Lossless Scaling is a powerful tool that enhances your gaming experience by making games smoother with LSFG frame generation and optionally improving quality or performance with various scaling algorithms and machine learning models like LS1. It's compatible with most games, even those that don't have built-in frame generation or scaling, as well as with other applications and a wide range of hardware.

Serious question as someone who has been curious about this app for a while, with Nvidia's newest Smooth Motion setting in their own app, is this thing still useful or does it have other features too?

It's incredible for the handheld devices. Breathed new life into the Steam Deck for instance. Not just with native games but emulation as well.

I admit I didn't even think of that.. so you can run this app and something else at the same time on the deck just fine? Or does it need to be in desktop mode?

        • +2

Yeah there's a Decky Loader plugin for it. Settings can be adjusted in-game, including the frame rate multiplier.

      • I bought it for an ROG Ally that I since got rid of, was great on that too.

      • Had no idea you could use this on Steam Deck! Is it easy to install?

I'm not massively familiar with how Smooth Motion works, but the main advantages of LS over most framegens are:

      1) you can offload it to your APU or a second GPU, freeing up resources for the main render platform

      2) you can cap frames using an in game or in driver method, then tell LS "generate frames up to x cap", so I can cap Helldivers 2 at 80, and whether it's hitting 80 or not, LS will try and get 165hz of frames out of the source material whether that means 2x / 3x or something in between. Means I can run it at 3200x1800 downsampled to 1440p and most of the time be over 150fps also on a 9070xt.

      3) you can scale resolution and generate frames at any arbitrary quality level, per game.

      4) it works on anything it can grab a window surface from, whether that's youtube or an media player or a game or an emulator or whatever.

    Lossless Scaling and/or OptiScaler, ELI5?

    • +2

Both work by using frame gen by using fake frames so the game looks smoother and increases FPS

Optiscaler you have to patch each individual game (which can be quite fiddly) and it only works on games that already have some sort of Xess, DLSS or FSR in the game settings so it can take it over - because it is working directly in the game though it has better results and less performance overhead

Lossless - set settings once, press go - works on everything - more performance overhead, not as high quality due to not receiving in game motion vectors. Lossless can also do scaling - set game at like 50% resolution (so you can increase your textures/graphics) and then it'll double it so it looks a bit more crisper.

That's the short version of it.

Optiscaler is of course superior for upscaling quality, but the compatibility with games is limited. Lossless Scaling is pretty much universal and can be used anywhere.

Quite good but very situational. Best for older games, especially if they have arbitrary caps lik 1080p or 60fps. Upscaling and framegen are not free, and you may be sacrificing base performance for fake performance and ending up back where you started only at worse quality.

But in the right situation it's outstaning how well it works.

Lossless scaling is amazing for linux users too as afmf is not available on amd cards on linux. One less excuse to not leave windows.

  • Love this for single player games, made expedition 33 much more enjoyable.

  • Just bought this for the new Xbox Ally X. Hopefully helps make games run smoother.
