The GearWrench (85597) 12-Piece Metric Ratcheting Open End Wrench Set is currently selling for $68.80 at Amazon and Bunnings, you pick your evil. Good deals for a good set of spanners, they come with a Lifetime warranty. These are currently around $200 at other stores, I believe Amazon has had them for a similar price in the past.

. Open end quickly ratchet nuts and bolts without removing the wrench from the fastener
. 72-tooth ratcheting box end needs a minimal 5° to move fasteners vs. 30° for standard wrenches

. Manufactured from alloy steel for better strength and longer tool life
. Bright, full polish chrome finish easily wipes clean and resists corrosion

Bunnings is special order but nice they are matching amazon , thought bunnings got out of gearwrench on shelves as they did the big clearance a while back. Might have been as sydney total and amazon have them on special so often they got sick of price matching and couldn’t get bunnings exclusive sku.

  • Appears to be out of stock on Amazon already, but the Bunnings link still works, am I allowed to change the main link to Bunnings?

  • +2

Amazon link doesn't appear to be metric. Bunnings link is metric though

    • Great pickup!

    • It was metric, but they changed the listing when it sold out.

      • Part # reflects imperial

    • +5

      Amazon deal is for Imperial?

Jeff Bezos: "I am altering the deal - pray I don't alter it any further…."

Or for $69 get the 12 piece from Sydney Tools (9412BE part number as opposed to 85597) and a 28 piece metric and SAE socket set: https://sydneytools.com.au/product/gearwrench-9412be-12pce-c…

    • +4

I think you have to spend $300 to receive the socket set.

    • -2

      These are a better set.

      • The open end doesn't ratchet

        • -1

          Nor does the gearwrench

          • +1

@twobit: They're both gearwrench. Op link is 85597 which has open end Ratchet.

          • +2

@twobit: The gear wrench has a small pawl on the open end , so it ratchets , it what makes it different to their other open end sets, Also this set is bright chrome plated, the Sydney tools one is matt back finish, not sure if it's as corrosions resistant as the bright chrome finish one. Last set I got of this was in 2020 and it was $89, so this is a good price if you click n collect from bunnings. Have actually just ordered another set as some spanners have been lost from the set. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=3556956937931737

            • @garage sale: My black set is rust free a few years on. Quite like it

              • +1

@DarwinBoy: Hoping this is the case since I jumped on the Sydney Tools deal and picked up yesterday. I do treat my stuff well and store them properly, not in a big jumbled bag (no judgement, tools are made to be used).

                • +1

@yamumma: My little black case is going strong. But I'm more partial to using the socket set mostly. I'm not sure how far I can push the gear mechanism but I'm pretty rough with the sockets and so far so good there.

  • +1

lol wow. i bought these yesterday because i noticed an email from camels i set up ages ago. Must be patented or something to have been so expensive before.. feels a bit creepy that it ended up being a deal on ozbargain. almost like someone noticed me buying something on clearance in a hidden corner of a shop, except there is no physical shop

think the ratchet on the open end wouldn’t be as strong as normal open end but it is convenient at time and by hand you are limited in how tight you can do up nuts. There seems to lots of companies now with mods to open end to make them grip better if nuts are partially rounded, e.g toolpro-x from supercheap, facom 441, milwauke , etc but in those instances use the ring end not open. They are a great set at this price.

It's showing $116.41 on Amazon now.

yeah, if near bunnings it’s the way to go and special order

  • Thanks, ordered a set from Bunnings. I've never used open end ratcheting spanners, would be interesting to finally have a go at them. Also I'd rather order from Bunnings cuz warranty is easier than going through Amazon.

    • Picked up a 85597 set from Bunnings and found out that it no longer has a ratcheting open end? Looks like they've removed the pawl. Did you have any luck with your order?

      • +1

I've received mine. As far as I understand, there's no gear mechanism in the open end, it's how the jaw's shaped that allows you to "ratchet" without taking the spanner out and reset.

Try it on a nut or a bolt and see for yourself. I'm pretty happy with how it works, but I don't think the open end is gonna handle a lot of torque.

        • +1

Cheers for that. Had an older Gearwrench set that had a spring loaded pawl to assist taking up the play in one direction so was surprised to see they've changed it. Feels like a quality set otherwise.

  • +1

I prefer a ratcheting socket wrench anytime because these thin body wrenches really hurts my palm when theres stubborn bolt involved. These wrenches are the last resort.

However this set is a must have if you have a free spinning bolt for example the control arm bushing. It stops the bolt from spinning when you loosen the nut with the socket set. It's also comparable light so it reduces fatigue especially when you have your arms up in the air for hours. No fumbling around changing socket heads, just grab one and start wrenching.

Im a big fan of GW stuff. Nothing loose fitting everything just works and the smooth bright polish really shows it's finishing quality.

  • +5

This is a speed wrench, it isnt meant for breaking fittings loose or final tightening, it shines in low/medium torque situations alloiwing you too quickly work fittings that are to stiff to turn by hand or arent too tight/dont need to be tight.

You will still need a regular open end for tightening//untightening in most case, for example working on your car etc

If you need regular go and get the 9412 on sale atm which will be a lot more useful for every day use.

    • I don't think they claim this unsuitable for loosening or tightening bolts do they? So it will still be eligible for lifetime warranty if you use it as a breaking tool and you can take it back to bunnings and ask for a replacement if they do break.

      • +2

They dont need to claim incorrect/correct use of a tool, that is what some would reffer to as common sense… It will slip and its dumb - right tool for the right job. Bunnings wont replace a speacial order in most cases - its not stock they hold, Lifetime warranties are a lot harder to collect sometimes than they should be especially with gearwrench as you can read up on the internet ymmv. Wish you the best of luck with it.

        • It's a matter of efficiency. Sure it's the better way to protect your tools but takes more time and these tools can take heavy beating until they break so hey I'm just saying it's possible and not dumb, as long as it won't void warranty terms.
I'm more used to sockets btw so I rarely use ratchet spanners if at all. Always breaker bar and electric ratchet if there's enough clearance.

  • What an absolute steal this is. Thanks op!!

  • Where are these made?

    • The pack says China, I would have thought they are made in Taiwan.

      • Thanks for letting me know. Insane how this information is so difficult to find online. Anyway, saved me $68!

  • Anyone get this set from Bunnings and realise the 85597 set no longer has a ratcheting open end?
