[VIC, NSW, QLD, WA] 2m x 2m x 0.6m 4-Shelf Garage / Warehouse Shelving Unit $170 Pickup Only @ SkyTeck

Having seen recent deals for Pinnacle shelving at Bunnings, and knowing how awful the quality of those shelves are, I wanted to post a deal for better quality shelving. I don't think there is any special price on at the moment so not officially a bargain, but it's a bargain if you compare it to the Bunnings one.

Over the years, both personally and for work, I have purchased about 4 shelves from Bunnings and around 20 from elsewhere (the better quality all metal 60cm depth shelves). The quality comparison is like day and night. I hate the Bunnings shelves and would never buy one again. You might get away with the Bunnings shelves if you don't store heavy items, don't bang into them, don't get any liquid on them, and don't plan to ever move them. Even if you do treat them so carefully, the MDF will look crap or warp after a short time - which may be helped by varnishing it, but why spend effort on this when you could just purchase a better quality shelf in the first place?

Where to buy better shelves? There are many Facebook marketplace & gumtree sellers selling the better quality all metal 600mm depth shelving. Just search for something like "metal shelving" or "garage shelving" or "warehouse shelving". Common sizing is 2m (L) x 2m (H) x 600mm (D) and the next most common is 2.4m for either the L or H x 2m x 600mm (D).

I am putting the deal link to SkyTeck Online as they seem to be a bigger player with pickup warehouses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane & Perth. But you will find many other sellers on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree. SkyTeck online sell on their eBay and their website. Their website/ebay is terrible to find items and it's really hard to find the standard 2x2x0.6m or 2x2.4mx0.6m type shelving as they have so many strange configurations of multiple shelving units together. They don't seem to have a 2.4x2x0.6m one like some other sellers.

  • Have you tried the rack it ones from Bunnings? I'm in the market and was looking at them or super rack and pretty much in your standard sizing, thanks in advance

Yes I have tried the lighter duty rack it ones from Bunnings and they aren’t great. The metal bends too easily, especially if you are ever going to dissemble it and reassemble it. Others may say it’s ok, but they wouldn’t have compared it to the all metal marketplace/gumtree ones which last so much better.

    • I have a few of them, and I’m surprised they are considered “awful quality”. I have no complaints.
Pinnacle 1830 x 1820 x 540mm 4 Tier Heavy Duty Shelving Unit have a 4.8 star rating from 411 reviews, so I’m not on my own.

      • OP is talking about the MDF shelf ones per the other post. Metal shelf is fine.

        • +1

Yes I’m not talking about the one in your link (all metal) and it sounds fine from others but looking at the side posts of it, the metal posts look much thinner than the ones that I posted about.

The 1000kg rack it ones are great quality, cant comment on the lighter ones

      • +2

Agree - I bought a bunch of those for work store room and can't fault them.

    Correct. Not a bargain.

Its like posting a link as a "deal" of a full priced item at a "healthy" restaurant because someone posted a deal about KFC.

Shut up and take my money.

    • I don't care I love it

    Pinnacle shelves are awful quality?
They have a 4.8 rating from 411 reviews
Only 17 reviews are 3 stars or under.

Even the MDF ones have 4.1 rating from 366 reviews. But even then comparing steel shelves to MDF isn’t “apples with apples”.

I’ve never known them to be bad quality.

OP is talking about the MDF shelf ones per the other post. Metal shelf is fine.
They are both shelves - so Granny Smith Apples and Red Delicious Apples - but apples it is.

The reason the reviews on MDF are not so bad is they ask you for a review when they are new - I bought 6 lots with the MDF by the time I realised MDF was the spawn of the devil was many months later - went mouldy (Queensland), sagged, failed, hazardous mouldy dust on my stuff and in my house, had to wear a mask to dispose of them.
      MDF are absolute rubbish.

I now have some like OP has posted and some metal shelf Pinnacle that are fine.

    • I haven’t tried the heavy duty all metal Pinnacle one in your link above so it’s probably better.

But the MDF one in your link above is terrible compared to the all metal better quality ones. Apart from the MDF that deteriorates, the metal is so thin and bends especially if you have to move it or dissamble and reassemble.

