Could you explain why someone would pay $150 a year to generate QR codes when they can just as easily go to something like QRCode Monkey and generate colourful and customised frame QR codes for free?

OP's done the old post and run. I get the feeling deep down they know the "deal" is not going to go down well on this website.

      • Hey, I’m still here 🙂 definitely not a post and run. I appreciate the feedback, even if it’s tough. I know this won’t be for everyone, especially casual users who just need the odd free QR code. Our plan is more for businesses that need dynamic links, analytics, and Aussie-based hosting/support.

Happy to answer questions if anyone wants to dig into features or use cases. Thanks

Being as generous as possible, this is more the equivalent of QRCode Monkeys business plan (https://www.qr-code-generator.com). It's basically a marketing platform, the QR code links go through their servers and give you analytics on who is using your code.

      • Exactly right 👍 free generators are great for one-off static codes, but what we’re offering is closer to what you’ve described: a business platform rather than just a generator.

Dynamic links (change destination anytime without reprinting)

        Analytics (track scans by time/device/location)

Business features like password protection, scheduling, and A/B rotation

All hosted securely in Australia 🇦🇺 (many overseas platforms host offshore)

So for casual users, free tools make sense. For businesses who want ongoing management and analytics, that’s where our Pro plan fits in. Thank you!!

    • You’re absolutely right, if all you need is a one-off static QR code, free tools like QRCode Monkey are great. Our plan is different: it’s for businesses that need dynamic QR codes (editable after printing), analytics (see how many scans, when, and where), branding removal, and local Australian hosting so your data doesn’t go offshore. That’s where the value comes in ongoing management, not just a single free QR. Thanks

      • Okay, sure. That makes sense. Obviously this is all things that a business could do themselves as well, but they can also just pay you to take the hassle of developing and managing these services themselves.

  • Love an Aussie business but is there any benefit to having a middleman? i.e. why should a business go through you instead of simply having QR code read directly to a business’s website?

    • Fair point and thanks for supporting local. On the middleman: the difference is that our service adds a management layer. Instead of your QR code going straight to a raw URL, it goes through your dynamic link where you can:

Update the destination anytime (no reprinting)

Run campaigns (password protect, schedule, rotate links)

      Get 1-year of analytics

Ensure data is hosted securely in Australia

For many small businesses, this saves time and gives them peace of mind vs DIY setups. thanks once again.

IIRC Linktree QR was free, yes they do hosting too or try Blinq.

Tbh it wouldn't sound too bad if it was like $1/m - This isn't any better than a hobby project & you shall not try hit a jackpot with that.

    • Sure, I wish we will have the scale to charge $1 month for casual users. Our Pro plan is targeted at businesses that rely on QR codes for marketing, events, menus, payments, etc. (not casual users). Running and supporting a secure, ad-free, Australian-hosted service has costs, but we’ve kept it lower than most international competitors who charge USD. thanks

  • Gross. This is a case of there being a lukewarm, barely0deal, on a product which itself is lock-in subscription spam.

invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara of the Japanese company Denso Wave, instead of monotising it, he decided to open to public for free and here we are trying to make money out of it

    • this is a great comment. +1

    • Absolutely QR itself is free and open. We’re not charging for the QR code technology itself. We’re charging for the platform that manages dynamic codes, analytics, branded links, secure hosting, and business features. Many businesses don’t want to cobble this together themselves or risk data going offshore. thanks once again.

  • They used AI for the title and still got the formatting wrong 😂

This just looks like some vibecoded cash grab,
i guess the only cool thing is the pixel targetting but defos not worth the price when it can be done for free with a days worth of effort

    Trash

Multiple websites generate free QR and barcode codes. What a weird business/deal proposition.

    $149 per year, hilarious.

  • +1

You could do it yourself for free using Zint Barcode Generator which is used by glabels

  • No bargain here as there are free alternatives as mentioned above. Say no to OzB becoming OzFreeAdz.
Edit - Accidentally hit upvote so now can't neg, dumb.

    • +1

Next time that happens, click the neg and it will switch over. If you revoke the upvote and then try and neg it won't work.

      • Oh right thanks, I haven't been here long so still learning.

    This isnt a deal

    • -1

Thanks for the feedback. We know this deal won’t be for everyone, especially those who just need the odd free QR code. But for businesses who want a reliable, local, ad-free solution with analytics and support, we think $149/year is fair. Appreciate the honesty and will take this feedback onboard.

      • You might think it's 'fair', seems that no one else does.

        • All good. thanks

  • -1

Hey everyone, thanks for all the feedback, I knew posting here might be tough, but I appreciate the honesty.

    Just to clarify:

✅ If you only need a one-off static QR code, free tools like QRCode Monkey or Zint are absolutely the way to go.

✅ Our Pro plan is aimed at businesses that rely on QR codes for marketing, menus, events, payments, etc. and need:
    • Dynamic links (edit destination anytime without reprinting)
    • Analytics & reporting (see scans by time/device/location)
    • Advanced features like password protection, scheduling, A/B rotation
    • Ad-free, branding-free links
    • Australian hosting & support 🇦🇺

We’re not charging for the QR code itself (that’s free and open). The subscription covers the platform and management layer that saves time for businesses and keeps data local.

I know this won’t be for everyone here, and that’s okay — but I wanted to put it out there for those who need more than just a free static generator. Appreciate the feedback and will take it onboard for future offers. 🙏

  • I’m not understanding the justification. I hate the idea of shutting down someone with ideas but this just can’t be monetised especially for this price.

Australian hosting isn’t particularly expensive > businesses like VentraIP are great for that. The argument that it avoids data going offshore - a direct link to website from the QR code means data doesn’t get overseen by a third party. If anything, wouldn’t it be more secure to have a link direct to the website and not involve a third party?

No reprints as URL can be changed- yes, this is a point but also on the flip side, a business can change what’s loaded on the URL the code points to, or even set up a redirect.

Ad-free, branding free: again, direct QR code means this isn’t even a consideration.

The only thing here is analytics- but this can be included on the website.

There may be a market for your business. B2B is a wild world where businesses are paying for all sort of ridiculous stuff.

But I don’t think there’s a market for you on OzB. This isn’t a bargain. We spend a lot of time here finding ways to do things cheaper (even if it involves more labour).

Your service isn’t going to save a business money, and here on OzB, the community generally does things for $ savings, not pay extra for an illusion of convenience.

  • Fair points, and I agree. OzB is about saving $$ even if it means DIY. Our platform isn’t the cheapest way to make a QR but it’s for businesses that want a simple all-in-one with analytics + local support. Appreciate the constructive feedback 🙏
We’ve run a 50% discount before and will look at doing something like that again for the OzB community. Thanks again!!
