From experience, expensive headphones lead to more screaming wife, not less.

You want Mack’s earplugs for that. I use it when my parents are fighting n throwing shit around and it works great

Depends on the aspects of audio performance you're chasing. The more you're chasing in a total package or the more you're pushing the limit of some aspect of technical performance in a headphone, the higher you'll tend to climb.

If you're looking for tonal balance, strong technical ability with great staging and imaging I would probably stop in that $700-$1500 range, including the HD800S for sub-$1500 if you prefer it over something like the HIFIMAN Arya Unveiled or now apparently the HIFIMAN HE600. Directly from China (mostly Taobao) there's also the Nan-7, and the XK-Audio Serene if you want to trade in some resolution for a more physical bass presentation.

But if you're happy to EQ you might get a lot of value out of the Edition XS for $300ish with AliE deals for resolution, and - without any real need to EQ - the Sennheiser HD 6XX/650 for $300 for excellent timbre for normally difficult things like vocals and piano. Others are now bobbing up in that $300-$400 price bracket too, but offering similar overall value and different strengths and weaknesses.
