Oh wow, one of the most atmospheric games I’ve ever played. It used to creep me out with some of the background sounds you’d hear. Definitely worth playing through again! For those who don’t know, this was developed by the same team who went on to build Bioshock and its successors.

Fun fact: the development studio was based in Canberra, and I used to unknowingly walk past their front door almost every day on the way to work.

    • finally they remastered system shock 2!!!

I remember being so unimpressed that the twist in Bioshock was the same one from System Shock

well, TBF, it's not exactly the same

        • it's more of a horror mystery story trope that the villain is in control of everything - including the player's actions.

This is something of a spoiler, so i'll be careful

Disney Villains have the same twist (sic). Because it's part of the anti-hero twist that heroes are not so virtuous when beheading all the beasts along the way to gain strength, sic. Something has to be lost in the conflict that was part of how the villain was born / introduced, or how they interact, sic. Especially in stories where you want a sympathetic villain.

It is an Evil AI story - SHODAN is right there on the cover.

Controlling the Narrative, Controlling the Player, playing games, etc.

Almost literally the story has to revolve with interacting with SHODAN in both stories to different degrees - so POV is always going to be reflective / antagonistic. MGS also has the same Evil AI is in control of everything story with Colonel Campbell at the end of MGS2 Sons of Liberty - where you find out your leader is an AI overlord manipulating everything. (spoilers)

It's not quite 'the same' as Bioshock - because Metal Gear Solid also has a similar 'you were the villain all along' trope - being manipulated by the 'villain' as an accomplice sic. It's also a common horror trope that the protag is the unknowing antagonist - because it's part of the mystery story formula when you have an unreliable narrator (sic). It's also a really common form of The Villain is the Hero of their own story.

that's a great break down and better than I could have put it. I was moreso just referring to the surface level similarities in the twist that Polito is SHODAN/Atlas is Fontaine

@Aldonis: The probable reason you see Bioshock having a similar thesis/story is that Ken Levine worked on both.

Well, kind of a side note and I suppose spoilers, a lot of the Looking Glass devs moved from the company into other studios, and Thief, Dishonored, Bioshock, Prey et al. came from the Alums/devs that worked in Origin/LGS.

Levine originally concepted SS2 as a different franchise, Junction Point as a spinoff of System Shock, with different concept / art https://shodan.fandom.com/wiki/System_Shock_2_Original_Pitch…

but when the studio got bought out by Origin/EA, EA wanted to tie the concept into the System Shock Universe/franchise again to leverage the original fans - as EA understood the marketing for System Shock as a FPS type shooter / RPG had more magnetic appeal. The original concept was more of a Cyberpunk story aka Junction Point set on a space station - which was a Thief-like stealth gameplay - similar to a Dead Space Deus Ex 'thing'.

In a way, System Shock 2 is an amalgam of ideas in the late 90s - which was later refined into concepts like Dishonored, Thief, Bioshock, Arkane's Prey, and so on.

  • 60% off for anyone wondering

      Historical low for this game

this game is worth it!!!! system shock 2 is my favorite one of the series.

        • Wonder if the coop netcode is more stable in this remaster. It was damn near impossible to get a 3 player game going on the original game.

  • +2

    That and Hades, cheers.

  • Might be a stupid question, but should I play the system shock one remake first?

    • +3

      I wouldn't say it's necessary.

This game scared me as a kid. Could only play so long before I had to quit. Hard too.

  • Could never play the original System Shock 2 back in the day. It used to give me the worst motion sickness.

And other great quotes as well.

My fave is "yes she's a beauty! The compass in the handle will sure come in handy too!"

        Criminally underrated comment.

one of the best games of all time. Btw its some of the same people who have moved around to different studios over time, but basicaly from ultima underworld 1,2 to system shock, deus ex, thief, to system shock 2,, bioshock, prey . They took similar ideas and attention to detail as well as atmosphere. Have played this game start to finish in co-op with a mate multiple times with different characters.
