I bought almost the same one, but without red pain in Aldi for about $10. Good thing, but heavy. Not sure what brand.

    • It could be Crofton, Aldi's homebrand. They are dirt cheap but with decent quality.

    RRP? Don't be gullible.
10 cents worth of cast iron.
Actually, these are not even proper cast iron. They are enameled, for nubes who can't be bothered to learn how to care for cast iron *.
Normal market price for an enamelled grill like this is maybe $50. A lot less if you go hunting.

    • disclaimer: I used an enameled grill, because I'm lazy.

IMO I'd be careful due to the amount of heavy metals found in some enamelled cookwear. There was talk of it happening in enamelled pans out of China a while back.

Any old enamelled stuff should be binned and never used, who knows what's in it.

      • But the enamel isn’t on the cooking surface, so how can it harm you?

        • +1

Not the case. The enamel is a glass-like coating on the metal, including cooking surface.
It means you don't need to "season" the pan with polymerised oils to get a non-stick finish. And you can cook acidic foods like tomatoes, without getting metal oxides in your food.

Heavy metals are not necessarily a problem. It is common for example to have lead added to glassware. The enamel is non-porous, and should not be reactive, like raw cast iron is.

I saw the "American" moniker and double checked, it's french made and owned. No need to boycott.

    • -3

Because the French never did anything bad.

      OzBargain.

Come for the bargains, stay for the (profanity) politics.

      • Give anyone thy chance to do something bad, they'll do it. Some countries do seem more inclined, but they all do it. Even in aus, just thankfully our pollies, and voters (for now) are marginally better.

  • is this a non stick pan

    • Yep.

Make sure you read and learn how to maintain the non stick property !

      • +2

It is not non-stick in that teflon kind of way. Enamelled cast-iron is a less sticky and kind of easy to clean surface, trade off being it doesn't brown as well as regular cast iron (but better than non-stick).

But I'm not a fan of this type of pan. Grill marks are for show and cleaning in between the griddles is a pain. A flat enamelled cast iron/regular cast iron pan does the same and more.

For background- I own Le Creuset cast iron cookware from gumtree and sold this exact pan.

    • most of them are probably cheaper on amazon, i got the santoku for $66.

      • +1

Amazon does have really good knife sales

  • +2

    Grill marks = decoration.

Does nothing for flavour, and you could argue it's worse because if you're cooking a steak you want an even golden crust on both sides.

    • +1

This is true - but when you cook a steak on one of these, you do still get an even crust on both sides.

The pan should be so hot that you still get a complete "grill" in between the actual "grills" - and the grill lines move each time you turn the steak anyway.

      • +1

Heathen! Only turn the steak once.

        • +1

Not in a pan, every 30 seconds for me.

Got one from Aldi a few years back. $10.

    • Got very similar red one on clearance @Aldi for $7. Used it again tonight. Very happy with it.

  • Looks similar to the $20 ALDI one

  • -4

Ah yes we are back into the coated cast iron grift. 140 is just what it's worth as a top brand. Not a bargain.

  • Yeah forget the price, forget the RRP, if you’re on OzBargain to save money you don’t want this. You want a $20 one from Aldi.

  • The smallW shop has way better value for the same cast iron enamel equivalent. Not bargain posted IMHO.

  • Get a Lodge instead.

  • -1

    Yep get the aldi one.

  • Cleaning this type of pan is a pita and not worth the aesthetic grill lines.

    • Use a scraper (Lodge or generic copy) designed to fit the ridges. Makes cleaning my $7 Aldi version easy.
