    What's inside these drives?

    • +1

      WD only kidding, a seagate

Spindle, actuator, read and write heads, voice coil, PCB, magnets, gaskets and of course, the all important platters.

  • why WD 5TB in Aliexpress is so cheap?

    • +14

Because you will actually receive a 128gb hard drive made to look like 5tb

  • good price but should I purchase this over Samsung Portable SSD T5 1TB?
I don't need a big storage. 1TB is enough. Budget is around this price.
Let me know your thoughts. thx.

    • I got both.

I have a 5TB for back up of my backups.

And i carry the 1TB SSD around in my back pack to dump files from my PC once in a while.

Every month ill do a back up dump of my 1TB into my 5TB.

But If you dont have much big files then get the 1TB and maybe cloud back up storage.

Microsoft 365 Family subscription costs $179/year and allows for 6 accounts each with 1TB cloud storage. Provided it is just for backup and you don't need frequent access to the files it is a pretty good deal.

If you are actually needing 5TB of backup I would take that over a single external HDD.

        • +1

Thats each year subscription though. This is a one time fee and you own it in perpetuity

          • @stevtom27: That is true to a point, but I have been caught out before where i forgot to back up and lost some important data or photos.

Auto save via Cloud is such an important tool to have when you have a busy lifestyle or schedule.

            Highly recommended.

          • +1

@stevtom27: If you buy one and all your data is on it and the HDD shits itself you have lost several terabytes of data.
3-2-1 method of data backup = 3 Copies, 2 Different mediums, 1 offsite.

At least buy 2 and duplicate the data but don't rely on a single external drive for anything you will miss.

Why does everyone feel the need to shill subscription based models? Do you enjoy not owning anything?

          • @AUBRX: Because it is a safe viable option to ensure you have a proper backup strategy for important data? It is also pretty decent value since many people also need at least a couple of the office suite programs.

I do prefer owning things which is why I have 22tb combined storage across different RAID and NAS systems for my media and personal files. I also have multiple (free and paid) cloud storage accounts for the data that is most critical and that I would hate to lose.

If I have some drive failures I still have all my movies and TV shows safe. If my house burns down I still have my personal documentation and family photos/videos safe in cloud storage, in a situation like that I am going to be thankful that I forked out the extra for the cloud storage.

By all means, dump everything on a 5tb external and don't buy cloud storage. Don't pretend like it isn't a viable backup option though.

    • Read the following re. SSDs as storage drives and go from there. External HDD is much more of a store and forget solution than external SSDs.

  • Suitable for use for long term/infrequently accessed storage? Comments on previous deals indicate that 2.5" drives aren't super reliable so wondering if this 3.5" is likely to be better.

Annoyingly only ssd's frequently come with usb-c. I don't need the speed but this is to back up phones so not needing adaptors is nice..

Was looking at ~2tb but deals on larger never is a bad thing lol

    • Probably due to Seagate Rosewood series drives:

      • Ah, so Seagate 3.5" or WD w.5" then!

      • That is very informative. Thanks for sharing that article, had no idea those drives were that bad.

    • +1

My Seagate 5TB STHP5000401 i got 5 years ago is still working fine and it's plugged in most of the time and used often.

    • wondering if this 3.5" is likely to be better

This isn't a 3.5" drive. But for archival needs, yes a 3.5" drive (usually labelled 'desktop' since they need an external 12v power supply) is an ideal choice if you don't get an SSD.
