Thanks OP. It did pretty well on the recent CHOICE tests at 78%. It actually won the best liquid for both Front and Top Loaders: https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/laundry-and-cleani…

The smell of this is just so strong. Even using a very small amount with vinegar for rinse. I went straight back to Omo ultimate sensitive and much prefer it. Haven't noticed a difference in cleaning power

I recommend reading this great writeup. It covers proper usage of surfactants, lipase enzymes, oxygen bleach and ammonia to eliminate persistent body oil stains and laundry odors.

OMO powder is mentioned in the "#1 - The Easiest Option - B, C & L All In One Product" section, containing the Oxygen Bleach, Cleaners (Surfactants) and Lipase (Enzymes) components. Necessary for a good clean.

This liquid does NOT have oxygen bleach in it. If you are getting this liquid, following the writeup, I would also recommend a separate Oxygen Bleach Powder (B), and Ammonia (A), added in the separate wash cycle (as specified in the guide). I implore anyone curious about optimising their laundry and chemistry to read it. It is tailored for the general public, very easy to read, don't worry about the technicals if you don't want to.

If you are getting this liquid, following the writeup

I have a self dosing machine, so liquid is the only choice for it as I'm too lazy to scoop.

You are living in the future my friend

    • Cool resource, thanks for sharing.

What do you use for ammonia? Would this work or is there something at Colesworth?

This one from woolies is fine https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/90685/supr…. Cloudy means it has soap in it which is fine as the guide states "Clear, sudsy or lemon doesn’t matter - it’s the ammonia that counts, not the additives".

Use about half the bottle for the "Rehab Wash" section. It's a lot but necessary to ensure the water pH is high enough for the intensive clean. This is because its concentration is 2% (20g/L on the bottom left of the packaging) but the guide says 250 mL of 5-10% ammonia solution, so we need to double it to at least 500mL (or a little more).

You won't be using ammonia regularly anyways, the whole "spa-day" process is for when your clothes/towels are persistently smelly, yellowed, or stiff with sebum buildup as it says at the top of the guide. I should have clarified that in my initial comment.

Ammonia will destroy materials like wool, silk, and other animal-derived fibers, so be aware of that. The guide details it all good luck!

Thanks for sharing the reddit link. It's an amazing guide. I've just resurfaced after going down that rabbit hole for a couple hours.

I've also found a list of all the OMO product ingredients which shows that only OMO product which contains lipase is the Ultimate Powder. OMO Sensitive powder has bleach (sodium carbonate peroxide) but no lipase (or any of the enzymes to remove stains).

I assume the reason why the liquid comes in second to the powder in the CHOICE review is that while the liquid includes a few enzymes, it does not have lipase. (Also no bleach but that's an easy fix with chose of Oxy. From info available online, none of the other brands at Coles/Woolies showed they contained lipase either (maybe with the exception of Cold Power which doesn't list their enzymes), and some have no enzymes at all.

Looks like you've convinced me to switch over to powder. Might also go buy a bottle of Cloudy Ammonia too.

      • Happy to help. Thanks for sharing your research!

You might also be interested in KismaiAesthetics's other write-ups, like this one about using citric acid as a fabric softener.

Some people may not be aware, but fabric softener liquids are really really bad for the washing machine and your clothes, their usage is heavily discouraged. It coats your clothes with a waxy, lubricating residue, which is what gives off the artificial "soft" feeling but also ruins it, reducing absorbency (for towels), making it trap more body oils, odors, etc. They also build up everywhere in the washing machine, wherever it touches. With the residue leading to the growth of mold, mildew, and biofilm which contributes to the 'sour' odor some machines may have.

Consider using citric acid as your fabric softener instead. It's good to use regularly along with your washing detergent/powder. As their write-up will explain, it helps ensure all detergent is fully rinsed away, leaving the fabric in a much better state. Detergent overuse is a big issue, most people don't even need half the minimum manufacturer recommended dosage. Citric acid helps with this but people should also be using much less detergent than they think as a guideline.

  • used a quater cup for a normal load works well for me..

  • Is this one better than the powder version ?
