A friend linked me to this page, so thought I would try offer some info for future buyers.

This is a known seller of "non-clone" R36S, which is great and should avoid headaches when trying out new things on it. The SD card it comes with is junk, and you should plan on getting a new one asap - these boot from the sd card, and when it starts to fail you will start having issues ranging from certain games no longer working, saves randomly missing, and the big one being the system hanging on a black screen when you power it on.

    Things worth knowing before buying:

This handles mainstream 8 and 16 bit systems perfectly, even with shaders and overlays (gameboy, nes, snes, megadrive, mastersystem, etc). PS1 is pretty great, and i would say "near perfect". PSP, N64 and Dreamcast are all spotty - some games work fine, with others being completely unplayable. NDS is hit and miss too. Theres a great compatibility list on the R36S wiki (not sure if links are allowed here, but top result on google should find it) that tests and details performance of higher end systems like N64 and PSP. DOS games work pretty great on it too, and theres a heap of ports available over on portmaster that range from perfectly playable to unplayable.

This CANNOT play wii, ps2, ps3, 3ds, switch, gamecube, etc

As for OS options, theres a bunch available. Most people are going to find ArkOS (a fresh install) good enough, but theres also an Armbian build for it which basically turns it into a mini PC. An android build was recently made available and its pretty good all things considered (performance of a $30 zte woolies phone from 2020)

Lots of resources available for these cheap handhelds too - R36S subreddit and wiki are the main ones, but theres also a bunch of guides on youtube if thats more your thing

Edit: forgot to mention, theres a heap of different screens that are used in these, and that slightly complicates things when doing a fresh install of the OS. Visually they are all pretty much the same, but you may need to change some files around when doing a fresh install. Panel 4 seems to be the most common, and most OS' use that as the default, so theres a good chance everything will work perfectly out of the box on your first try when installing a new OS

  • Is this able to run lower-end Steam games?

only if they have been ported over to portmaster - theres currently 1157 ports available, most notably half life, morrowind and grand theft auto 3\vc

edit: looks like links are allowed here - https://portmaster.games/games.html

  • already had an account but created a new account for this and bought. it worked fine even though i used all same details as my existing acc (except email)

  • Received an email with cancellation

Your order 820535687XXXXXX has been closed for security reasons.

    • Do you have other accounts with same address or credit card number? Did you try to get it as introductory price, with new account?

      • yes, i have a couple more accs with the same address.

Created a new acc, the price was about $19, received a confirmation email for the order.
A couple of hours later received a refund and cancellation email

        • and the same for the second order under the new account

  • Mine came out to $15.38 AUD delivered, no idea why, I didn't put in any other codes or anything, just a new account.

    • Mine too but then it added taxes

I've had one of these for a while, $18 is so cheap it's hard to give a reason not to get one if you want. You can use a community OS, and play a ton of consoles.

And yeah I've upgraded since getting this but i reckon it was still very worth it as that litmus test if you actually like handhelds.

  • Thanks OP, I've wanted to try one of these for a while

Man… Just picked mine up to see what version, lost an hour of my life !

I just picked mine up and turned it on while at work. The volume was set to 100% so it started blasting some loud music. Now everyone knows I'm not doing actual work. Gonna leave a negative review now.

Did that on the train recently, but I had my wired headphones plugged in, and noise-cancelling turned on.

Or, I thought they were plugged in, but they weren't properly…

Noticed I was getting a few stares, thought it was cause I was the cool old bloke playin me retro on the railz..

But no, it was cause I was blasting Ghost n Goblins loudly throughout the 8am commute on the Franga line…

    Hi all
I received mine however it’s the v22 board which seems to be a new revision? You can install ArkOS but you’ll lose OTG. You can see the revision by loooing on the board under the battery.
Other than that it seems fine.

    • Mine arrived in the mail today but haven't had a chance to get home from work and open it yet

    • not sure if you will see this, but I did the same thing. I installed the ArkOS community build.

Do you know if i get another blank sd card and just install the base OS, can I simply plug that in and be good to go again - I need the OTG to get the internet going so I can scrape the game art

      • All I did was image my backup to a new sd and it works as delivered. OTG etc.

  • To anyone whose received theirs, what is the included rom set like?

It depends on your preferences. Lots of Nintendo and SNES as well as N64 however n64 doesn’t play great. My preference is early Sega, Nintendo, and Amiga. It pretty much doesn’t have c64/amiga/atari etc however these are available online. Mine was 64g version and internet archive has a 128gb image.
