Kelvinator Split Cycle Air Conditioner Not Working - Error Message FO

l have a 7 year old Split Cycle Kelvinator A/C, when l turn the A/C on in the cool mode l get the error message FO and the fan works but no cold or refrigerated air comes out.

Does anyone know what it is? Is it something that can be repaired and not cost too much or do l need a new A/C?

What's your contact details, let me send you an aircon technician.

    • Why doesnt OP consult with Mr Google

    7 years old… I’d prob consider a new one.

The time it takes for call out, diagnose, source parts etc these days you may as well imo

For AC, 7 years isnt that old, typical manufacturers warranty is like 5 years.

Yep, so its out of warranty, so as they said….. call out, fix etc, might as well buy a new one.

I work in the industry and if your AC costs less than 2-3k I wouldn't recommend fixing. Will likely cost a few hundred dollars for diagnosis and can easily cost $1000+ for repairs depending on what's wrong.
It's not that they can't be fixed, just that money is better spent on a new product with warranty on the entire AC rather than just the replaced part.

I agree with this and it's due to the high cost of labour in Australia. The same goes with other electronics, like Apple products.

And when you get a new one, you also get a new warranty.

That said, it's better to first stay proactive with warranty. If you are still in warranty and notice even the smallest of problems, always report it and get it fixed. Even if it's out of warranty, log a warranty call anyway and argue with the manufacturer that they need to cover it under Australian Consumer Law. You've got nothing to lose.

It's a bit of a joke that ACs that are 7 years old are being thrown in landfill. Go over to asia and the ACs in some hotels/home are yellow in colour because they've been operating for 20+ years just fine.

Does anyone have an idea of the exact problem with the F0 error message and the fan still working but no cold air

    • Have a look at the outdoor unit and see if that fan is spinning.

      • +2

First try a reset (turn the circuit breaker with the air con off for a bit, then on) - that sometimes fixes electrical glitches …

I am betting it will be a spider/ant/bug nest on the PCB, only the best companies resin dip their boards to protect against this :/

The ones I know of that do are Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Fuji … the ones I know don't are Daikin (and probably the rest of the "cheapies") :/

        • +1

Came to say this. A hard reset would be probably a good first step. See if the outdoor unit is blocked with leaves or anything.

I'd be calling the manufacturer directly and asking if they have any discounts if the unit isn't worth repairing. Some manufacturers do this and will take off the call out fee and give you a discount for buying a new one directly from them.

        • My Mitsubishi heavy industries died 2 months out of warranty.

          • @tessel: They are all engineered to fail …

It's just that if a Daikin fails in the first 3 months by something nesting in it, you get ZERO … ZERO warranty, ZERO help, nada :/

            • @7ekn00: Totally agree they are designed to fail regardless of brand.

    • None of the error codes for that brand start with F , have you checked the manual? Or are you a troll ?

    Error Message FO

It just wants to be left alone.

    • +2

I was trying to think of a polite way of saying this. You nailed it.

  • +8

Did you even attempt to google F0 error? There is a tonne of info.

    • +10

Why, when you can just get ozbargainers to do all your hard work?

      • +3

A tale as old as time.

        • Even I don't know how old time is.

  • +2

    Did you try googling it?

    Try kelvinator error message FO

  • +4

A Kelvinator "FO" error message typically indicates a fault with the outdoor unit's fan or the communication between the indoor and outdoor units, often due to a problem with the fan motor, a refrigerant leak, or a faulty sensor. To troubleshoot, first try a system reset by turning the power off for several minutes. If the error persists, you should contact a qualified technician

often due to a problem with the fan motor, a refrigerant leak, or a faulty sensor

      So basically anything…..

  • +3

Google says control board failure. Took less time than posting this reply.

  • +1

Have you checked the obvious things? Maybe someone jammed a stick in the fan.

  • +1

Looks like OP cannot use google as it takes only a minute to get results as people have indicated above.

My 12 year samsung aircon also had a fault code, quote to fix was more then buying a new unit.

Save yourself the call out fee and buy a new unit instead.

I replaced it with Mitsubishi heavy industries unit

  • Honestly, OP, if you'd just typed that title into Google you'd have your answer already.

We have a 20(?)yo daikon in the family room which get a fair amount of use. As part of our plans to wean ourselves off gas, we installed a number of splits throughout the house 18m ago and I must admit the newer ones are Much quieter and barely register any power consumption. When the family rm dies, I will spend Many seconds wondering what to do next,,,,

    • 20(?)yo daikon in the family room

Definately time to replace that. I'd suggest a nice carrot.

    Error Message FO

    😲

  • error message is short for FUBAR ?

  • FO I think is low refrigerant levels. (in simple terms the fluid that runs through the pipelines is low)

When did you last service it, let me guess 7 years ago when you installed it.

During a service they usually check the refrigerant levels and top up if necessary. Do a hard restart then check again, if its refrigerant levels should clear for a while, but likely come back again. Refrigerant can be lost over time especially if the pipework wasn't 100% perfect.

I'd say call some service people/installers and ask them honestly about this specific error and if its worth them coming to look at it. If they are competent they'll be able to explain the usual causes of the error and if they can rectify it with a service or not.

There is a handful of decent people around that may even come out to take a look then quote you for a new system if its too difficult rather than just charging you a call out.

  • Get a new one. Installation cost shouldn't be too bad as the electrics are already there, holes drilled etc. We had a 9yo Fujitsu split that faulted and I didn't even consider getting it repaired and just got a new one.

  • Had similar issue and error with Daikin, refrigerant levels low. Got them to come out but as the unit was 1 month past 5 yrs, they charged for diagnosis, leak finding, etc and basically ended up regassing the unit, but mentioned there was a microleak in the outdoor unit so the solution isn't permenant. The whole deal ended up costing more than a new unit.

Aircon still works a couple of years after, but not as cold as originally installed.

If you want to risk it and save a little money, get someone out to do a service and regas, otherwise, do what other's say and get a new unit

  • Error FO = Fk off

    means it's fine
