case study into proprietary connectors and e-waste

    • Amen. Though still a lot of pre-M1-gen MacBook still around on FB Marketplace

Magsafe was a very innovative solution early on. Arguably Microsoft led the barrel jack laptops, that was e-waste.

It was the same with lightning vs micro usb

      • +1

Yup. The hate on lightning was deserved, but it was hated due to Apple's MFi program, which made it prohibitively expensive.

Hardware-wise, it was far more durable than MicroUSB.

    • Can cut off plug/ change it. Get adapters from AliExpress for not much…edit - just looked…$6 if you want to make this an 85w USB C (might be one of the cheapest ever).

I think the magsafe is a good design…but get your point.

Maybe a base of USB C, and then adapt to magsafe would be better….but it does mean USB C gets all royalties/ becomes monopolistic…and a USB plug becomes $235.

So…grab a $6 adapter and keep on truckin..

      • link please..
my google-fu is low today, all I can find is USB C to magsafe

        • On my phone at the moment. Looks like Temu have them, not Ali. Sending Temu links are a nightmare. I'll jump on my PC later and send them.
*Ali probably have them as well..just Temu came up straight away. I assume you want magsafe 2 to USB-C male?

I like MagSafe. The little LED on it alone makes it worth it. Snapping it on instead of plugging it in, yanking it off. That's truly living compared to steadily lining up a USB C and sliding it in, like you're carefully turning the keys on launching a nuclear missile every single time.

I'm still running my music stuff off an ancient 2014 MBP, a couple of these will definitely come in handy. Cheers!

  • I have a couple of older macbooks that are still very serviceable with opencore legacy patcher.
I like the old 11inch form factor of the MacBook airs and the MacBook pro from circa 2012 with i7 but normal Simms and ssds is still fine for office tasks.

    • Yeah I have a MacBook Air 11” bought in 2013 and I love it. Perfect size screen but they don’t do that anymore, minimum is 13”

    and it's gone

  • how many people got one?

    • Ordered one using my 2015 retina. Thanks op.

      • Oh wonder what’s your use case?
I also have a spare one, but just stopped using it when it became jerky while connecting to a 4K monitor.. like 5 years ago ?

I should have sold this earlier 🙈

  • "This product is no longer available". Ah well.

  • So I suppose we all have ancient MBP's?

    • The thing is, even the ancient MBPs are fit for light use/as a spare. I cannot say the same about Windows laptop, even the high-end ones that cost as much as an MBP never lasted as long for me.
I paid $10 for a USB C to MagSafe cable when my charger finally gave in, that generic cable charges fine but not sturdy enough to be trusted if there is need to charge it on the go regularly.
$24 is cheaper than some of the generic ones I had seen on Amazon.
