Anyone know how to get taobao back in english? It was english when I installed it but now it's in Chinese. Already tried all language settings in app, I didn't change any setting either. It's just reverted to chinese. Hard to shop in a different language 😂

    • Reinstalling was the only solution that worked last time but haven't had used it in about 6 months.

Also you can always just open it chrome and translate the page, doesn't quite work as well but you get the hang of it

      • Yeah tried reinstalling to no avail.

        Screen translation it is, thanks!

        • you probably changed your region on the app, if you change it to Australia it will flip back to english but remember if you switch to Australia you will have a small amount of listings on taobao.

          • @revnout: Nah I had my colleague who speaks and reads mandrin to try for me and it was definitely all set to Australia.

            • @drinkin-beer: when you set it to Australia, then in the language section English becomes a select able option, and in the currency section AUD becomes an option.

              • @revnout: Not in my case unfortunately. I found a pretty handy screen translate app that works quite well. Selecting the location of Australia only results in Chinese language being available. Screenshot below.

FYI this also works on the desktop version. I just have my browser auto-translate from Chinese to English.

Have used it twice now and shipping / the collection process was pretty quick and easy!

  • Does free shipping included everything or only selected categories like clothing?

    • only very limited categories

      Much better than temu

      • but this free shipping to Australia is very pricy. something I bought is about 4 times higher than temu after cashback

        • +2

It's not, it's 100% free if you purchase the correctly advertised products. Product quality is 1000 times better than temu as well.

          • @Elision: but the free shipping one is not the normal Taobao. only very limited seller. normally un-brand items. how is it 1000 times better than temu? Have you used the free shipping? I have already placed more than 10 orders so far

    • I found it cheaper than Aliexpress. Especially for shipping prices, though shipping is slower if you go for the cheapest option (most of my purchases take roughly 4 weeks), and I luckily have one of their collection locations nearby.

For example, I recently purchased some very heavy telescope (10-15kg box) equipment from Taobao, it was double the price both locally and through Aliexpress. In fact it was more expensive through Aliexpress due to the extreme shipping costs. Saved a huge amount of money going through Taobao. Everything arrived perfectly.

I also found the merchants to be surprisingly friendly. They often contact you to double check your purchase to make sure you havent made any mistakes and they go out of their way with answering questions. Can be amusing communicating through Google Translate.

I have just about stopped using Aliexpress and Temu now and use Taobao for all my Chinese purchases.

  • What do you guys buy on Taobao that's cheaper than AliExpress?

    • +2

I gave up searching, the interface and Engrish is too horrible lmao

    • Taobao and t-mall are usually popular with cosplayers and anime & figurine collectors. Plenty of really nice dresses, costumes, and whatnot. I know several cosplayers buying all their outfits from taobao. You can also get bundles like these that aren't normally available in Australia

    • For me, mainly clothing. There are good items on AliExpress too, but more variety and in general on Taobao it's cheaper for the quality of articles. There is also a lot of grey market on Taobao if you know what to look for (where people buy and resell the slightly imperfect or excess stock from factories that sell branded clothing, or clothing made from the high end material of branded clothing) I was able to buy authentic Forever New tops for $10 which cost $60 new in store, 100% authentic because I own the real one and compared them.

I'm finding shipping is also quicker with Taobao.

      • I've found this too. It was over 5 years ago now, but I bought a Sony MUC-M2BT1 which at the time was something like $500 EDIT: $300. I got it for $150 including shipping IIRC. And it was legit

Taobao is really for insane deals or great quality stuff that you can't find anywhere else, Temu and AliExpress included

      • any stores you recommend?

    • Telescope and astrophotography equipment for myself. Much cheaper through Taobao.

  • wait they ship direct now?

    • I used to buy a bit via their consolidation warehouse but after covid the prices got crazy… agents were better to use. If they can ship direct that'd be kinda nice

  • It's only on selected products and it's for 'click and collect only'.

Taobao's click and collect feature is to send it to nearby participating shops.

The funny thing is if you have it set to Chinese you can take your pick with reps. Set it to English and they all disappear 🫥

    • because only very limited item offers free shipping to Australia.

      • is there a way to filter? for which does free del? if use the built in free shipping doesnt seem to apply even when my default add is set to my AU address.

    • +1

Agreed. I found going through the desktop website far better than the App because 90% of listings just disappear.

Though there is no English option on the desktop, so you will need to use Google Translate a lot.

      • this is due to the region, your app is most likely has Australia as the region.

  • Any good child car seats on there?

      Just don't

      • Depends how much you love your kid.

Can't be any worse than what is currently available in Australia which is very few ancient options that are lacking many simple modern and useful features like Isofix, better side impact support, 360 rotation, ventilated / heated seat, multi purpose convertible from 0 to 7 or 12 years.

Passing and meeting all the European safety standards testing certifications ECE R129/i-Size or China's 3C certification can't be that bad or I mean it is far worse getting a vehicle with zero ANCAP rating ?

          I might be wrong lol

          • @4to: If you are lucky couple of Taobao shopping masters experts with experience might be of assistance helping you otherwise you`ll only receive weirdo replies comments from keyboard warriors :)
