Using Kayo Overseas - Anyone Have a Proven Method That Works?

I have a poorly timed overseas trip this week so am hoping to find a way to use Kayo overseas to watch the AFL.

I know the obvious answer is use a VPN but last time I tried that it still didn’t work.

So anyone got some suggestions on how I can access Kayo overseas? One that has been tried recently and is confirmed as working.

Tailscale. Exit node at your house.

    • This works great. You can even setup an Apple TV as an exit node now if you need 24/7 access. Or a Raspberry Pi or just your normal PC if you don’t mind the running costs.

I live in NZ and Australia and use this to seamlessly switch between geolocations, mostly for streaming and also for local network access. It’s been 100% reliable and was very easy to setup on all my devices.

      • OK I will have to check this out. Thanks

    • Tailscale. Exit node at your house.

Do you need a fixed IP for this?

      • nope

I just returned from New Zealand, where I used Kayo for two weeks while connected to SurfShark VPN with Melbourne/Sydney servers.
    No problems at all

    • Great, thank you. I will look into it.

This only works overseas - https://www.watchafl.com.au/

Only need it for a short trip?

A weekly or monthly subscription will be best for you. These subscriptions will automatically renew until you cancel your subscription, which you can easily do online.

If kayo doesn't work, you can always try 7plus. Yes, it has ads, but might be more VPN friendly.

When I'm overseas, I use a Wireguard on my home router. As far as Kayo is concerned, I'm still at home, and don't need to hope a VPN might or might not work.

    • Yeah I had a look at this briefly and not sure I understand how to set this up. I will need to do some more reading I guess

    • This is an excellent point especially if you are planning to watch the Grand Final which historically is (and I'm pretty confident will continue to be) exclusively on Seven.

  • I was in Vietnam earlier in the year and the Kayo app wouldn't work even behind my home VPN but it worked fine using a browser (edge).

    • With the browser, you were still using the home VPN right?

      • Yes

facetime a mate who is watching it and show ya

    • I laughed at this comment, but if I get desperate then maybe this will be the way to go.

  • works for me when accessed via browser with Nord

NordVPN worked for me on a few overseas trips. YMMV though.

    • Same. Nord (may require one or two different cities in Aus) worked a treat for all streaming services back in Aus.

      • OK thanks. I'm pretty sure Nord didn't work last time but I will try it again and see what happens

  • Fire stick unlocked. Thank me later

    • Hmm, now that's interesting. I do have a Firestick but haven't used it for a while…so just plug and play and I should be good to go?

      • They're likely referring to IPTV. You could take your firestick over with Kayo and utilise any of these VPN suggestions.

As for greyarea IPTV, the best practice is to use a VPN.

    But it’s expensive.
Used to work with Netflix but haven’t used it for couple years

  • I used NORD VPN set to Australia server in Bali. Worked fine.

    • server in Bali.

      Ketut ?

      • You need to set the server in Australia, so it thinks you are in Australia.

to use Kayo overseas to watch the AFL.

In the past, they did not broadcast the grand final live. You had to watch on channel 7.

    • They still won't be doing the Grand Final

      • 😢

  • I was told same, but have just been in Philipines and now Vietnam, use Nord VPN and Kayo works perfectly, obviously depending on good internet connection

  • On the other hand l use to watch SBS on demand overseas for cycling races etc, but they have now blocked VPN, so no access. Sportsbet app also blocked now, but can access if you login through website, if you like a bet on football etc. FYI.

  • Recently in Vietnam used my standard NordVpn account, worked with absolutely no issues for multiple matches.

I suspect if you do run into an issue, just keep trying different servers until it works.

  • I am currently overseas and have been able to access Kayo and watch the last 3 F1 races via Surfshark.

  • Does it make a difference if you use overseas hotel wifi?

    • If your hotel has one of those weird access portals it might? Haven't stayed at a place with one of those for a long time, are they still a thing with the big chains? VPN should still probably work though.
