I bought the jacket in the OP from BCF for $67 about 2 weeks ago when they had a 30% off discount code active

If you don't need it urgently, might be best to wait for a similar discount

    • What's your verdict on jacket?

      • I have a North Face Nuptse 2 which is also 600 loft and I find the Macpac to be not as thick. But for $67 it's a no brainer and you really can't go wrong

        • Nuptse 2 is 700 loft so it's warmer. It's also $400 compared to ~$60 halo from BCF and gift card.

          • @Feeblely: Yes you are correct it's 700 loft. But I don't think the North Face jacket is 4 - 5 times better than the Macpac jacket. The Macpac jacket is a great deal for the price

            • @sssboi: Nuptse has a hardier and water resistant coating - its DWR is non-PFC, as most should be these days. The two jackets are chalk and cheese but if you want a cheap "everyday" jacked for warmth in dry conditions the Halo will do the job, as you said.

      • I'd skip it unless you're planning to get a separate rain jacket for winter weather. When I was in the Macpac store, their staff informed me that the Halo down is not water resistant, so you need to put a rain jacket over it. They don't stock a rain jacket under $300.

Meanwhile, my Kmart jacket cost under $50 and has been reliable through wind and rain for years.

Because kmart jackets have plastic fill., you could take a swim in them and they'll dry alright.

But plastic fill isnt nearly as warm and you might as well wear any sort of jumper, hoodie, pullover, etc.

There are rain jackets below $300, unless you mean a down filled rain jacket, which are expensive.

          • @TsunamiInTheHouse: Actually I found it performed exceptionally well during Perth's coldest winter in over 50 years (which happened to be this year). I walk the dog twice a day so I have plenty of testing opportunities. I was also caught outside during Perth's wildest weekend storm while on a retreat, and it handled those conditions really well too.

If you have jackets below $300 that fit the bill, you may want to ask HQ to retrain your colleagues because I asked them specifically why I needed a new jacket (KMart getting a bit old, walking the dog twice a day during this weather) and that's the answer that they gave me.
