Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 Digital Charcoal Grill + Griddle Smoker $1234.05 + Delivery ($0 to SYD) @ The BBQ Store

WELCOME

My first post so please go easy.

I've been trying to convince the wife we NEED a smoker for afew months now. Started researching pellet smokers but I was concerned with the reported lack of smoke flavour with pellet smokers.
This one controlls the burn rate of the charcoal/wood split combination by varying the fan speed. So there is no need to manage the fire like traditional offset smokers.
I have pulled the trigger and ordered one. They are currently on order from the supplier (approx 2 weeks to your door)

Barbeques Galore did price match down to $1290 (before discount code) for those who prefer bricks and mortar store.

Unlike this Previous deal this one comes with the griddle.

The build quality seems to be a sore point with many owners, to the point where metal fabricators are making superior aftermarket parts.

However I'm willing to do a macca's run if it all goes up in flames when the family is over for a bbq

convince the wife we NEED a smoker
have pulled the trigger and ordered one

So did she say yes or no? Or is it easier to just seek forgiveness haha - asking for a friend.

Similar scenario to mine… Took ages to convince her… And now it's just a given that we are using it when the family comes over :)

I got a pallet smoker 4 years ago and upgraded to the masterbuilt 1150 just before Christmas. I find this superior in every way

  • Good get. When they work they're brilliant.
For me, it's just that I've heard too many times that the flap burns out, the app sucks and the controllers die - but you also rarely hear complaints or comments from the people that it just works for.
LSS make some good mods for them and the Fireboard 2 do great controllers, but that's also more work and more money.
FWIW - My brother in law has the larger one and loves it. Just make sure you keep it clean.

yeah well known that the control board doesn't last & the burner box disintegrates for that money I'd buy a different brand

5 years of owning the smaller 560.

Build quality isn't great, but it's holding up. The app sucked originally but they've improved it a lot since. I swapped the controller out for a Fireboard, but it worked fine up until then. Lid switches have failed when I've had grease fires - entirely my own fault for not being more stringent with cleaning.

Overall I'm happy with it. Set and forget - pellet grill convenience with charcoal grill flavour.

Have had this 800 for about 4 years

    • app is garbage
    • switches on doors are crap, I've bypassed so many of them
    • it's useless for anything other than low and slow (don't be tempted to use the griddle or for anything hot and fast)
    • mega cheap quality. For this much money you'd expect much better quality. It's cheap and flimsy.. Id recommend you go an see one in person .
    • it's a bit of a chore to keep it clean, the grease trap is small and not being diligent can result in grease fires which are scary
    • if you're planning on keeping it outside, make sure you get the cover (my cover has disintegrated after being in non direct sunlight)
  • I had the 560 a couple years ago. The electronics died on the first/second cook 3 times. Each time I exchanged and assembled a new unit (very much a flatpack experience). After the 3rd unit died I gave up and got a refund. Briefly when it worked it was amazing. Recently a family member bought the 1050 and said it had a much higher build quality.

    • so many replacement control boards out there due to this, for the money this shouldn't be happening, very well known issue

Masterbuilt are garbage build quality. Not sure what the alternatives are though.

  • I've had the 560 for about 3 years now and use it regularly. Build quality has been solid so no complaints there. The only issue I’ve run into was the lid sensor switch failing after a few grease fires, but that’s worked in my favour as it continues to burn when the lid is open. All other electronics have been working as new.
Lighting the charcoal is fairly straightforward. It’s not quite as quick as using a chimney starter, but it gets the job done without much fuss.
I mainly use it for low and slow cooks, and it’s excellent at holding temperature over long sessions. I've had no issues with the app. The only real downside is the grease buildup, which can lead to flare-ups depending on what you're cooking. I’ve learned to work around it with regular cleanouts and a bit of caution during fattier cooks.

Overall, it’s been a reliable unit for me and it delivers great results once you get used to its quirks. I'm surprised to learn that others have so much issues but it's good to know there are replacement boards for future references.

  • $1200 is a hell of a lot when you can slap a fan controller such as a smartfire on any old smoker and get the same result. Mine has been going flawless for a couple of years now, will hold a rock solid temp all night even on an uninsulated drum/bullet if you load up enough fuel.

  • I didn't see if this was your start of your low and slow journey or not. But sounds like you are in a similar position to me 4 years ago with the skeptics that you need to impress…

4 years ago I got a pallet smoker with a similar level of needing to cook to impress… I got caught with the mentality of buying cheaper pieces of meat in case I stuffed it in the first couple cooks… But I find them harder to cook and ultimately didn't impress the judges… The second issue was underestimating how long the cook would take. I always cook a "backup" cut of meat that I know will be done.

I would recommend to start with the fattier options for the first couple cooks. I would recommend a scotch fillet of pork, around the 2kg mark. Will guarantee something on the table in 6 hours and has enough fat to be juicy even if it's set too high. And you can always add some stock or sauce if it's found to be too dry…

My first major success was Cape grim beef ribs… But I used to get them pre covid for $29kg… And I can't recommend them at their current price point of over $40 with bones…

Anyway, hope this helps, if you have a plan the feel free to ignore. Just don't try a whole chicken in those first cooks… Really not worth it…
Another success I had was smoked chicken breast, smothered in a rub, 90~ Min at 120, sliced for sandwiches. Haven't done that in a while… But it was pretty good :)

  • I have owned one of these for two years and as far as a first smoker is concerned, it is very easy. The fact you can drop any coal into the drop box and itnis easy to get going, the have it self regulate the temps is fantastic.

Would i recommend one to a friend, no. The quality of the build is poor and after two years, almost ready to throw it out. To be fair, we love across from salt water so unless it is good quality steel, everything dies. Compare that to my Tucker BBQ which i just got serviced for $170 and is good as new at 12 years old.

The electric controller is sensitive to moisture as well so if it rains, make sure it is under cover. It is also a good charcoal bbq grill but I ended up getting a Tucker Charcoal bbq to go with my gas unit. The smoker will be wheeled out for council cleanup in the coming months

  • These can often be found at costco for $800
