We all sell our Ally's as we dont use them. Oh and battery duration is shite

yeah fork out for the oled its just better. I know the price sounds good for trhe LCD but trust me you need to go the better speced oled version.

Legion Go S is perfect form factor and supports the SteamOS. The clearance sale was a pretty good deal IMO. I’m not a serious gamer so something I can pickup and play quickly whenever I have time makes gaming much more accessible for me

Have you tried SteamOS on the Legion Go, I've heard good things and its officially supported https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-42…

Not terrible given switch 2 pricing, but I'll wait for steam deck 2. Steam really screwed it up by making us wait 2.5 years to be officially available. That's halfway through a product life cycle, give or take (don't need nitpickers here.. anyone that does that is simply missing the point). Yes it could be years to wait, current rumour being 2028, but this is expensive gear and games have become more taxing since it's release.
No discount on OLED fyi, not a complaint just a comment so others don't need to click the link.

no lies told
they fucced around for ages and it got so bad that by the time it was for sale competitors had already jumped in
also by now zen2 is really old and if you waited this long you may as well live to see how deck 2 works out

Exactly, I was holding out for Valve to release the Steam Deck here rather than risk the issues with importing one through the grey market, but in the meantime Asus released the ROG Ally so I bought that instead.

There's been Deck 2 rumours for years now. I'd agree that the Deck is showing its age, but there is still a MASSIVE library of games that it can play. If you need to play your Steam library on the go, then I wouldn't bother waiting.

I am too important to wait for Deck 2, I simply need to play my games in the back seat of the car today!

mini pc mounted to the rear of the passenger seat with tray table mouse/keyboard is the true backseat experience.

I dont think we will get steam deck 2 at launch, we always get the scraps later

I think we will. I remember reading something about Valve setting up their distribution network in Aus / other regions properly so that it's solid and so they're ready to go for any future products, which is why it took so long for them to officially sell it here in the first place.
Here's the source:
https://press-start.com.au/features/2024/10/11/valve-intervi…
“We wanted to be able to sell it through Steam. And part of that is that we’re hoping that the investment we put into the infrastructure would allow us to sell future hardware in Australia much faster. We just want to do it once and do it correctly and pave the way for future things.” said Aldehayyat.

I asked my friend to order it in US in 2022. for product like steam deck, the first round stock level is always limited. au market is likely left behind, similar to the Nvidia product

That's promising. Here's hoping.

Until you've actually used a Steamdeck and seen how they handle Linux gaming, you don't understand how far ahead of everyone else the Steamdeck is.
Compatibility, shader cache loading, refresh rate/FSR/framegen tinkering and controller inputs are what put it waaaaay ahead of any other handheld.
Apart from a few of the multiplayer games you can't play (due to anticheat), there is no better comparison.

Comparison? Do you mean competition, or are you comparing it to Switch 2?

Comparison/competition… choose your grammar nazi. Switch 2 is irrelevant.
There is no handhold close to the Steamdeck in terms of user/gaming experience. The more powerful ones have sub-standard interfaces/compatibility and in fact some of the time somewhat inferior performance.
Bazzite can be close, but it isn't quite there.

@Thiefsie: Also to clarify, a bunch of first party games will come to Switch 1 - see Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Legends Z-A, coming later this year.
Also, nothing can emulate Switch 2 at the moment, so…. again… Steamdeck is the best option unless you need those two games above, and then well, you better pony up for a Switch 2 and gargle down those Miyamoto orbs.
For reference, Metroid Dread runs 60fps on Steamdeck. It does not on Switch itself.

Steam said they have no intention of a revision device.
Furthermore, strix halo is only like, 15% improvement based on the traditional architecture. 395+ may come to steam deck and that's a HUGE improvement but that will need quite a few mobo revisions to get there.
So I think this steam deck is safe to be used for a while. It's still one of the best apu device ATM

If they want to stay relevant they'll need a revision. But fully appreciated it will be a minimum of a few years.

The APUs are currently bottlenecked by lack of ram bandwidth. So we'll be stuck with 780m performance for a few years, with the van gogh matching the 890m in lower tdp profile.
So yeah, it'll be quite a few years until the 395+ motherboard design become consumer grade

@Wonderfool: I agree, I also think battery life and physical size / weight are higher on Valve's priority list than just more raw power. I'm hoping that we see a thinner, sleeker device in the Steamdeck 2.

They created the Steam Deck as a template for others to base their SteamOS handhelds off of.

This is correct.
I poked and prodded them at PAX '24 — the official line from the engineers on the floor was they were waiting for an "appreciable leap" in performance at the same power profile before considering a SD2.

The only real reason for a steam deck revision ATM is for a oculink connector, which I think the van gogh apu lacks the pcie lanes for. So if you want that kind of solution, it'll need to be an ally or gpd.

Yep, and I totally get that approach too. I feel we're nearing that point where the new handhelds aren't just a little better, they're significantly better - especially the Switch 2. It blows the Steam Deck out of the water, and PC handhelds are starting to catch up.
Now that the Switch 2 is out, they have a definitive benchmark of battery life and performance to at least meet, and ideally exceed. And if anyone can do that, it's Valve.

Agree. I imported mine 2023, it feels far too late to be getting one now.
As much as I love my Steam Deck, I haven't been recommending it for the past year-ish. I love that Valve want to support this long-term, but I'm really hoping we're gonna see a Steam Deck 2 in 2026 or 2027 at the latest. The positive thing is that the reason it took so long to release in Australia is they were arranging a more permanent trade route. So we can expect to get the Steam Deck 2 (along with the leaked "deckard" being announced any day now) on or close to release.

Saving up for a legion go 2, has everything you'd want from a gaming portable 😅.

And how much does it cost? Damn…starting price $1800…what a laughing stock.

