Graco Magnum X5 Airless Paint Sprayer with Accessories: $799 (Was $1092.30) Delivered ($0 VIC/QLD C&C) @ Phillro Industries

70

Includes a 38cm Extension & TRU313 Spray Tip ($156 RRP). Couple of other stores are running price promotions (eg tradegear is $819 + delivery), but without the bonus accessories. The accessories are great (a finer spray tip for more finesse and an extension).

This is a pretty serious US-made airless paint sprayer, in between very high end DIY and professional grade. I have one and it is awesome. A little more finicky to set up than the cheap all in one spray guns. But I have owned both and this works at least 3x faster, is much more durable, and although harder to set up, it also doesn't jam up (if it does clog it is very easily fixed). 100% worth the extra cost for anything more than say a 15m wide fence.

I'm not convinced airless is quicker than a traditional roller and brush for interior work and I've done both quite extensively.

The amount of masking and covering required before you start is extremely time consuming. Cleanup is also time consuming because you have to do it properly. No sacrificing a $10 roller because you CBF.

    Pros:
    Perfect for new builds
    Perfect for outdoor tasks
The finish is really nice and flat.

No arguments from me there. I agree - best outdoors or for a new build

  • Ive got to paint the whole inside and outside of my house sometime soon.

My experience in painting is limited to 1 interior room with rollers 5 years ago.

Would anyone recommend this for a beginner?

Roller & brush if this is a one time thing

Depends how much you value your time really, but I'd personally do both (spray outside, roller inside - unless easy to tape up). Remember you can likely sell this on FB after as well so should cost you less than $800 net.

    • I've had a go as an amateur airless sprayer at tackling a whole large room that had some furniture left in it and like everything they make it look easy on youtube (after their years of practice).

While an airless does give an unmatched beautiful finish, you have to be careful on ceilings not to leave any banding which shows up once the window or ceiling lights hit it.
I think the pros back-roller their spray work anyway to get a uniform finish which kinda defeats using an airless if you're after an ultra smooth finish.

Yes, you can cover areas very quickly and you'll get through a ton of paint as well, and once you start spraying you can't really stop for anything and it's a bit "panic-stations" with all the noise and paint shooting everywhere, manoeuvring around furniture whilst still trying to keep the nozzle in a straight line on the ceiling.

If you get a few blobs from the nozzle go on the the wall (because of your crap technique) it's very annoying, and because I wasn't back-rollering as I preferred the spray finish I ended up spraying one wall 3 times until I was happy with it.

I'd say have a go- use very matt paint on your ceilings, get some different sized extensions rods for the gun so you the right distant from what your spraying and back-roll after spraying as I think you'll be happier with the overall finish (I wish I had in hindsight).

  • I'm actually in the market for a paint sprayer, I'm looking at doing a large concrete wall (1.8 x 20m) and my roof (tiled), as such I'm looking for something to spray a latex paint - will this work well for me? Or is it going to struggle/clog?
    Thanks

Yep it will be fine for that, should be fine undiluted straight from the bucket. When I've used that, mine has clogged a couple of times, but it takes 5 seconds to fix (spin the spray tip around to 'unclog', spray a small burst either into a bucket or on the wall if you want to brush it out, and spin the tip back around again).

  • Tempted. Can anyone here share their experience using something like this for (re)staining outdoor hardwood decking? I normally use an applicator and I am wondering if this is better overall in terms of speed and application coverage.

  • Thanks op. Was tossing up between this and Wagner 250m (also currently on sale at TKD). Ended up going with this. Hope I made the right decision.
