  • Is this aqara doorbell better or Tplink Tapo D325 ? Any one use either ?

    • I’ve had the Tapo D235 for about 10 months and installed another for my parents. Great unit! Can’t comments on the Aqara.

    • I've had the Aqara for around 5 months now and I chose it because it is the only wireless Apple Homekit supported doorbell on the market. I like how it uses AA batteries which makes replacement much easier, as opposed to a proprietary battery from TP link. Lastly, you don't need to purchase a subscription to take full advantage of the hardware, although they still offer one for additional storage.

My only complaint is that the receiver must be 5 meters from the doorbell unit, which isn't easy considering how interference like walls or electronic devices can reduce that. There's also around a 2-3 second delay when spotting someone, and the person needs to be within 5 meters.

I don't know if most doorbells are like this, but the Aqara requires connection to mains if you want all day recording (like CCTV) saved to the micro SD card. A separate kit is required, which costs roughly $40 on Amazon.

If cost isn't an issue, get the Aqara G410. You get a 4:3 aspect ratio (arguably best for doorbell cams) and better camera quality without the delay.

      • I’m on the fence too because of the camera aspect ratio, part of the whole point of this camera is to get Homekit Secure Video and package detection, but it doesn’t work because of the wide aspect ratio, it can’t see both faces and the door step.

RRP is irrelevant too, it’s been marked down from $139 and the original RRP would just about get you the newer G410

      • You don’t actually need a hardwire kit. Any 12–24V AC or DC power adapter will work fine. However, avoid using an HPM 12V transformer, as it barely supplies 8V.

      • Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I'll be returning my purchase from Glen Waverley (VIC) if anyone wants the last one.

Can anyone comment on the lock?

    • +1

Lock is pretty good. Very sturdy, works well with Homekit, I had one on my internal garage door which was retrofitted instead of the passage door handle, later I switched to the U300. But yes, U100 is very well built, just like a deadbolt should be. Battery life was also pretty good.

      • +1

Care to share why you decided to switch to U300 later on? heard online reviews that U100 sometimes goes offline?

        • +1

I switched to U300 because as I mentioned previously, I had the U100 installed as retrofit instead of my doorknob and given the U100 is not very convenient to be used on its own (no handle), I decided to put U300 when it came out. I haven't had any issues with the U100 going offline, at least not that I remember.

But yes, U100 is very well built, just like a deadbolt should be…

Umm.. one kick and you’re in. That’s the problem with all smart door locks. Traditional locks, though less convenient, are much safer as you can have multiple locks with the one key and a security screen

        • +3

one kick and you are in, that's common sense, but its likely your door frame to fail or even your door, rather the lock. Put that on metal door and metal frame and try kick it….

            @batsali:

Put that on metal door and metal frame and try kick it….

Who has a metal door in a residential home?

            • @freeb1e4me: Plenty of people that I know….

              • -4

@batsali: Pull the other one. Pointless to have a metal door as you would also need a metal frame. No doubt you know plenty of people with that too 😂

                • +2

@freeb1e4me: not sure what is your purpose at all and why shitposting, have nothing better to do? And yes, I do know people who have metal doors, they also have metal frames. One such example was my last place of residence, a unit with metal frame and metal entry door… do your research and find facts about different types of construction in the 80s, 90s, and 2000 and what fire rated doors are used in units

                  • -6

@batsali: Reading comprehension is not your strong suit then. Even if what you’re saying is “true” it’s definitely not common practice to have metal doors and frames in residential homes, hence my original comment.

                    • @freeb1e4me: my reading comprehension is way better than you think. My point on metal doors was regarding the failure point that you brought up, kick it and you are in, we are talking about the lock here and the point I made was that it's likely your convention door to fail rather than the lock itself, you have a nice day now…

As already mentioned it is a mute point as no one is going to install metal doors and frames in residential homes to house these smart door locks.

                        • +2

@freeb1e4me: Talk about reading comprehension 🤣.

Based on your comment, people need metal doors and frames to use smart door locks? No, people install smart lock for convenience.
You have missed the whole point here friend…. 🤣

                          • -2

@batsali: That’s laughable as you are the one who mentioned metal doors and frames like it’s a thing 😂😂😂

The point is you are now eating humble pie for such a stupid suggestion!

                        • @freeb1e4me: I would like to.

        • Locks are a deterrent but yes they are not indefeasible regardless if they are smart locks or a traditional lock. If we go down the 'they can just break it' scenario, well an intruder can break all sorts of things to get in.

That said, I don't think smart locks are as frail as you're describing.

          • @happyhappyhappy:

I don't think smart locks are as frail as you're describing.

Can you name an alternative that is less frail? 😉

  • Does the lock work with home assistant?

    • +1

      Yes it does

      • Thanks, I have ordered one.

  • +1

Great deal. Been waiting for U100 since prime day deal. This is even better

    Thanks to OP

  • Can you connect thr doorbell to the wifi directly and not use like google assistant etc?

Also anyway to put this on the gate which is 10m away from the house

    • Yep this is what I do

    • +1

Yes, the chime acts as a hub to connect to Wi-Fi.

  • +1

This is an insane deal. I have the U100 and purchased it on discount last year at around $250-$300 and have no regrets. Based on my research at that time, no other lock comes with the features it has at that price point. It is reliable and the battery life is very good. Can't remember if it's AA or AAA batteries but I still haven't replaced them a year later though mine is not connected to a hub which means it drains less energy.

    • I got my u100 but the black colour at full rrp! Lucky enough that one is not on discount.

  • +1

    Thanks got a lock!

    Still some stock around

    • Damn, none in Tassie.

      • Maybe try ask Aqara online store to price match?

  • I noticed the aqara page says it needs a wooden door with the U100 - however I have a metal door, will there be problems with doors made of metal?

    • I think you can install it as long as the thickness is okay, but drilling holes in a metal door will be difficult. The last time I installed one, I had to extend the hole on the door.

      • Thanks. I think this one may be in the too hard basket for me. I don't think my lock mechanism is compatible also, so will probably need a locksmith fort my situation.
I'll move on to other options for now.

Would be best to ask @batsali and @freeb1e4me as per comments above lol ;-)

I managed to get a price beat of the door lock for $179 at Bunnings through live chat!

    Thanks OP!

    • Bunnings has a live chat? Since when? Where?

    • Got told no they won't price beat as it's special order item "not stocked"
Also got told she'll check the price first to see if they will. What would their price matter? It's a price beat…

    • Thanks, Didn't know they had live chat,
Just beating now, need to return my officework order now.

      • How'd you get it to work? When I try chat and price beat it only gives me an SMS option

        • On live chat and choose price beat as option.

You can say no to "Would you like to chat with us through SMS?"

Just give them officework price and post code (need to be in stock).

I got order number but need to go in-store to pay as it is special order.

          • @lufee: When I say no to SMS option it ends the chat lol

          • @lufee: Finally got the quote, just needed to keep trying. The listing though only shows 200 HARDWARE, no where on the quote does it state U100. Is yours the same?

            • +1

@knobbs: Mine said same but had a second page on quote with aqara U100 description

    • I just tried bunnings price match and they would only make the order for the closest bunnings to where the office works with stock was located…

      • looks like some reps are a bit more lenient, maybe try another chat and hope it someone else
