All Time Low Price for this New Type EV Charger.

Since none of the new EVs come with a slow/trickle/granny charger, I was on the look out for a charger with good reviews. This Vinlen Charger differs from most of the rest as the AC cable is 10m and the Unit with the Type 2 End plugs directly into the car as compared to the rest which have a pretty short AC cable and a long Type 2 Cable & Plug.

I have been using it for the past 2 weeks and works really well. Unfortunately, I needed it for a trip and paid full price 2 weeks ago!

  • Don't EV's come with a slow charger like this?

      • Mine did…

        • Which Car?

        • My Kia also came with one.

Perhaps they have stopped including them with the 2025 model though. If that’s the case, you should ask the dealer to throw one in - if they want the sale, they will do it.

@King Steuart: Nice I got a Geely EX5 which came with the 7KWH Charger but I am renting so not worth paying the high cost to install. This works well for my needs and is easy to use.

      • Basically every EV but a Tesla comse with a 'grannie' charger

      • Yes they do. My G6 has one. The Geely comes with one. BYD does.

  • What's the difference between this slow charger and the slow chargers that come with EVs?

    • -3

None of the new EVs come with a slow charger. But this one differes from most of the rest as the AC cable is 10m and the Unit with the Type 2 End plugs directly into the car as compared to the rest which have a pretty short AC cable and a long Type 2 Cable & Plug. Mine came with an 8amp charger so a 15amp charger can charge it twice as fast. Needs a 15amp circuit though. Good middle ground from a 32amp circuit which could be overkill for some people’s needs.

Pretty much none of the Amazon chargers are RCM certified so buyer beware if you need to make an insurance claim for whatever reason.

    • It's got CE certification but no report of having the tick. Seems that it's being sold by Vinlen out of an Amazon warehouse in Australia, not needing to be imported from overseas at the time of purchase, so how does that work? Are they claiming that they are actually selling the product from overseas but it's just in a holding pattern, not being supplied to the Australian market?

      • +1

CE Certification is not accepted in Australia. RCM tick is. I personally would spend an extra $30-50 on one (lots out there) that have the RCM tick.

        • Can you point to maybe one or two examples for us of the RCM tick that are similarly priced for 15amp?

          • @tommypickles: I got this one for $260 when they had a good special. Does 2.6kWh so I just leave it on during the day to use excess solar.
            https://ultipower.com.au/products/mida-adjustable-portable-e…

This one is also recommended on some EV pages i'm on, again wait for it to be on special.
            https://inchargex.com.au/products/portable-ev-charger-type-2…

Yes, at the current price they are $100 or so more. Yes, I got mine on special. Even at $100 difference i'd rather peace of mind if you need to ever make an insurance claim. Small price to pay IMO. If you can wait for it to be on special then you'll save a bit more on the MIDA. You don't want to be arguing with the insurer if your house burnt down.. $100 now over $800k+ payout to rebuild.

            • @kojihama: Cheers. Yeah only problem is these options are 5m cables. Still looking for a 7m or like this one a 10m. Appreciate the heads up on other brands though!

              • @tommypickles: Most portable one's i've seen at 15amp are only 5m. 32amp there are a couple of options on those pages with 7m cable. If you wanted to stick with 15amp you would try a type2-type2 extender cable, though you may lose some ampage.

          • @tommypickles: I was in the market for a 10M 15A charger and narrowed it down to this one or the model from evchargers.com.au: https://evchargers.com.au/product/portable-charger-15a/
Bought the ev chargers one and it is great.

The VINLEN product website does not even list this model in their lineup. The EV Chargers model costs $375, but considering the cost of purchasing an EV, paying a little more for RCM certification and a reputable local company that knows the product well is worth it.

The VINLEN charger might use quality components, but without RCM certification it is clear importers of these products while it isn't mandatory aren't going to go through the effort of compliance which may impact their cost to sell.

Most buyers see the aussie plug and go "sweet, it fits" and will likely NOT experience their car burning in their front yards or losing all their possessions in a house fire. It is just concerning that authorities have the door completely open allowing these uncertified products to be sold on commercial platforms like Amazon Australia.

You aren't going to stop the tide of Aliexpress products being bought by individuals but there seems to be a complete lack of knowledge by the general public or a position statement from authorities around this. EV buyers aren't immune to saving a buck and while not being alarmist I suppose all we need now is one of those sad episodes to put it all in the spotlight and realise more could of been done.

            • @darmz: Here's the problem as most people will see it
              15 amp charger with 10 metre cable purchased via Amazon.com.au = $200
15 amp charger with 10 metre cable purchased with 3rd Party website with RCM sticker = $375

How much trust is required to pay nearly double the price for that RCM sticker? How does one verify that it is a legit RCM verification? There's no box displayed on the website, no manual listed.

And of trust, what do we know about EVChargers? Reading their Terms & Conditions they state in SECTION 13 – DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES; LIMITATION OF LIABILITY and SECTION 14 – INDEMNIFICATION they hold no responsibility if there was a problem.

I'd roll the dice on Amazon.com.au frankly.

    • No to mention using it on a 10A socket with an illegal dongle.

  • +1

I prefer having the ‘box with the electronics’ seperate from the CCS2 plug end - that way, I can plug it in inside the garage, while the car is outside. In the event that it rains, the box is protected inside, not exposed to the elements..

  • I have an aftermarket one for my Tesla.

I wouldn't buy again, because unbeknownst to me at the time, the Tesla one had a button on it which allows you to disconnect if the phone key is in range.

I know Tesla added a feature where you can hold the rear left passenger door handle for 3 seconds to trigger an unlock if the phone key is nearby, which makes life a bit more convenient with an aftermarket charger.

The Tesla Mobile charger was going to be my next purchase - unless anyone is aware of this or another aftermarket with an unlock button.

    • My MG PHEV let me disconnect by using the unlock button (even if the car is already unlocked). I just push the button in my pocket as I wander to the carport and I can hear the solenoid retract before I get there.

You can also release by disconnecting the 12v Control Pin wire - I have an ESP32 controlling a relay via Home Assistant so I can toggle charging on or off at scheduled times, without needing to tinker with the high-current contactor in the charger. It's not a consumer-friendly solution, but a lot cheaper than a $1k 'wifi' charger that does the same job.

      • Yes you can physically disconnect it by pushing a button on the phone, in the car, or holding the rear door handle.

But the magic with the Tesla mobile charger is that you can just press a button on it and if you are authenticated (car unlocked or phone key in range) it’ll just come out.

Guess I’ll just have to fork out for it if I want this luxury.

As for the timed charging you can just use the the app or if you want to integrate it with something like cost of energy you can just use the Tesla API.

  • I bought this during the Prime Day sales for $175, but haven’t used it as yet.
