  • would any of these be suitable to set up as as a dedicated home assstant dashboard?

      ChatGPT reckons:

      • C Idea CM7000 Plus / CM8000 Plus (10” screen, 256GB, 5G, $89)
→ Best value here. Big screen, more storage, newer hardware. Great for a mounted dashboard.

      • Blackview Tab 60 LTE 128GB ($89)

→ Decent storage, LTE optional, reasonable screen size.

      • Blackview Tab 70 WiFi 64GB ($79)

→ Cheap, decent midrange, and WiFi-only is fine for a fixed dashboard.

Classic - AI slop that doesn't even answer the question.

        • I mean, it did. It said both are fine for a dashboard and why wouldn't they? All you need is a screen and a potato chip so long as you don't care about spicy batteries which would be an issue for any tablet.

    • the constant charging would stuff the battery up after a while wouldn't it?

      • It shouldn't. Anything with a Li-Ion battery should be smart enough to avoid that.
They will turn off trickle charge after a point. If it maintains 100% (by intermittent topping up) , it will shorten the battery life, but who cares in this case? Well, that has been my experience, but people online report swollen batteries in old tablets.

Some Android devices are smart enough to drop the charge level if left plugged in long enough. I have a ZTE phone that does this.

        Android Home Assistant Dashboards

    • The specs are good - 800 x 1280 pixels, 4GB, $79.

The trick is to find a tablet that stays on normal brightness.
You might be able to go into developer settings, and get it to stay on when charging, but find it still goes dim after not used for a few minutes. That was my experience with a couple of cheap Android tablets.

Maybe somebody could test if these have a "screen timeout" option of "never"?
edit: there is an app "caffeine" that may fix it.

    • Ive bitten the bullet on the Blackview Tab 80.
      Lets see how it goes.

I chose it over the CM7000/8000 mainly for being Android 13 vs 12 for the C Idea

    What's a kids tablet?

    • Cheap slow tablet that kids will use, but adults will be frustrated by.

      • But wouldn't kids be doing more with a tablet than adults?

        • they're way more tolerant of poor performance as long as they get their hit

that said I still wouldn't buy these… hardware is just way too old

Anything under 6GB RAM is e-waste.

  • the C8000 plus states a CPU: MTK6735 and octa core. everything i can see about the MTK6735 is quad core and from 2014.
