This deal is insane value. The Zoom MicTrak M4 was released a couple of years ago, but unfortunately it suffered from electrical interference issues causing people to avoid it.

Zoom offered to replace all affected units, and all new stock is fixed. Regardless people are still avoiding this particular model, Zoom is now offering deep discounts to clear stock.

It has:

  • 4 Tracks. 2 from built in XY condenser microphones, and 2 from XLR inputs.
  • Uses the same high quality preamp from the Zoom F-series on the XLR inputs.
  • Uses 32-bit float recording, so no need to ever set audio gain.
  • Timecode function to sync video
  • Built in XY microphones have a built-in shock mount (but reviews suggest you should still use a separate one)

eBay sellers from Japan are selling this even cheaper (but quantity is lower).

There was a time when I considered this. Now is not that time.

  • $299 at Store DJ and a few other places as well at the moment. The eBay selling price from the Japan sellers is ex- GST so not much cheaper, plus potential return issues. Looks like a great unit.

I actually brought mine the other week from eBay. It cost AU$238 to my credit card… not bad. The seller offered free returns too. Unfortunately I can’t post that deal.

The H4essential is the obvious alternative at this price point. But that doesn’t have the superior preamp or the timecode. Others might prefer that form factor though.

      • That's a great price. Was it a Japanese seller?
How do you like the unit?

        • Yes, it was one of the Japanese sellers on eBay. I don’t have it yet, it’s currently in the post.

I don’t have it yet, so I can’t complain. I’m upgrading from an ancient Zoom H1, so I expect this will be quite a bit better.

  • Super dumb question but is this more for recording band stuff rather than person talking stuff ?

It is designed for filmmakers, musicians, podcasters, journalists, and field recordists, with the versatility to support multi-camera shoots and a wide range of professional audio-visual productions.

It can be used for literally any situation where your smartphone or camera’s built-in microphone won’t cut it.

Musicians and videographers are the main users of Zoom products. But they are generic enough that most people would fine them useful on occasion.

It’s also important to know these are cardioid microphones too. So the sound pickup will be very directional.

  • I have a zoom h5 - other than. The floating feature, does this m4 offer any advantage? For recording interviews. Time code thing sounds cool but I usually use my zoom as a mixer and just capture the audio on the camera
