Received an email to receive free Starlink mini as long as I remain on my residential plan. Most likely targeted but check your email. Perfect as I was looking for one to chuck in my van.

  • I wonder if there are other T&Cs like you cannot have it on Standby Mode.

    • Free until you activate roaming, no other T&C I can find.

      • Yeah, but I wonder if they will restrict it so when it is activated, you cannot have it on standby mode.

They had this previously with a bundle, where you could bundle SL Residential and then SL Roaming Mini 50GB for like $150 or something a month. But you couldn't pause the SL Roaming and couldn't upgrade. If you wanted to go up because you maxed out the 50GB, you had to change the plan and lost the bundle pricing.

The “switch anytime” and “flexibility” I take as I use only when I need, but we will see.

        • +1

That may be the case, on their standby FAQ page it says under important notes that "Standby Mode is not available for rental customers." and the offer notes it is "provided as a rental"

@stronem: There we go. I don't see why Starlink would provide a $600 piece of equipment which allows you to have it on Standby at $8.50 a month and only use it a couple of times a year at $80 a month (or pro-rata mount). The ROI doesn't make sense.

12 months at $80 is $960 return to Starlink. So it makes it worth it for them.

Mine is currently on standby and the in-laws using it when caravanning. Just crossed the country. It was fine for them to update FB and make wifi calls. Now in better coverage areas and using their phones. Def worth that $8.50 if something happened.

Customer for over 3 years no email, interesting way to target loyal customers….

Brand loyalty is dead. They only care until the next financial forecast/report.

The surcharge for a new connection in Brisbane at the moment is insane - $1,295. Think I'll wait until there is more capacity.

    • +1

Thats residential, shouldn't apply to roam.

      • Can you buy a new dishy directly on roam?

        • Gen 3 Standard Kit? Yes, but not at the $149 discount price unless you do a work around, that has yet to be proven that it actually works.

          • @geekcohen: I bought the Gen 3 kit at $149. It's sitting in the office unopened, but there is the option to activate it on both the roam plan and on standby.

            • @cv05: Standby also works for fulfilling the discounted price commitments? That sounds good lol.

              • @timedzone: There aren't any commitments, it's just if you don't pay the full sub that you forgo the $20 discount. You can just not pay the sub.

            • @cv05: Yeah, it'll activate automatically after 30 days if you don't change the plan beforehand.

So if you have it on the Residential, it'll activate after 30 days unless you change it to Standby mode.

The surcharge pricing is necessary, far too many people were claiming that the NBN was a waste of money as Starlink was far superior etc. In reality it is an amazing technology, but only suited to niche use cases and limited numbers.

It would be nice if Starlink made efforts to kick people off who live in decent NBN areas to free up capacity for those who actually need it. People who are unable to get the new 5G NBN FW, or at the end of long runs of dodgy copper on FTTN without a free fibre upgrade offer should be prioritised.

Now they start to offer free kits like most of of the NBN retailers who also rent out back then, then slowly not bothered collecting back.

  • What's stopping me from paying my friend and using this, instead of paying the extortionate "Demand Surcharge" ?

    • Nothing really. The Mini is not really designed for a home fixed location.
