8700g is a 7700 with graphics for the price of the god-tier 7800X3D

Just beware it only dedicates 8 PCIE lanes to discrete GPUs and only 16MB of L3 cache (half the usual size)

Not a problem for non gamers and Office / HTPC users but for anyone wanting to make the PC do double duty for work + gaming, you should buy an ordinary (not-G) AMD Ryzen.

almost all AM5 socket cpus come with an iGPU nowadays. The ones that do not, are usually the cut-down budget versions using the "F" suffix

  • i5-14600k still seems better value at $355 overall

    • If you really want the 780m, its significantly better than the 14600k igpu. If you aren't, theres no reason to look at the 8700g.

It stands to reason that a processor that comes with the fastest integrated GPU available isn't going to be as fast as one of the fastest CPUs that doesn't. Or is going to have faster graphics than the fastest discrete GPUs available. There's only as much you can build in with a power budget of 65W. That's the point of the 8500G/8600G/8700G. You get a damn lot of both processor speed AND graphics speed. Just not as much of BOTH as you'd get if you paid a lot more for the fastest CPU and the fastest GPU and a huge PSU to power them. And a big case to fit it all in. And lots of fans to keep it all cool.

I'm happy with my 8600G. And even happier with my 8600GE, which does nearly as much and only uses 35W. They make quite powerful minimalist computers. One step up from the best miniPCs. OzBargain loves them. So which the loud disapproval for what is essentially a super-miniPC. The big brother to the best miniPC processor, running a lot faster with a real desktop cooler and fan not a noisy laptop one, with fast desktop RAM in a desktop ITX motherboard in a case only slightly larger than a miniPC.

The disappointment with the AMD phoenix series APUs is the poor motherboard support. Like their laptop versions they all contain two USB 4 controllers in the processor, but desktop motherboard manufacturers design their products to be compatible with all 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors, and in doing so fail to design them to utilise the USB 4 in the 8000s. With the single exception of the Asrock B850i Lightning, that at least utilises one of the USB controllers, then wastes it by making the only USB-C port also the DP port, so if you want to use DP you don't get USB 4 as well.

    • I was curious what the 8600GE was using 35W, why does it seem like a worse version of the 7840U?

  • Can this do a unified memory with the igpu with the right mobo? Or is that only available with the soldered ram/CPU boards?
