VW Passat 2019

Hello Guys, I have 2019 VW Passat 132kw and have driven roughly 155k. Last service (6 months ago), VW said it needs water pump replacement and thermostat housing. Also, skippy bumped it near fuel tank and there a little dent there.

Car has brand new Pirelli tyres and servicing package purchased for next 3 service.

Car is still driving fine but yesterday check engine light came up.

I am not in really good financial position but in dilemma that if I should spend 3-4 grand to get the car fixed and keep driving, get it fixed and sell it, trade the car and buy a cheap brand new Haval or Cherry or Jaecoo.

Thank you all in advance for spending your time reading it and for your suggestions.

Thank you

Sure buy a cheaper car , warranty and scheduled service at a fixed price ⁉️ But remember , they'll put it through their workshop before trading it in . So the likelihood might be that they pick up all the above mentioned faults . 🤔

    • Yes, that I know. Wasn't planning on hiding it anyway. I just don't want to deal with more problems down the road.

      • So do it already ⁉️

You need to diagnose the CEL before you can make a decision

    • Yes, doing that next week. However, was thinking about it in longer run.

  • Sell me the passat.

    • Take it

      • Drop that bad boy off, how much you want for it?

Get a second opinion from an independent specialist VW mechanic in your area. This is a common issue with VAG cars. They might be able to do it significantly cheaper.

    • Great advice. I will try to look for some

You will lose more on a new Haval / generic China SUV than you will spend on your Passat in resale imo.
With so many cheap SUVs these days, they absolutely tank in cost second hand, let alone the iffy reliability / parts availability / build quality.

IMO a 6 year old Passat is fine if you keep on top of the maintenence, if the check engine light is minor (which most of the time they are), get it fixed.

A new car doesn't mean its going to be reliable either, and thats not just a dig at Chinese cars.

    • Unless the check engine light indicates the issue is with the mechatronics which will cost $4,000 to fix. But then again, 'minor' is very subjective. I am sure that is just pocket money for some people.

      Just saying…

  • I am not in really good financial position
trade the car and buy a cheap brand new Haval or Cherry or Jaecoo

These two statements do not belong together. There are zero good reasons to buy a brand new car when you're in a financial tight spot. Buying a 2-3 year old used version of the same vehicle, that's still under factory warranty, is a far more sensible option.

As for the Passat - you won't get much money for the car if you try to sell it busted, so fixing is likely the best path. Get a couple of independent quotes before you make any decisions.

Water pump and thermostat housing is typical VW issue. You will lose more in depreciation with your Chinese alternatives that you would spend in maintenance on the VW. They also won't drive as well, and even though VW reliability isn't known to be the best, I'd trust it more than those Chinese brands.

    • Any and all VAG garbage is on par with Chinese produced cars these days. "Water pump and thermostat housing is typical VW issue." Case and point. OP should buy and older Japanese made car, Honda or Toyota (maybe Mazda) ideally

    • How much that roughly costs. VW gave me the quote of $2900.

      • Try an independent shop that specialises in vw. Can usually quote over the phone if you have the parts.

Typically for our vw it is half price eg brakes.

  • I’d get the CEL diagnosed, it could just be a sensor issue.

That servicing sounds pretty typical for a VW. I’d just get it done. You can shop around for a euro mechanic. Once the VW is maintained they drive pretty well. You’ll lose more in depreciation if you trade the car and buy a ‘cheap’ new Chinese alternative.

    • Hopefully its a minor issue and I can keep the car.
