if I were to go full frame or just serious photography, this is the camera I would get.

this sensor is very capable, and this camera ticks almost all the boxes. no corners have been cut, if you are a stills photographer.

the only thing that bugs me is lack of top panel display (third world problems I know, but I got used to it so much).

mechanical shutter. great autofocus with AI recognition. weather sealing. awesome RAW files, and that's the main thing. great ergonomics too. and extensive menu with lots of options. solid IBIS.

simply put, this is Zf in conventional body. but that means it's actually more suitable for pro work as it's easier to hold with larger primes and zooms, and can take a beating battery grip, including the one that fits Z6/Z7 which can be had cheap

    • All fair points indeed. I still love using my zf for travel and personal stuff. The smallrig grip or cage mitigates the unique ergonomic challenge.

    • Wish I could get a Zf for this price something about the retro body does it for me

      • I bought a Zf a while back. I barely use it due to the controls being less intuitive for me than the non-retro Nikons. I'm considering selling my Zf and getting a Z5ii instead.

I totally understand if you don’t time to respond to this question.
I am looking for a real knowledgeable perso opinion on this.

Considering I am total newbie and started my research through online forums and blogs. I looked at few options and they sort of point to me that a7cii is best of beginners due to superior ai enhanced autofocus.

But now on further analysis and stats comparison using GPT this one looks like a winner. If you have a budget of 2800 for body would take this over a7cii or any other options.

Usage is mostly the product shoot in indoors for small jewellery and stuff and small reels and should be beginner friendly in terms of settings you need to adjust.

      Thanks in advance. Cheers

I would say that value for money, for what you mentioned, z5ii is the best new camera you can get.

another option for you is eBay -> Sony Australia store -> check refurbished cameras and lenses. with a bit of wait, you can get great deals on refurbished cameras, just wait till they drop stock and wait till 15% coupon on eBay Sony refurbished (whenever someone posts XM4 refurbished deal again). they often have A7 R iii on sale, with 15% off it will be cheaper than this and good high res sensor handy for product shots.

but if you only want new, z5ii is great, S glass 1.8 primes are cheap, means that cost of ownership can be lower if you use primes.

otherwise A7iii with something like 50mm 1.4 can be had for good money refurbished on Sony eBay as mentioned above.

A7cii is OK but no mechanical shutter. and Sony ergonomics aren't good. Sony doesn't listen.

        • Really appreciate your input on this I am also inclined towards z5ii after reading your analysis in above 2 comments and did a quick search around I will commit to z5 ii for now.

Cheers mate enjoy the rest of your day.

    • What will be a good lens that you recommend for beginners doing some travel-related content?

      • 35mm 1.8 S is an awesome prime lens. built like tank, very good optics, I used one in studio, and it's great. sharpness and contrast are amazing. it's an amazing lens for travel. you can capture an atmosphere, do an environmental portrait, shoot food or drinks, and 1.8 is fast enough for darker setups.

24mm might be a bit too wide, but may work better for some people

40mm/2 is a cheaper prime option that works well too, and won't cost a lot, but 35 1.8 S has better optics and suitable for professional work

  • with all that said above, I am tempted to get one, but not enough incentive for me to move away from my EOS R. getting long in the tooth, but the same sensor went into 5d mk iv, and those RAW files are very good too. 30mp let me use RF 24-105 F4L as a one lens solution for everything in studio, I crop to 4:5 and still have a lot of very good pixels to work with.

and I got the battery grip for it and triggers and flash and whatnot. switching systems would be a pain lol

even though I could sell R and 24-105 and replace with z5ii and one of Nikon's S 1.8 primes (most likely 50mm) or 2nd hand 24 70 F4 S without being out of pocket noticeably. decisions decisions

  • Still running the original Z5, which has served me well, but really tempting to upgrade at this price..

Looks like they have dropped the price of the Nikkor Z 24-120 F4 by ~100 (since yesterday) to $1448, and then $200 off = $1248 (if you buy body and lens separately it appears to be $200 off each)

  • This is a great deal - I picked one up a few months ago when they were $2,100.

Looking to sell my Z5 II now as I'm moving out of Nikon, but its an epic body.
