This game is an open world survival game and still in early access. Not ATL but still 50% off

Not to mention the devs continually updating the game. It's a gem and well worth it at this price.
This has to be a dark joke. It's been early access for longer than star citizen, and thats only slightly hyperbolic. The update pace has been absolutely glacial. They only just announced they were fixing not being able to hit enemies above or below you on a slope, and it's coming up on its 5th birthday. From a studio that's made hundreds of millions of dollars off it already.
I can list like 10 games that started later and added more, and that in the proto-indie category alone.
Last year, this is how I spent my October - It's a great game, even in its current early access state.
The final major update "Deep North" is on the way, though don't expect that until at least the end of the year, if not sometime next year. These devs deliver, but they're slow.
Extra note: If getting your friend group together at the same time is like herding cats, just know this game is entirely playable solo.
I usually love this genre of game (particularly in coop) having put many hundreds of hours into games such as The Forest, Grounded, Subnautica, Return to Moria, DayZ, NMS and more - but I just couldn't get into Valheim even after 10+ hours of coop with my gf.
I found the combat to be particularly poor with floaty weapons that never feel right, performance wasn't great despite looking like a 15+ year old game and the grind to take particularly long with basic items taking a long time and effort to unlock.
The boss fights were kind of cool but because of the terrible combat mechanics I didn't even enjoy it.
LoTR Moria was much more fun and a better use of the money.
Agreed. I found that Valheim gives off a good first impression, starting up a new world with friends or a partner is always fun but it seems the deeper you go into the game it starts to lose its shine very quickly. The early game survival mechanics like exploration / gathering / crafting / building are done very well compared to similar games and when you build your first boat and sail away it's a great feeling.
Although when the boring, buggy combat starts to get more demanding and the crafting requires more and more rare resources from places that are tedious to get to and fight through, the strong early game mechanics weren't enough to make me want to get further towards the end game.
I picked it up a while back for this price, I enjoyed my time and got my value from it but it's not one that I would go back to.
Strong agree with both. In my opinion the difficulty ramping is all over the place and makes the game progression such a grind that each time I tried I stopped having fun quickly and gave up.
Currently playing Enshrouded - in my opinion, a much better game.
I forgot to mention the difficulty being all over the place and yeah that's definitely another criticism I have.
Enshrouded looks great but I was going to wait for full release before purchase/play as it seems they are still adding items, mechanics and story elements?
Just in case you weren't aware Subnatica Below Zero has had a multiplayer/coop mod that is much better than the original Nitrox and should definitely check out if you enjoy these types of games with friends: https://subnauticamultiplayer.com/
@studentl0an: I got Enshrouded at a recent sale and at ~$35 is unbelievable value. Game quests can be a little repetitive (go here and find this) but skill tree is deep, different classes feel different, building is unbelievably good. My only major criticism is the progression can be either awesome or awful depending on how you play with mates.
But what's most impressive is how responsive the devs are. They are constantly adding content, adding fixes / balances, adding community suggestions.
Good shout on Below Zero, we never tried the Nitrox because they only supported an ancient version of the game.
@kingfizz: It sounds and looks great but it looks like they are still adding important story elements? I may buy it next time it hits ATL but I'd rather not play it until the story is finalised, and would more likely purchase after that.
Nitrox works OK now using Steam legacy version but has quite a few sync issues and it requires a bit of tinkering to get working.
The Below Zero multiplayer mod is seamless, bug free and polished. It's like the game was meant to come out like that. It hypes me up for Subnatica 2 having coop out the gate.
Fun game, but the updates trickle out at a snails pace.
I stopped prior to Mistlands and have been waiting until full release to jump back in.
Well worth the price for the amount of content, but it does get lonely solo
i would wager it better to get into it when its early access as you get to play what is here then you play again every update
if you buy it once its finished you will most likely get a lot of less time in the game
Oh definitely buy it at this price, I'm saying that in my case that I'm going to wait until full release to play anymore.
I remember in previous updates that new biomes wouldn't be added to already explored areas on existing worlds or required a new map, and I explored a lot of space/sunk a lot of time in to just restart
Excellent game - highly recommend using mods, and a server set up if playing multiplayer!
I'm just waiting for release now until I go back. One day…
Have a feeling it will be in this 'pre release' mode until they introduce a PVP element i.e. monthly wipes of maps on dedicated servers, which is basically the only way to get it to leap to the next level ala Rust.
Until then, it will remain the way it is now i.e. a fun but limited game.
I don't think it will ever go to that - it's not really the game type.
More that they will create the zones they want until they decide that they want some more cash by going into 1.0 release haha
For me, this is just my building simulator. I need to install Enshrouded too since I've been told the building aspect is better on that game, but I've loved building stuff in Valheim. It's so relaxing.
Enshrouded is great for building! I love that you can just dig out areas and use them as part of your base. Also can make hidden areas - I made a base with friends and made a hidden trapdoor under some rugs and digging out the floor, where it took them ages to find it, until someone got out their pickaxe and partly destroyed the base to find it….
Oooh thanks for confirming! I'll install tonight and check it out!
How is this still early access lol
TL;DR
Hmm, I just figured the moved on to their next game.
Valheim has made 90% of the money it ever will.
Nope. They arent slow because they care. They're slow because they're just not good at developing games. All of the criticism of their absolutely glacial pace is completely justified. There are still critical bugs in the game that were there on day one. Now they've made a trailer memeing finally fixing some of them but still haven't dropped said fixes.
They hit on a gold formula but haven't managed to execute since. Every single game of this type has faced the same challenges, has the same creative demands, same creative pipelines. Almost every single one has executed faster, bigger, and less buggy.
They refused to grow the team yet aren't able to handle the complexity and scope they've grown the game to.
Taking hundreds of millions in early access and still having failed to execute, near 5 years later, is just pure denial, incompetence, and arrogance.
Definitely recommend this game. I still haven’t finished it because every time I hit the silver ore stage, I end up just sailing around nonstop, then take a break and restart months later. I could keep going from where I left off, but the early game with its building physics and combat is just too much fun.
