On sale is Beelink's take on an SSD NAS with 6 M.2 NVMe slots paired with an Intel N150 CPU, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 64GB eMMC storage. While others in this space (GMKtek) suffer from poor cooling this one has a fan blowing air through the whole chassis. An excellent choice for faster file storage, Plex/Jellyfin transcoding and Promox, as show here. A good review from Raid Owl can be found here.

Edit: Cheaper on this listing and if you stack with cashback (9% at Cashrewards) it's even cheaper than buying from Beelink directly.

Other features include dual 2.5G LAN (Intel i226-V ), WiFi 6 (Intel AX101), HDMI, USB-C 10Gbps, USB 3.2 10Gbps, USB 2.0 and it has an integrated 45W power supply with a figure 8 cable.

It's important to note that due to CPU limitations it's limited to PCIe 3.0 with one slot being x2 and the other five x1. Regardless you'll still get faster speeds than traditional HDD NAS drives.

Too bad the store doesn't meet feedback requirements to be posted :(

      • +2

ah well, been on a lookout for these to go cheaper, thanks anyway. Purchased for $176 USD through above link, hopefully it'll get delivered lol

    I dont need another toy.

    I DONT need another toy!

  • I would be interested in these, but how are SSDs for long term storage?

    • SSDs have shown to be very reliable, however cheap shit has entered the market in the last few years. As always, with any data storage, you must have a backup

  • +3

    $209 on beelink's website, free shipping: https://www.bee-link.com/products/beelink-me-mini-n150?varia…

    • No cashback, so you're paying more than this deal in the end. Buying direct from Beelink really takes the Bargain out of Oz.

    • With AU adapter also.

  • +2

I got one from the previous sale. Still yet to open it.

Just be aware that the power supply unit is a bit weak so if you're going to stuff it full with 6 SSDs, to get ones with lower power requirements (like the Crucial P3)

Been running TrueNAS for the past couple of months, and it's been solid.

  • "This coupon code is for single use only"

    • Try IFPKPQRV or IFPILB43

      • No, the original coupon works. I tried it on the alternative link and threw that error :) Thanks for the other codes. It comes to $342.70 for me.

  • What advantages does this have over plugging six hdds I have laying around into an old nuc and running plex on that?

    • More compact, less messy

    • USB is not reliable from what I have read.

  • Note that this only has 2.5Gb networking - for large movie files it won't really be any faster than a normal NAS with mechanical drives - you can just about get 250MB/s from a modern hard drive, enough to fill the network link.

If you're working with large numbers of tiny files then it will be noticeably quicker.

  • How come we don't see any of the ugreen NAS in Australia? Are these not for the oz region?

    • +4

A few others have been asking the same question on reddit.

My impression is that Ugreen NAS isn’t mature enough for a full global launch yet, as reflected in their EULA, which still reads like it was written for a domestic Chinese market. Don’t get me wrong, I rate them highly and like their products, but I can see why no distributor is keen to carry their NAS line locally. My guess is they’ll enter the ANZ market in the next 2 to 3 years, and by then their NAS offering will hopefully be on par with (or almost as good as) Synology DSM.

      • Thanks bro

Which one is faster, a used 5 year old Mac Mini M1 for $200 - $300 on Gumtree / Facebook or this N150?

    • Apple M1 is significantly better for compute power and still power-efficient. Really depends on your use case. If you need Windows or x86 compatibility then N150 is the way to go, otherwise go with Apple.

      Personally I use both.

    • +1

You can get better mini PCs for the price if compute is what you’re looking for. This only makes sense to get to use as a NAS.

  • +4

I'm a little confused - if you're spending enough to buy 6x NVMe drives, why are you skimping on the computer to run them? Every review I've seen of these tiny NAS setups either has issues with heat or not enough grunt to run them all at full speed, and the recommendation is always to consider a larger and more powerful computer with an external NAS.

Don't get me wrong, I've been wanting something like this for years, but I havent seen one I think can actually do the job.

    • I have this + TV AMD gaming PC

Why was it appealing vs using my AMD gaming PC with USB NAS?

      • Leave it on 24/7 with very low power consumption relative (but irrelevant if money is not a problem)
      • Efficient hardware decoding & encoding
      • It's cool and quiet that I don't notice it on
      • Mines about 3-4% with Jellyfin casting 4k to TV

I don't want Intel in my gaming PC, and AMD decoding/encoding kinda sucks still (please correct me if wrong)

Also means I can move my gaming PC to another room (e.g. sim racing) without affecting my partners ability to watch a show

YMMV of course but I'm stoked with this

    • I agree with you. I can’t see practicality in this with the processing power of N150 and non ECC memory and the bottleneck of 2.5G ethernet.

A normal HDD NAS makes more sense and performs probably similar, unless you have a very special use case that can benefit from small files read/write or IOPS of nvmes.

    • @Nukkels what do you mean "run them at full speed" ?

Even if this machine had a 10Gb ethernet connection, you would only get 1000MB/s from it - nowhere near the speed of a single modern NVMe drive.

You'd need 40Gb networking to keep up with even the most basic modern drives.

Network access to NVMe drives "at full speed" is not a thing in a home network.

      • I'm talking about the PCI-E lanes which is directly linked to the CPU.

Check out this review of a few similar options that suffer from these issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VBnxEQKG3o

        • -1

It doesn't matter how many PCIe lanes you give the drives, as long as there are enough to keep up with the network connection.

It's the network speed that defines how quickly you can get data in and out of the NAS - giving the drives more PCIe lanes to make them faster than the network link, does absolutely nothing for performance.

          • @Nom: Giving them enough PCIe lanes to actually achieve the maximum speed of the network absolutely does help performance.

The N150 has 9 PCIe lanes, which are only PCIe 3.0, offering 1GB/s each (a total of 9GB/s). Note that the network itself uses up one of these lanes (1GBps =~10 Gbps, so enough for the 2.5Gbps ethernet). NVMe SSDs will use 4x lanes each by default, so if you have more than 2 SSDs, you need to manually configure them to 2x, reducing their throughput to only 2GBps, which is less than the network. If you have more than 4 and they're in RAID, they'll all be set to 1GBps each.

    • This one specifically doesn't have abysmal cooling unlike most other products in this category, been running one for a little while now with no issues. I just want a small and quiet smb file server, this does the job perfectly and is quite cheap compared to the TerraMaster F8 SSD Plus. I'm even considering getting another one as a general purpose mini pc to host docker containers at some point.

  • Does this Intel chip have QuickSync?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Would purchasing the 2tb version be cost effective as it is priced competitively than to source one yourself? Looks like it comes with a crucial p3 2tb.

    • For the boot drive any random $20 256GB OEM drive from ebay should be sufficient, assuming you're planning to add more drives for storage. Don't use the P3 or P3 Plus for a NAS, the endurance rating is pretty poor compared to other similarly priced HMB drives.

  • Unless I'm doing something wrong, it looks like I'm too late to this party (which is fair enough). US$295.90 with none of the codes working.