The Legion can't even play all Steam games.

Go 2 only 10-20% performance gain over the previous gen, and they want to charge you twice or 3 times the cost..No Thanks.

Not looking at price, just has everything I'd need.

When it comes to almost 1kg in my view its nolonger a gaming portable its a laptop with controller

It's expensive and heavy, better off waiting to see what the competition is like first.

volvo pls fix

Got negged for warning everyone about a common fault where the battery suddenly dies, because it happened to me. Ozbargainers are an odd bunch

belongsinforums

Volvo ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give DIRETIDE

googled what you said. the first 5-6 i went through were all resolved by holding power and volume up button. You're massively overblowing the situation. Considering the Steamdeck subreddit is full to the brim of people gushing over the product.
I've had mine for 3 years now and it hasn't missed a beat.

Yeah sometimes i play steamdeck for months then it goes into cupboard for a year. The battery can go completely dead, but each time its always come back fine with a good charge and this button combo.

You're welcome to try that on mine. I think the only fix is to detach the battery and plug it back in. Unfortunately I don't carry around a screwdriver set with me on holidays

Feel free to send it to me. I'll fix it for you.

Never had PC/steam. Is it true you don’t have to pay an annual subscription to online? So you would nearly make your money back in 5 years not paying for PS5 plus or Xbox live?

true

Yeah but steam deck doesn’t support kernel level anti cheat so you’re locked out of a lot of the biggest multiplayer games. Not a great comparison.

I've already bought one, you don't need to sell it to me any more

I never play online or multiplipayer games. So this is good for me?

Use ProtonDB site to check games you want to play on Deck. Keep in mind this can change at any time.

Nobody is buying a handheld console to play the latest multiplayer games. That's like buying a standard sedan to race in the F1.

Never had PC
bro has never owned a computer. that's crazy

Had MACs at home and PC for work, never played games on a PC. Had all the Nintendos since Super NES and all the PSs

This is cool but a second hand ROG ally with Bazzite is also a great option for tinkerers.

What is bazzite and how much 2nd hand ally?

Bazzite is basically SteamOS but not exactly. Gaming-based Linux distro.

That's what I did…$500 for a used ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme) on FB Marketplace…then I went to town…74whr battery, 4TB SSD, new back case (better cooling), external battery pack, travel case, dock etc…about $1100 all up. Dual boot Bazzite and Windows, loving it so far. International trip coming this weekend…

Perfect timing for the newly released Dying Light The Beast. Let's go Crane!

On a steam deck? You might get 30fps at the lowest settings

Even a slight discount on the OLED edition and I'm in

Same, and my LCD will gop to a family member

Hi bro

Save and wait for the OLED, trust me, side by side comparison of the screens.
The OLED is amazing.

I have the OLED.
It's better in every way but $380 better?
Nah.

I personally think so.
Screen is a big upgrade, but it’s not just the screen being LCD vs OLED.
It's also:
60Hz vs 90Hz
Battery is improved is because of the OLED, ~55% battery improvement, meaning an average of 1 - 4 hours extra battery life.
The touchscreen's responsiveness improved.
Haptics improved.
And has a 2 - 9 % performance boost as well.Edit: better wifi chip as well, +35% base speed.

Just wait until this deal is over and then it's only $250 more, easy money!

Don't sleep. Get one. Get OLED if you have the $$$, but otherwise these things are incredible.

Love the stream deck. But if you can try to the OLED. Worth the investment

This is the Steam Deck by Valve. Not the Stream Deck by Elgato. So close though.

lol you caught the typo, congrats

Can i play switch 1 games on this (without tooth much tinkering)

yes

How easy is the return refund policy?

Answer: Easy.
Mate there is a thing called Google for all of you questions

This is actually tempting despite its age, if they accepted AfterPay I wouldn't be able to stop myself.

I've had the OLED for a year and a half now. Fantastic device. I'd buy the second one in a heart beat.

So, how bad of an idea is this? Jump on Insert CS2 skin site name and find some skins that are on a big discount. Buy them for cash and sell on Steam community market. Use that to buy Steam Deck. Or just find a discounted Steam gift card, but I didn't see any. Provided my discount is bigger than the sales charge which I think is 10%, everything over will be my discount on the deck.

not a bad idea as long as the sites legit

i did that a while ago with a csgo butterfly knife, i think valve is cracking down on sites now, so i'd be careful!

and people selling second hand steamdeck like this for $600 at fbmarket

Does anyone know if credit in a steam wallet can be used towards buying the steam deck?

Yes it can be, i found out because i logged into my steam account after being inactive for 5 years, saw my csgo inventory was now worth north of 20k because i never opened cases, sold everything and got 14 steam decks in return.

Could be worth more if VAC worked.

VAC - Valve Allows Cheats

Wow, that’s wild, crazy skins can be worth that much

19.9k was for a knife and gloves, The other 20,000 items he has were worth less than 1c each

Yes it can.
I was thinking of topping up my Steam account with discounted gift cards to make an earlier Steamdeck purchase. The balance is simply the difference between account balance and amount owed.

Thanks very much for clarifying was also thinking about stacking discounted vouchers on top of this bargain in order to get a bigger discount.

Can confirm this works. I bought discounted Ultimate Everyone (I think) gift cards from Coles, then used them in store at EB Games to purchase Steam Wallet gift cards. I then loaded the steam wallet funds to my steam account and it came off the total. The EB Games stores had a limit of 4 or 5 cards per person per day so it took me awhile.

steam will issue invoice with gst, right? hmm tempted with TRS this become $473

Amazing value! Especially if you want a handheld that just works, without having to tinker with Windows settings etc. I have owned the 512 GB one, and traded it for the Legion Go. With the limited gaming time that I have, I miss the pick-up-and-play nature of the deck.
