I wonder what removing melatonin will do to iHerb’s sales to Australia

    • +16

Other supplements are already pretty good in Australia. Melatonin was the only reason I every bought other things from them to meet the minimum spend.

    • Why did they remove it??

      • +2

Some kids in WA ‘overdosed’ on it apparently…so the whole country is barred :/

“However, it emerged this week there had been a spike in overdoses in WA, mostly in children who had taken too many gummies and complained of sore stomachs and excessive sleepiness.”

    • Melatonin can still be imported into AU. Just gotta know where to look.

  • Does anyone know why glycine isn't sold locally e.g. Chemist Warehouse?

    • +2

I got my from ebay and amazon. Buy bulk

      • Thanks! Any recommendations? Powder better than capsules right?

        • +1

I bought FOCAL NUTRITION ( on ebay and amazon), RIP X ( om amazon ). Yes powder, because it has less filler, and I can just take whatever amout I wanted.

CW isnt sale it, may be they are too busy at selling something "bigger" https://prnt.sc/16vM5Nn-w072

          • @frewer: Thanks! Any preference between those two brands? They're practically the same price (rip X is $1 cheaper and has prime shipping).

Can you speak to the effectiveness of the supplement in supporting sleep?

I currently take 300mg magnesium glycinate which used to work wonders but finding its starting to lose it's effectiveness.

            • +1

@dajackal: I do Huberman protocol + workout, so I fall asleep pretty fast daily. I take it for muscle growth & repair, cognitive function, and liver protection. Because I take Mg for years, I combine in glycine early this year, so I can't really tell if it helps me fall asleep quicker or not. Taste-wise, they taste pretty much the same.

If you're a man, you need at least 420mg daily. Also eat some tamarind, it helps to retain up to 23mg of Mg in your body

        • I buy it from bulk nutrients

    • It's at bulk nutrients which is local.

What do you take it for if you don't mind me asking?

I read it can assist with sleep, handy due to the melatonin ban.

      • For sleep support, but I've yet to try it. The fact that it's not sold at bricks and mortar stores gave me pause for caution.

        • Fair point. Good luck as I'll try it for sleep too!

        • +1

For sleep, you should take magnesium glycinate; they work together. They also together in the production of collagen. And, yeah, you can find magnesium glycinate at CW.

          • @wisdomtooth: I currently take 300mg magnesium glycinate before bed, which used to work wonders but finding its starting to lose it's effectiveness.

Was thinking to start stacking it with 3g of glycine.

            • @dajackal: Magnesium glycinate is 90% glycine. 300mg isn't much; you can safely up the dose.

              • -2

@wisdomtooth: Really? ChatGPT told me the recommended dose is 200–300 mg

                • +1

@dajackal: Nah. Not sure what question you were asking AI.

Australian RDI for Mg is 400-420mg for an adult male.
                  https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/nutrient-reference-values/nu…

Can go higher. I'm on 600mg per Dr recommendation/directions.

Unfortunately for me Mg Glycinate and Glycine supplementation does nothing to help my sleep.

                  • @nismo: That's elemental Mg RDI! 420mg elemental Mg translates into 3g Mg glycinate, which is the amount of glycine used in studies to support sleep. No wonder you're seeing no results from it.

                    • @wisdomtooth: Honestly I don't know how to respond to the mass amount of confusion you have made out of my statements…

I never said how much Glycine I was using at all.

                      The 600mg is only magnesium.

                      • @nismo: The "you" in my reply was @dajackal, but I see I didn't make that clear.

                        • +1

                          @wisdomtooth: Apologies.
I'm always in defence mode, not by choice.

Are there any supps for that? I haven't found anything reliable…

                          • @nismo: For always being on the defence? Ashwaganda. It goes well with magnesium glycinate for a good night sleep after dinner too. I quite like this one, that is sweetened with xylitol (some dentists say it's good at preventing cavities too).

                            • @wisdomtooth: hmm I have tried almost every brand and formulation of Ashwa' by now. Have barely noticed any effects from it, good or bad.

I've even tried the patented KSM-66, Shoden & Sensoril varieties, after trying all the local (Carusos, Swisse, Bioglan, Wagner even) and US brands via iherb/amazon US

Also High Strength, low and mid options (withanolide content basically)

      • +1

This way is cheaper for sleep https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDv4AWk0J3U.

I also take 300mg-400mg of magnesium + glycine + ( sometime)L-Theanine, 30mins before bed. It knock me all very soon after 30mins.

        • +1

Similar combo for me, but with inositol powder and no glycine. Sleep like a baby.

    RIP Melatonin

Maybe. I suspect (hope) it will be like ivermectin and NAC etc, once the fuss dies down it will be 'allowed' again.

  • They do an excellent men's multi.

    • Which one?

      • +1

21st Century One Daily Men's Health Multivitamin/Multimineral Supplement 100 tabs.

        • I wonder why you would think it's an excellent men's multi? Just a question out of curiosity 🤔

          • @UncommonName: About 2 years ago I got sucked into a multivitamin rabbit hole. It was either here or Whirlpool. Can't remember exactly. But the supplement gurus there were convinced these ones were the ducks guts. Before that I was using some Blackmores variety from Woolies and they told me they were rubbish. Ha.

            • +1

@Ge3ks: They are, and so are these 21st Century One Daily. They're mostly synthetic, which at best have very low bioavailability, and in the worst case, e.g. folic acid vs methylfolate, outcompete the actual nutrient coming from the food you eat. Look for multivitamins made from food concentrates instead (preferably organic, biodynamic and non-GMO). I take this one, which goes on sale for $24 at a local health store once a month (compare the labels).

    • +2

I would suggest the 'Life Extension Two Per-Day' and then just take one

The only time worth buying from iherb these days is when you can get a decent cashback or coupon for at least 30%. Their prices have absolutely skyrocketed post-covid and they don't seem to be getting better any time soon.

  • -3

Melatonin is bad for you - just use magnesium glycinate instead…
