Amazon International Import Fees

Anyone noticed Amazon is now oddly charging above GST (10%) for imports? No explanation or breakdown as to why.

Noticed it mostly on HDDs, which only have GST for import from other sellers. Not sure what import fees they claim to be paying?

  • https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CF5XVHMS?smid=A3P6X2GIMA114Z $387.82 or $455.08 after fees (+15%, not 10%?)

$387.82 delivered on Prime. No extra fees.

      • Same. At the checkout it's telling me the $387.82 includes GST as well. Looks like OP is just paying for shipping.

      (+15%, not 10%?)

They're the new increased GST about to be announced by Albo.

They're not supposed to be in effect until 2026 though…

Got a link to confirm your allegations? The PM is actually saying the opposite at the moment.

Seems to be if it's >$1,000, it'll have GST included in advertised price then a random import fee on top.

    • "Where your AmazonGlobal or Amazon Global Store order has a combined value greater than AUD$1,000 or NZD$1,000 respectively but includes items that have a customs value less than AUD$1,000 or NZD$1,000 (i.e. low value imported goods) both GST and an Import Fee may apply to your order but you will only be charged for the GST once.

AmazonGlobal or Amazon Global Store orders which have a customs value less than AUD$1,000 or NZD$1,000 will not include an Import Fee, but will include AU GST or NZ GST as applicable."

Probably the Bezos Penis Rocket Tax

I'd say so, not aware of any changes to our import taxes. After testing it only appears over $1,000, before that GST is included in the price - so it's some random tariff ontop of GST. Around 15% for HDDs. It automatically let me around it by doing 2 orders arriving 1 day apart.

  • Maybe import duty which is typically around 5%. There's usually also a clearance fee for imports.

    • It's around 15%, as seems GST is included in original price

GST isn't included in the price for Amazon sites outside AU, it's added during checkout.

        • This was on Amazon AU, GST always included on Amazon AU even if shipped from elsewhere.

i have never paid anything for overseas delivery or taxes.

    try prime

    • Your paying GST as part of the total price on any import from Amazon

  • It is true that if you just buy one, you only pay $388.51 with free delivered. But if you buy 3 units, you pay $388.51x3+Import Charges $233.97 = $1163.93.

I'm guessing this $233.97 consists of 10% GST $105.95 + Government Charges $88 + Duty 5% $58.27 —> $40.02 = $233.97. It's most likely an error as GST is collected twice, one built into the original price.

Amazon massively increase the price of everything they sell into Australia via their overseas store. They say free delivery but it’s not.
Sometimes it’s still better to pay their price than buying it locally.

    • Blimey, how do they get away with it

  • Trum imposing a tariff on exports too now?

  • A simple google search (or having a clue about how the GST and duty works) would tell you the duty on hard drives typically involves the following:
Customs Duty: For goods valued above AUD$1,000, a standard rate of 5% of the Free on Board (FOB) value applies.
For goods valued under $1000 duty is normally not collected.