If you had never tried the better quality ones, it would probably seem fine for light use especially given its price. But if you look at them in 5 years time, you will see a big difference.

    • Replying to you for the sake of it, but you're certainly not wrong.

Pinnacle are pretty flimsy if you leave them by themselves, but if you put them hard up against a wall, corner, or wall/other shelves they are fine.

Definitely not as good as proper racking, and yeah.. MDF isn't meant to be left outside (or even anywhere moist.. it really hates water).. but they aren't the worst things in the world.

Strong enough, cheap enough, accessible enough.
If you can bolt it to the wall, you're gonna be set for pretty much anything a normy could throw at it

    • I've just thrown out a bunch of Pinnacle shelves on the weekend. They lasted me several years and I'm pleased at the price since I don't currently need more shelves.

BUT, if I had paid a bit extra for the ones in this post, I'm sure I wouldn't have had to throw them out. So, in that respect, this does look like better value.

  • A quick google search and they can be found cheaper depending on your location.

  • Got some of this shelfing a bit ago. Mine had some rust out of the box, but assembly went alright. Not terribly impressed for the money, but does the job.

  • I have these and I some pinnicle (well the equivalent ones from Super Cheap Auto) as well.
The frame itself is much better on these, looks good too.
However I much prefer the MDF to the steel shelves, the steel shelves are just more flimsier, I'm not saying they cant hold the weight because they can,
but the shelves on these are just a bit of sheet metal and then on the bottom side is a ribbed section for strength (kind of like a colorbond fence). They have flex in them, they also are in 2 pieces across each shelf, not a biggy but would prefer they were in 1.
In the perfect world I would have these frames with MDF shelves.

  • Cheaper here, but Melbourne pickup only (or postage at extra cost): https://shelvingpro.com.au/collections/1-bay-longspan-shelvi…

I also liked these guys because they're one of the few suppliers they sell 500mm deep shelves (instead of 600mm), which actually worked better for my space.

Legend, close to my house too

Mrs has a great rack. Got it before we were married. Not sure about load rating.

    • +1

      got pics?

    • +1

I've heard she has lots of positive reviews

    • +1

Load rating changes, especially after 3 kids.

  • Anyone know of some cheaper racking that will attach to the Bunnings 400kg rack it? Would like to be able to use both together

  • I bought this shelving recently with different widths and can recommend. Excellent quality, pretty strong and sturdy, I remember doing a price comparison with the similar ones online, on facebook marketplace and bunnings etc, and these guys were the cheapest and luckily they had a warehouse close to where i live in WA.

  • I own a couple of sets of these and the Bunnings Pinnacle ones too. Horses for courses.

The Bunnings ones lived happily in the garden shed for years and were fine. MDF didn’t bow or give any issues, naturally it’s a lower load rating and you have to be mindful where you place the load - don’t put something really heavy in the middle of a board at the weakest point.

These metal ones are fine too, although I’m dubious as to the load rating - the 2M spans are bowing noticeably and I’m well under the supposed maximum load. The uprights are made of surprisingly thin sheet metal, but seem to do the job. I make an effort to put anything heavier towards the beams and uprights (not the middle of a platform) as I’m not convinced the platforms won’t just deform and fall through. 16 months in though and no issues to date.

Are you sure you have the metal one that I posted about and not the Bunnings all metal one? The metal one that I posted about has really chunky uprights which I doubt would dent if I banged it into a brick wall. The Bunnings uprights on the all metal version look a lot flimsier - I have had the cheaper Bunnings one and the uprights on those are very flimsy. They look the same in the picture, but the all metal Bunnings one may be better.

      • Yeah they’re not Bunnings. I got them from one of the “other sellers” you’ve alluded in your post - https://www.plusoutdoors.com.au/ (Melb). Based on pics, spec and price they appear identical. If you reckon your uprights are that tough then perhaps there is some variation between these various same-looking shelves. The uprights on mine are what I’d consider “just good enough”.

  • You can get free shipping from the FB marketplace links. In Brisbane it'll ship to most Gold Coast post codes. (according to the site)

  • Is there anyway to get free shipping in Melbourne metro?
