Android App Error - Neocal - Dependency on Amazon AppStore

Hi All,

I need some help regarding an Android app I had purchased on the Amazon play store. The app is called 'Neocal Advanced Calculator' and I have been using it over the last 5 or so years. Recently over the last few months, I have been getting this weird error message (https://imgur.com/a/w6rqibD) which is really annoying especially since the Appstore has not been uninstalled on my phone. So now I have tried the following options.

  1. Backed up the APK file and un-installed the app and then re-installed the app again. Message still appears.
  2. Tried downloading the APK file from another site and trying the same steps of uninstalling and re-installing the new file. Message still appears.
  3. I even tried to find the app on Google Play Store and couldn't find there - I am guessing its been removed.

I am at a loss now on what to do since the Amazon Appstore has officially stopped for non-Fire devices. Can anyone help me obtain an APK file that is not "linked" to the Amazon Appstore so I can continue using the app. Or suggest a way to "un-link" the app from the Amazon Appstore.

Regards,
J

To remove the "Amazon Appstore Required" message, you need to find the Neocal Advanced Calculator's settings and disable the feature that relies on the Amazon Appstore. Since the Neocal calculator is designed for Amazon Fire tablets, these settings will be located within the tablet's main Settings menu.

Here are the general steps to find the setting:
Open Settings: On your Amazon Fire tablet, find and open the main Settings app.
Locate Apps & Features: Look for a section related to Apps or Applications.
Find the Neocal Advanced Calculator: Within the app list, find and select the Neocal Advanced Calculator.
Check for Amazon Appstore Integration: Look for any options related to the Amazon Appstore, in-app purchases, or app store features within the calculator's specific settings.
Disable the Feature: Turn off the feature that is triggering the Amazon Appstore requirement.

    • Hi,

Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, I have the S24+ phone so it is a non-Fire device. I did look through all the settings in both the Neocal app as well as the Settings -> Apps page to see if there was any integration options and I could not find any. Went through all the settings and there wasn't any related to Amazon at all.

Anything else that I could try?

  • Am surprised there are not 200,000 other calc apps that could be used …

Weird your device is locked only to this calculator app :P

    • Haha, I have looked at so many apps to get over this one but I really love this for the fact that it has all the types together by simply swiping left or right (I use the basic, scientific and financial ones mainly). If you can suggest any other calc apps that has similar features, I'm all ears.

You're almost certainly out of luck, it would be a hard coded lisence check to make sure you actually paid for it, and the Amazon Appstore would return nothing now so it shows you a default error. The company seems to have gone belly up so no chance of them fixing it either.

However, you can patch out the lisence check in very old apps with a bit of technical fiddling, give Lucky Patcher a try first as it doesn't require you to root your device and has a dedicated routine for patching out Amazon Appstore checks, otherwise look into Frida: https://www.luckypatchers.com/download/

(Not piracy advice, this doesn't work on apps made in the last ~7 years, only useful for app preservation and abandonware)

    • Thanks a lot; I will test it out later in the evening and see if I have any luck.

    • Just thought I'd respond with an update. I tried the Lucky Patchers but it didn't work so I am going to try Frida next. But I think I may have to accept the fact that this app is gone and I need to find a really replacement for it.

  • I'm waiting for, 'Should have bought an iPhone..' ;)

So tempted to say that but have been team Android since day one :) Having said that, would you believe the app is there on the Apple Store? I really can't see the reason for not having the app on Google Play. I was even happy to pay again for it if it was available on Google.

      • Weird, as Android is usually cheaper to develop for, and more flexible???

        • I asked my partner to check the Apple Store directly for the app and it seems it's not listed there anymore. I think one of the websites I checked was giving an incorrect hit. So I take back my statement on it being in the Apple Store.
