WD Red Plus 8TB 3.5" NAS HDD $269 Delivered / C&C @ Centre Com

250

You can get a $5 voucher by joining the Centrecom Club Elite tier for free. Currently, WD is running a promotion that offers a $25 e-gift card if you buy two of these HDDs.

I compared the WD Red Plus with the Seagate IronWolf, and based on some Reddit comments, I chose the Red Plus because it’s less noisy. The price between the two is the same (5400 RPM). I know the current price is much higher than in 2023, but this seems to be the reality now, and we have to accept it. It’s very unlikely that HDD prices will drop in the next 6–12 months -AI demand is probably to blame.

According to Forbes:
In 2025, average sales prices (ASPs) of HDDs are up 8.4% quarter-over-quarter and about 17% higher than two years ago. Western Digital and other manufacturers recently raised prices again in late 2025 due to continued strong demand and shipping delays—sometimes as long as 10 weeks—driven by hyperscale and enterprise deployments.

Surcharges: 0% for bank deposit, Afterpay & Zip Money. 1.2% for VISA / MasterCard & PayPal. 2.2% for AmEx.

Free shipping excludes WA, NT & remote areas.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a 3.5" HDD for storing movies? My old 2TB WD green is now full. Looking for 8TB size at a minimum.

    • I have an 8TB WD blue for this purpose as it is a CMR drive

      • +2

I wouldn't be putting a blue drive in a NAS.

        • WD Blue is perfect for general computing needs—ideal for personal computers and external storage.
        • WD Purple is the right choice if you’re building a surveillance system and need reliable, continuous video recording.
        • WD Red Plus is your go-to solution for NAS systems, providing the durability and performance needed for data storage in network environments.
      • +2

wouldn't an SMR drive be better for movie storage?

        • +2

          yes

      • I wasn't suggesting for a NAS

    • 2tb is nothing!
Just buy another 2 x 5tb portables and use one as backup

Ive got 12tb on portable hds, nooow looking for NAS

I’d probably buy a used enterprise drive. At that money you can get about twice the capacity from East Digital.

    • Any link?

      • I was going to recommend a used WD HD550 16TB, but I just saw that price has shot up to $360. :0
        I paid ~$290 only a month ago.

Man what’s going on with HDD prices?

        • -3

Inflation, maybe you've heard of it……

          • +4

            @dav3: 20% in a month?

Nah something else is going on.

    • No, no no!
Well at least not for anything important, east digital is second hand drives!

If rather get a barracuda new!

      • +1

Why do people on Ozb keep advocating for used enterprise drives from East Digital?

Would the factory refurbished drives from East Digital be a solid option?

        • +1

long warranties and generally higher quality drives

        • +3

Because Ozbargain is full of cheapskates, they're great deals if you're happy to deal with an increased chance of them falling over.

Personally I'd rather pay a bit more for newer kit and not have to worry about having to swap them out as often, and enterprise stuff tends to be noisier.

          • @dav3: the loss of loosing multiple drives is real when going second hand, hopefully the redundancies and backups are good enough to get you though, but yeah, second hand just ain't worth it for anything you cant afford to loose.

            • @wisc: Hey wisc, would really appreciate some recommendations for drives, I’m planning on getting a WTR MAX later this year. Thinking of the 10-16TB range, and would appreciate if they’re on the quieter side.

I noticed east digital also has a factory refurbished section, or would you recommend staying clear there too?

          • @dav3: Thanks! I’ll be buying my first NAS later this year, still trying to figure out the sweet spot for drives.

Would their factory refurbished options, still be risky?

Would really appreciate a recommendation for a well priced quiet drive brand to go after!

            • +1

@poppingtags: WD Reds seem to be quieter than the Seagate equivalents, as for well priced you'll need to look around as prices always change, there may be good Black Friday deals in November

            • +2

@poppingtags: Unless you don't care if you lose the data (IE stuff you can easily get again) I'd avoid refurbs/second hand, there is a high chance of multiple drives failing during a rebuild as its so intensive.
though if you do have good backups, it may be less of an issue.

This is what i will be getting:
              https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0832BL1HC?cpf=amazon…
as you can see the price is typically around 433. they had them at msy/umart for 337 the other day, (and i just missed out getting 2 the other day for 420 as i was waiting for a gift card to come though from my rewards program, only takes 5 minutes or so) just watch out as they come in sata and sas, unless you have a sas card, you want the sata.
very close to the ideal 25dollars per gb, I'll be waiting for the next prime day, which is due at the start of next month and grab 6 then. they also go on sale from the US.

having delt with corruption at a VM level, this is extremely painful, i cant imagine loosing a full array. they start off as labs, but then once you start running things like mail servers, photo servers, there is an expectation they will be up and its painful when they arent, specially in regards to mail servers.

              • @wisc: Thanks so much for the detailed reply! I do plan on storing a lot of photos and videos, I bought a 360 camera a while back, and while it gives me a great way to record memories, the files are huge! Definitely happy to spend a little extra knowing that the chance of failure is reduced.

@poppingtags: Dont forget a backup drive, this is critical, RAID is not a backup.

there is like a 3-2-1 backup rule.

"The 3-2-1 backup rule is a data protection strategy that requires three copies of your data, stored on two different storage media, with one copy kept offsite"
my offsite is on a rotating drive I'm supposed to keep at the in-laws, many people use the cloud.

                  • @wisc: For sure, I'm still trying to think of the best way to do this. Potentially setup an offsite make shift NAS from an old desktop, get it to start up in the early hours of the morning, backup critical files and folders from the primary NAS and then go back to sleep. Will probably augment this with some sort of cloud back up too. Thanks again for your help, have found your comments on these topics valuable!

              • @wisc: ERM, sorry MSY was "4"37, not "3"37, 437…. damn at 337 i would have bought 10.

                I only need 6!

          • +1

@dav3: I bought a HGST HC320 4TB in 2018 with 5 years wty. MTBF is 2mil hours. It failed early last week.

    • +2

I bought 2 of 16tb used enterprise drives. Used one of them for DVR and failed within 3 months. Now it is not usable. Now I only use the other one as a backup drive. Will never trust those again.

      • Yikes what a disaster. Did you return it under warranty?

        • +1

They only offer 3 months warranty. Too late.

      • +1

yeah, im using one in a NVR system, because i didnt really care if it dies. its for home only.

  • +2

Do they still have the 3 year warning issue : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGi8sPLkLY ?

Good and quiet drives, I've got two that I bought for $270ea via eBay which was the cheapest at the time.

This is a solid deal when you buy 2 and the $25 egift card (usually a Visa or Mastercard)

  • How would this go for the Tapo Hub 500 for storing the footage?

    • fine

  • this or seagate exos?

    • +2

      Exos every day.

      • ic thanks taco!

  • Good drive, been using for about 18 months in a NAS/backup system. Seek speed doesn't set the world on fire but IMO its a good trade off for longevity and noise levels. The old seagates used to sound like a jet taking off.

  • +1

I wish there were some decent deals on larger drives. I've got a 3x8TB drive RAIDz1 that is constantly pushing 80-90% full, and only real way to upgrade the space is to replace all the drives, or try and migrate to a different topology, neither of which I'm expecting to be cheap.
