Always pay through the platform, NEVER outside the platform such direct debit, PayPal etc
If you can, buy from verified suppliers, read the reviews and look at the pictures the reviewers upload.
If it's a huge order, research and use your own freight forwarder or order a small batch first and check out the quality and freight process. Sellers can offer a sample for free but pay postage or pay for a sample.
Look for 'trade assurance' and research how it works to protect you as a buyer
If you let them pick the freight forwarder (which saves you the hassle), ALWAYS, ALWAYS ASK who is the freight forwarder company used and the Australian courier used. Once they give you this information, you can research of they're using a good freight forwarder.
If they don't give you this information… RUN RUN RUN!!!! This was my mistake.
While the above is to assure you as a buyer are protected as much as you can, stuff ups and dishonesty can happen, I'm currently in a trade dispute refund right now. Even though I made all the right moves EXCEPT using my own freight forwarder. Long story short, my order is "stuck" at china customs for 1+ months and they're giving me all the BS excuses with no evidence on why it's stuck. They have given me 4 excuses and not one is backed up with evidence.

I would suggest PayPal via credit card through Alibaba. That's the highest security payment through the platform.
If something goes wrong and you need a refund, you raise it with trade assurance first (reviews are mixed with that process), if that fails, then PayPal which has a high chance of winning, if that fails, do a charge back.
Step 1: You always ask for a Proforma Invoice and check ALL details on this carefully. Details about the product, details about your address, specific requirements, inclusions etc. Anything wrong, you go back and ask them to correct it.
Step 2: You always ask to pay via Alibaba Trade Assurance. It's the in-built platform where Alibaba holds payments and they have limited time to produce and ship your product. Offers you better protection.
