logitech-only accessory user for a very long time, I've found the Rapoo build quality has been on par, using a few mice and keyboards from them.
Logitech has had some major failures in QC on certain products over the years.

  • +1

not sure putting a cover on the keyboard base turns it into a low-profile keyboard..

  • shame about the color

    • That's individual choice, I liked the colour, but it shows currently unavailable

  • Currently unavailable.

  • Anyone got alternatives? I would like backlighting and mechanical.

  • How would something like this compare to something like a Redragon K668? I'm trying to find a cheap but good mechanical keyboard for gaming and aren't sure what to go with

    • +2

K668 is better at first glance since the switches are hot swappable. If you don't like the sound/feel you can put new switches in.

      • That's what I'm thinking too - and then if anything happens down the line or something gets damages/broken, it seems easy enough to fix

        • +2

Yep pretty much. You can go down the route of keyboards where every component including the board is replaceable but that costs $$$

          • @Clear: Yeah, I don't need anything that fancy and expensive, but just want something good enough for gaming that'll last for at least a bit without breaking/dying/having issues!
