hi Op wouldn't be fair to state in you deal wordings such as : this computer was released 5 years ago, so buyer beware for the state of the battery and condition of this 5 year old computer .

      • +5

Wnat's wrong with tanastra trying to point out an important issue? RUOK yourself?

        • -2

It isn't a reasonable ask to put on every single sale of a used item. You describe in detail the condition it will be in, and provide a warranty. Happy to recieve negs but asking silly unreasonable things from businesses is just whack.

If thats what OZB wants I expect the same comment on every single used item post lol.

          • @Dvbargain: We are talking about used laptop here. State of battery health is an important thing to know before you buy one. Common sense.

            • -3

@edfoo: Yes and it was posted in the OP. So whats the issue that needs a ridiculous "buyer beware" statement that no business is ever going to write on their product unless its an "as-is" broken sale of something

Come back to reality lads and ladies

@Dvbargain: Asking to put the year on is more than reasonable.

At 5 years old laptop batteries are typically shot - the claim of 70% life now will be like 40% within 2 years of use.

Personally I'd pay near double and look at ~3 year old Gen 12 Intel CPU's - with battery life around 80% of new and good for a couple of years more before getting down to this state. I say that, and I typically buy refurb laptops from "reboot IT" in VIC, never been put wrong on 2nd hand goods.

            • @DisasterArea: Oh yeah I would never buy this one - B grade, scratches and keyboard marks on screen with 70% battery life (which to your point means…bad!)

I guess i'm just confused on the expectation that a business is going to essentially tell you not to buy their product, they're not going to do that, and they're not obligated to, they're obligated to correctly describe the item, which as far as I can tell…they have?

              • @Dvbargain: See there's the point, you're saying B grade, I've had a look at the site and thet only description that leaps out at me was "very good- refurbished" , which further down looks like its near perfect… which is it? I cannot tell.

                Very Good - Refurbished:

Cosmetic Condition: The item shows minimal wear. It is fully functional and has been professionally refurbished, tested, inspected and cleaned to very good condition.
Battery: Very good to excellent condition. Holds a charge 70% to 100%. Demonstrating minimal to medium degradation

They also show lots of pictures of the device, now you can say that is just for awareness of the design, but it sure gives the impression they're pictures of the actual unit… but they're not are they, as they look FLAWLESS….

No issue with it at the price, I just wish refurb places whould take pics of the actual unit they're selling, expecially any marks , blemishes, or failed LCD pixels and give you the manufacture date. Maybe even the serial number (might be a stretch) as lenovo will have all this on file

                • +1

@DisasterArea: Yeah agreed, should be real pictures, just plain transparency!

I think Ozb folk had a knee jerk reaction that i'm saying the seller did everything perfect and this is a great deal…no, i'm not saying that. I'm saying it's basically a silly thing to imagine a business is going to put the literal words "BUYER BEWARE THIS PRODUCT IS OLD YO" on their sale page. Cmonnnnnnnnnnn. They're trying to sell them. They are going to market them, to get purchased!

If they've properly described the unit (not saying this particular seller has or hasn't) and not misled anyone, then it's up to the buyer to decide if that unit meets their needs. You don't see Harvey Norman listing 8Gb RAM laptops with a warning that says "3 TABS OF CHROME WILL USE THIS WHOLE 8GB RAM DON'T BUY THIS LAPTOP" do you? We need to take some personal responsibility, do our own research and we should be collectively mocking people who are asking businesses to put "buyer beware" on products that they're trying to sell, cos it just ain't going to happen lmao (unless it's a "broken take as is" type sale)

  • I think it's Gen 1 as well…

  • Surely this statement is misleading?

"Excellent battery life (70% or above battery health)"

  • Can anyone confirm if this is the correct battery?

Battery life below 80% is not good for the overall longevity, for anyone wondering. YMMV.

  • I agree. In my experience all bets are off below 70% SOH for a laptop. I’ve seen 68% battery health lasting 15-20 mins instead of 3-4 hours for older batteries. The BMS’s SOH can be misleading

    • If they're saying when new it could go for 10 hours battery tests and now it goes for 7 hours, that's a reasonable statement.

If they're saying (like apple does with phones) that the battery peak power output cannot be sustained beyong 70%, then you're looking at a machine shutting itself down if you start do do anything taxing on battery, i.e having to keep the CPU in low power modes and dim the screen , but also it tapers off fast and you're lucky to get 2-3 hours untethered.

An Iphone charged daily can be at ~80% at three years and still useable, but add a couple more on that and apple have to start slowing down the CPU to not crash the phone , they admitted thats why peoples phones "feel slower" and got shamed into providing a battery swap and performance restore service. I wouldn't buy a 5 year plus laptop unless I knew it was only going to be good for untethered sessions in the 1-2 hour range.

i.e. this is useless as a laptop if you're thinking of taking it to work/school.
