how many mah? 5W means very slow charging?

    • Bit confusing but the 8K in the title refers to mah… it's 8,000

    $28 ($35.80 shipped) from Mobiciti
    $29.95 from BigW
Amazon have also pricematched ($33.95 shipped)

Previously $20.30 shipped earlier this year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/910368

Got 2 of these for $14.50 each from the 50% off deal solely for use as solar power banks but they both don't have the power to even charge a phone

    • The pictures and description suggests they can charge a mobile phone?

      • Yeah mine may be faulty but what are the chances of 2 out of 2 to do the same

        • 5W is real slow, but they should charge!

          8,000mah battery in that thing

          • @Droz: Yeah I know but it drops out after connecting. Only thing I can charge without issue are small bluetooth speakers

@Big-Deal: 5W charge is just way too slow these days. Phones & Tablets will often lose charge while being charged at 5W if they are under use or even if just the screen is on.

5W charge rating means that only 5V is supported (5V,1A=5W) and the actual charge power will be a decent bit less than 5W due to voltage droop impacting lower charge voltages more (higher % of voltage is lost to Vdroop). You can mitigate this somewhat by using shorter cables (eg. 30cm), and preferably newer higher-power rated short cables (eg. 30cm, 100W+). No matter how much you mitigate Vdroop you're still going to get pretty terrible charge rates on a 5W charger though.

Generally you should be looking for a minimum charger spec of 18W (9V 2A) or 22.5W (9V 2.5A) these days. The higher voltage generally allows you to get away with using longer cables and ignoring the Vdroop impact. Plus anything under 15W tends to be a nuisance these days in any case.

              • @Joku: Thanks, I will skip these.

              • @Joku: devices not charging at 5w sounds an inefficient chip in an inefficient device. my ipad pro doesnt have an issue and its definitely my thirstiest device.

id rather charge at 5W overnight than have a samsung battery fire at 3am next to my bed. there is zero reason to charge fast in that scenario.

              • @Joku: 5W is next to useless. Had a dead phone and really need a piece of information from it while in the CBD. Went to JB and asked if they could charge it for 5 mins for me, they said they cant. Didn't buy a charger as I have dozens of USB chargers at home, decided to buy a power bank that will be useful for something in the future. Bought a Cygnet with 5W max charge (this claimed to come pre charged).
Charged for 5 mins until the Galaxy S21 Ultra said 2% and powered on. Phone died before booting up. Charged for 10 mins and it gets to 4% before powering on, phone powers on but charge % drops really fast. I am able to unlock it but phone dies before I can get what I need.
Had to wait 30 mins this time before I was confident enough that I will let me use the phone for a minute.

                • @Prodev3r: When your phone is 5% or less , it's notoriously dependent on your battery health on whether it can even sustain required voltage. Booting is "expensive" as far as processors go, so if it's an old phone, that's probably it switched off. S21 is unfortunately old, so if you're on the original battery, we have the answer.

5w definitely charges your Galaxy Ultra, just 5 times slower than the maximum speed the S21 allows.

That being said, the Galaxies throttle pretty early, so whilst the current ones can do 40w, they don't do it for very long, and drop their speeds down to about 20w. So, that's 4 times faster.

I get it, it's not a fast charge, but a trickle would be absolutely fine for an extended period of time, and actually the preferable way to charge because it generates so little heat.

                • @Prodev3r: "5W is next to useless"

                  • didnt charge phone properly for the day
                  • bought a slow charger and expected it to be fast
                  • owns a samsung

lots of personal failures you're blaming on the power output.
