Will it just be Ben's now since Jerry left?

Selling diabetes / obesity causing sugar and carbs, empty calories, and pretending to be a saint is in fact very hard….

        • +8

Using business for purpose is actually hard, and I wish more businesses would do that to lift communities and people, rather than straight up pure capitalism and profit for shareholders/owners.

To say its selling diabetes is just ridiculous really.

          • @ChristmasTree: There are plenty of ice creams in the USA offering natural (not chemical) sweeteners with much less calories and very low G.I. , and I guess B&J are not into these….

At the end of the day it is up to the individual (to maintain 0 calorie surplus / deficit, and their health), but I think most of their fans are not these type of people….

            • @fl360: Would be a good combo to get into natural ingredients and a business for purpose!
TBH I havent inspected the ingredients of BJs. I just know about their non-ice cream endeavors - which form their advertising. I find that interesting.

            • @fl360: At the end of the day, ice cream is a treat!

              • @lostinsydney: Agree, I have B&J too, but almost followed by at least 8,000 steps…

50% off the name of the brand too

I'm not sure why they sold their company to Unilever. They had more money than they ever needed keeping their own company and they could've run it how they wanted it.

      • +13

According to this 2012 article the popular narrative appears to be that they were required to because they were a public company and had to act to benefit shareholders, though the article itself does push back on that idea if you're interested enough to read through it.

        • +6

Thank you for sharing. I am interested enough to read it, because I'm curious (that's why I asked the question).

          • @kiriakoz: so kiriakozAI, summarise the article for me.

      I will happily replace Jerry.

    • Are these with half the taste?

    • +2

Seinfeld has joined the business, so no.

  • +24

Those are becoming highly expensive! $7 when half price!

    • +1

yes, bit of a treat like haagen daz when 1/2 price, inbetween eating connoisseur or aldi ice cream.

  • +47

Full of cheap fillers, poor value for money even at half price.
Better off buying a high quality icecream and adding your own mix ins.

      • +5

Yep garbage these days. Much prefer the Murray Street Shortbread ice cream with 1l sometimes at $6

    • +11

So true. Absolute garbage. Owned by Unilever says enough about the greedy nature of the company.

      • +1

$7.25 for less than a pint of ice cream at 1/2 off? no deal

    • +5

Tough crowd, there’s at least 30c worth of ingredients in one of these tubs. Add another 5c for packaging and you start to see the value.

    • +2

      7.25 for not even 500ml.

    • are we actually negging because of Israel/Palestine, Unilever or the product has actually gotten bad?

It feels like a fake neg.

      • Did anyone say anything about any of that? I don't even know what you are talking about, what a ridiculous comment and talk about being paranoid. This is a poor quality product filled up with cheap fillers rather than ice cream. And the ice-cream itself is sub par, full of thickeners, soy oil, coconut oil, vegetable oil, invert sugar, carrageenan, guar gum etc. That is also before you even get the the environmental impact of sending ice-cream from USA to Australia via frozen transportation, a company that supposedly cares about the environment yet clearly is acting contrary to the values.

      • -3

They deserve to be negged in that aspect as well but all of these negs are purely for the product quality and insane pricing which doesn't correspond to the quality and quantity by any means at all.

    • +24

The USA? You mean the country famous for deep-fried butter and Red 3?

Wow! Impressive, your comment is the second dumbest thing I’ve read online.

      • Wow! Impressive, your comment is the second dumbest thing I’ve read online

Is this a riddle? What is the dumbest thing you've read online?

        • +4

          Just now? Your comment history.

      • +1

Ironic that you missed the sarcasm in my comment, my feathered friend.

        • +5

          Are you fkn serious?

        • +1

…. just so long as its at least 50% sugar or salt .. have you tried US supermarket bread ?? .. yetch!!

        • +1

Of course, they use soybean oil. Soy and corn are some of the most subsidised agricultural products overthere so there are products derived from these two plants in everything from makeup to batteries, and while palm oil is an unhealthy saturated fat that contributes to orangutan extinction, soy and corn contain GMOs in the US which are banned from food in Australia - only GMO cotton is allowed.

More info on our actual food standards at fsanz.gov.au - compare against FDA limits. You're not wrong that the US has strict food laws, and in some cases they are stricter than ours, but they're so influenced by industry that the government is already subsidising that you get really perverse outcomes.

        • I think you need to watch a documentary or two on the food industry in America.

    $8 for 475ml ice cream??? T

  • +8

Yeah it's a rip-off but if anyone can find me another (non Ben & Jerry's)icecream similar to Phish Food that has marshmallow in it, I'm all ears.

    • +2

Buy Kapiti ice cream from NZ (Aldi) and mix in some gummi bears and random lollies would be the best I could come up with. It's all just sugar anyway, and when you're that high it's more about the texture more than the flavour.

      • +1

I've heard good things about Kapiti. Will have to give it a try, won't be putting any garbage in it though.

  • This is the worst ice cream on the planet….

    • That's a chunky

My palate is so underdeveloped that I find the $5.5/2L Bulla Creamy Classics plenty satisfying - minus the brain fog that comes with any dairy for my body. The thug life chose me.

    • not a matter of under developed palate, more what flavour and texture you like in an ice cream, ben and jerry have some flavours some people like, i’m more a haagen daz if feeling indulgent, but love bulla on pancakes or with canned fruit.

    • Thug life lmaooo

  • +1

I hope the Oat Choc Chip is actually included this time!

  • OMG 😧 that is half price!! I had to check twice.

  • -3

Australia is definitely not the place for good quality ice-cream.
    I wonder why?

    • +2

      NZ has awesome ice cream

  • +4

I’ll stay with Golden North ice cream. SA made and the most delicious. Far cheaper too.

    • +1

If you can get these tasty local brands near you, more power to ya. I used to get this expensive small batch NSW one, forget the name of the brand but the ice cream was fresh and delicious. Kapiti from NZ does the job for me, usually pick up a tub when I'm at Aldi, no Foodlands near me :)

    • haha I emailed them one time (I'm on the east coast) to confirm what they were stocking at a nearby IGA (because their socials were saying they were heading east to select IGAs). It was like pulling teeth, like they didn't care if I bought it or not. Good luck to them.

😂 Ice cream brings out all the sensitive souls in the comments section

    • +1

Correct, and it's almost all people eating this type of stuff way too much. Ice cream is a once in a while treat, reasonable at this price.
The next B&J poster had better drop a link to some discount tissues while at it!

I have a Phish Food problem. Gotta stay away.

  • It’s so meandering now, and I can’t tell if my tastes changed or the quality has. I loved phish food but the last few times it’s so gloopy and the ice cream texture not fantastic. Still, for $7.25 that’s mcflurry territory- great ice cream is in the $10-30 mark now unfortunately.

  • Their Banoffee variant seems to be gone… The bloody same as Bulla's Murray St line. I can never have nice things…

  • Too expensive for half a litre, of what is - to be honest - fairly stodgy, constipated ice cream. They need fresher flavours like Haaggen Daasz.

  • BJ all the way 🤭💪🏿
