279

Just announced at last night's Nintendo Direct and already available for pre-order.

Announcement Video

I understand some may not like thst this is RRP, but this feels like it will be by far the cheapest way to experience Virtual Boy games in 2025

Some notes:

  • Limit of 1 per customer
  • NSO + Expansion Pack required to play virtual boy game
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2
  • I think it's likely there's be plenty of cheap knock off cardboard setups you can buy to achieve the same results (just like when Google cardboard released). So if these prices are too high, I think there's a good chance you can wait and get a cheap setup.

Did you read the title of the website?

      • +13

I understand that you understand but that does not change my thoughts on posting RRP items on a bargain website.

        • Fair enough. I've seen these sort of posts get some traction in the past, so I thought I'd share. But if the community is over it, I won't again next time.

    • +3

Wait for a $10 Temu knock off :p

  • +4

Basically anything will emulate the Virtual Boy. If for some reason you want 3D just mod an old 3DS and run the games on it.

  • +3

Expect the novelty of the old VB games wont last long, needs to add a modern remake (colour!) or port some other games over too?

    • Colour remakes would be a win.

    • +2

      $30 is the cardboard

      • +1

        It’s still a rip.

  • +4

We should be promoting Nintendo's money grabs.

  • +7

Who in their right mind would pay so much for a small handful of games? Such a rip off. I would understand if there was like more than 50 games for this thing but there isn't.

    • +2

Me. I bought it within hours of the announcement. I've been wanting a Virtual Boy to play Wario Land (and maybe Mario Tennis) on it (via authentic original hardware) for over a decade, but I couldn't justify the cost. It's a very niche piece of gaming history. To have something that's functional, supported, and reproductive at a mere fraction of the alternative (i.e. the Switch version vs. the original hardware via ebay) is, in my opinion, a bargain, as these things will be way above RRP after they're sold out. It is, by far, the most accessible (legal) way to experience and own this piece of Virtual Boy memorabilia.

  • +7

I think the best way to play Virtual Boy games is on a modded 3DS with the 3D. it looks real good there and no need for all this silly headwear.

  • +9

This has got to be one of the most bizarre moves by Nintendo. The virtual boy was a total flop! Who was asking for this!! To add to this there are only 22 (8 of these are jap so might not see them) games in total which they are gonna drop fees

Well done Nintendo, I love you very much but I can't support this sort of behaviour :p

This is a L in my books

I won't be shocked if Nintendo goes the way of Sega soon. How many people purchased a Switch 2? Is it going to be enough to carry them thru to the next generation of consoles? These random physical releases seem like a helpless cash grab.

      • +6

About a million units a week for the first 6 weeks I believe. Most likely sold in the first 2 months more than half the number of Wii Us they sold in 5 years.

        • +3

And it's worth noting they had the money to keep themselves afloat through that entire console's life too. Somehow, I think the multimillion dollar corpo will be fine.

      • +1

        LOL

They're a rip off but you're far far far from anything resembling being correct.

      • You've been living under a rock these past 7 years if you even remotely believe what you just typed.
        Its laughable at least.

      • +1

Nintendo has been around for 130+ years, the Switch 2 has been very successful. Plus, nostalgia alone will keep them going for years to come I'm sure.

      • @ChasesBargains - Your princess is in another castle dood..

NS2 is the fastest selling launch console ever. 5-million units in the first month. Outstripping the OG switch and the PS5.

        Admit defeat Bowser.

  • Thanks op, just pre ordered both for my collection of original switch hardware

  • +2

I like the novelty. I like the cheaper variant being offered too, even if 30 for cardboard sounds ridiculous (to be fair, I loved the cardboard VR Labo thing and it cost a lot more). But…

The games are (profanity) ugly and low res old balls anyway…why can't I just play it on my big shiny HDMI box without shoving my face literally into Mario's ass? Would it have really been that horrible to just let people play the game on the tele. THAT would have been something new actually, since the OG hardware obviously never had the option.

  • +5

So I need a membership to then pay RRP - have you forgotten this is ozbargain

  • +3

While this is just RRP, I’m still super keen for this. People forget that you can play Breath of the Wild in VR, Mario Odyssey has some VR content, and in the Labo VR game you can make your own Switch VR content, so the use for this goes beyond just the Virtual Boy games if you’re into that sort of thing.

    • +2

It also opens up the potential for ports of 3DS games that utilise 3D (or at least the ones that don't rely on touch controls).

      • That went really well for Sony and the Playstation VR.

  • +1

This is a nice pr stunt by them, losing few millions to get people talking about the brand by making fun of this product..

  • +3

Nintendo greed: hiding money grabs behind a money grab paywall. Hard pass.

  • +3

RRP, not a bargain. But also, for anyone actually planning on getting this, from memory, the only notable games (as in relatively unique) are Wario Land and Jack Bros. Nintendo will never have a sale that would make this worth getting imo.

  • +4

It's rare to see a preorder as a deal.
As for the addon, if you own a Meta Quest, you can already play virtually all existing Virtual Boy games in emulators.

  • +1

    Use cardboard box, same shit

  • +1

Anyone has STI file for it?

    • +2

I think you have to talk to your doctor for those.

I understand some may not like thst this is RRP, but this feels like it will be by far the cheapest way to experience Virtual Boy games in 2025

The cheapest and better way to experience Virtual Boy games in 2025 is to go find any VR headset, and use a Virtual Boy emulator to play.

  • +2

Lmao the audacity from Nintendo after their recent bullshit with patents too

  • I still have my Virtual Boy (which I was lucky enough to get in the US for only US$29.99 in 1996!) But still plan to get this!

    • +1

      What a great investment haha.

  • +1

    Sorry bit confused

For $140 you get this virtual boy accessory that states this? -

This accessory is primarily made of cardboard and additional foam padding.

    Am I reading that correctly???

    • +1

      Wrong description on the product.

      • +1

        Ahhh that’s good to know

        • lol I just bought some Twisties today :P
