Booking.com: 12% (13% SB Plus) Cashback on Accomodation / Hotels (Was 5.5%) @ ShopBack

101

Shopback Plus users get 13% cashback, 12% Cashback for Hotels for regular users.

Here's some important tips to make sure you're paying the lowest prices:

Booking.com may display a higher hotel rate / price when shopping through a cashback provider . This is usually the case for a lot of chain brand hotels. I recommend opening two different types of browsers (e.g Firefox + Chrome), one with cashback enabled and one without, and compare the prices side by side to see which hotels raise their prices.

Prices displayed on the Desktop site and through the Mobile (App) can be quite different. I recommend doing your preliminary research on the desktop site first, but complete the booking through mobile app. About 50% of the time, I usually get offered a lower price (Mobile-only discont)

Be sure to read the booking terms properly as some of these discounted options come with a big catch (non-refundable booking). If you are booking far in advance, it's worth paying the extra money for free cancellation, just to cover your buttocks in case your travel plan changes or if you find a better place elsewhere.

The usual terms are as follows:

Exclusions

You won't get Cashback on:

Flights and Packages (unless otherwise stated)
Any expenditure outside of the room rate (eg. in-room dining, spa etc)
Booking.basic reservations and Bookings made on external partner pages
Fees · Taxes · Service charges · Booking fees · Credit card charges
Any exceptions will be at the store's discretion.

Refunds, cancellations and no-shows

Any rejected, cancelled, refunded, exchanged or returned purchases will not be eligible for Cashback.
No-shows and any booking changes that lead to a change in the booking ID will not be eligible for Cashback.
We can only track your Cashback if you show up for your booking.

  • Is it ok if SB directs me to the Booking app or should I delete it?

    • Cashback tracked as $0 in the first attempt. So I cancelled the booking and it tracked successfully the 2nd time.

It redirected me to the Booking app both times.

A reminder to always check the price without going through shopback first. 90% of the time I look at the initial price, then remember to click shopback, and then the price goes up 10-15% with shopback enabled. So it probably will be cheaper without shopback (in my personal experience)

Avoid Booking.com like the plague. I had a flight cancelled by AirAsia, they were no longer flying the route, so I was due a refund. It took Booking.com two months to request it from AirAsia. Then another two months to return the funds to me. I kept getting canned responses from front line support who refused to deviate from the script and look at the nuances of the situation, and refused to escalate the issue to supervisors. I had to pursue it with Consumer Protection. At first, Booking.com replied with a 10 page legal letter about there being no issue. Then after sending a letter from my bank confirming they didn't have the funds, they finally processed a refund. If they had looked into the case instead of sending canned responses and writing 10 pages of wank, they could have resolved it so much sooner.

    Book direct.

Sorry you had a terrible experience.

I only book accommodation and attractions with Booking.

It's a shame they are sloppy with bank refunds. I always pay via PayPal (linked to my credit card) and advise to do that to all my friends. Vendors treat PayPal customers much nicer because they know how easy it is to open a paypal dispute and paypal never refused my request for refund.

      • Just curious what type of PayPal disputes you’ve done and is it similar to the credit card charge back?

When I book hotels, I choose the free cancellation and pay at the hotel if it's available. It's more expensive, but I figure it'll be less hassle.

It's discussed a lot on other travel forums like TripAdvisor, Booking.com's back end platform is the same as GoToGate
      https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1-i10702-k14570694…

Their business model involves buying tickets in bulk / volume quantities to resell, so they can resell it again to you for a slightly lower price (or higher price, depending on how desperate the customer is)

But… whenever things go pear-shaped they just become a middle man / third party that complicates matters. Booking directly with airline costs a little bit more but there's less chances of a stuff-up when you can't travel or need to change dates.

Thanks for sharing this information that they are part of or linked to Gotogate. I am looking to book accommodation and now I will avoid Booking.com for that particular reason as I just had bad experience with Gotogate for flight booking. Never gonna use Gotogate or any of the partner business services for anything.

I never use booking.com for flights or any other third parties. You are just asking for troubles.
